I'd like to say hi to everyone and say a little bit about myself.

I'm a registered Democrat, but I'm not one to follow the party line 'just because.' I tend to be more fiscally conservative, but generally speaking I lean more towards the liberal side, so I registered Democrat when voting in the primaries.

I enjoy travelling, a good book, photography, and have been blessed with a wonderful family. I have always enjoyed meeting people from all over the world, from all walks of life. This seems like a really active forum and I like the rules and guidelines, so thought I'd give it a try. :)

I think I do tend to lean libertarian on the political tests that are out there, but being an American who votes Dem or Rep, I tend to think along those lines. :D Not sure which way a libertarian would tend to vote.

Thank you! Sounds as if we are on the same page there. I also see that you are from Australia - how cool! - and it just happens to be my last continent to visit. I sure do look forward to it, though it will be a few years before my daughter and I can make it Down Under. Do you have a strong libertarian party in Australia?

    Thank you. :)

Fair enough - to each their own. Libertarians either vote for a Libertarian Party (Gary Johnson at the last election, for example) - or don't vote at all and prefer to work themselves to make the world a better place through counter economics and non-violent resistance. I like both methods.

Yeah it's a really nice place - definitely check out the Kimberley region if you end up coming - it looks great. Just what people think of when they think "Australia". The big cities on the East Coast like Sydney and Melbourne are fun - but if you really want to discover Australia I'd recommend going inland/West. Maybe hike some of the Bicentennial National Trail and spend a few nights camping.

Australia has a very small Libertarian party that recently got its first seat in the Australian Senate - the Liberal Democratic Party.

I imagine you were pleased with winning a seat in the Senate. :)

Thanks for the info; much appreciated. We definitely want to experience all that Australia has to offer.

Thanks for the welcome! The U.P. is the upper peninsula of Michigan (above the 'mitten' on the map), and people from the U.P. are called yoopers, hence my name.

Occasionally the U.P. is left off of U.S. maps, and becomes part of Canada - and that includes maps on the White House web site. :D
Missing the UP: Map on White House website does not include part of Michigan

Definitely a Packer fan. Lots of them in this neck of the woods! Some do tend to root for the Lions as long as the Packers aren't involved or affected at all. We'll take them over the Vikings. :D

I am a Red Wings fan, so I'm not totally opposed to Michigan teams.

I was at the time, but I've since decided to get out of dodge and move somewhere less bogged down in legislation.

No problem, it's a beautiful country with beautiful people - try to spend as little time in the cities as you can - they're not really much different from anywhere else in the world. Also check out the Daintree Rainforest in Queensland - went there once myself and was blown away.

At least it shows that the party can get elected; a 'first' is always good in that regard. :)

I've no doubt it is! We want to be able to go for a minimum of three weeks - hopefully a month - but time will tell. I Googled The Daintree Rainforest and can see why you were blown away! Must have been a great trip. We will definitely have to put it on the agenda. We actually do plan on spending most of our time outside of the cities, so it's good to have you confirm that idea. We would like to take the train, which looks pretty amazing. We'd also like to go to Tasmania.

Ooh which one? I've taken the Indian Pacific, it's just round the corner actually - was fantastic. I hear the Ghan and Sunlander are pretty speccy too.

Never been to Tasmania, but I hear it's got great scenery. Oh, and wine. Yes definitely check out the wine :p

Sorry I've been remiss in my thanks/appreciation re: your welcome! - I've been out of town for some pre-holiday visits/events. Perhaps the busy holiday season wasn't the best time to register, but this way I'll be already established here after things slow down a bit. I do look forward to being a contributing member of this forum! :)

We haven't decided which one yet - that's the beauty of having some time before actually taking the trip - lots of time to plan and anticipate! :)! We know we want to get into the outback, so perhaps the Ghan might be the way to go. The Sunlander does look spectacular, too - and the Indian Pacific looks awesome! - must have been a wonderful trip! Perhaps we'll take more than one train trip - that might be the way to go! Thanks for the info and 'food for thought.'

I've seen some beautiful photos. As for the wine - good to know! Will most definitely check it out! :)

Just got an email from my daughter saying she wants to add Port Douglas to our Australia 'clipboard of fun;' looks beautiful! Are you familiar with it?
