4-year-old girl shoots and kills 4-year-old cousin, police say

By Lawrence Crook lll and Chandrika Narayan, CNN, January 17, 2014
    Excerpts:

(CNN) – “A 4-year-old boy was shot and killed by his 4-year-old female cousin while they were playing with a gun, Detroit police said.

The shooting happened Thursday in a home on the city's west side.

There were three children - all cousins - at the home at the time of the incident, said Detroit Deputy Chief Rodney Johnson. The third child was 5, he said.

Detroit Police Public Information Officer Adam Madera said the children found a "long gun" under a bed, pulled it out and began to play with it.

"At this time, although it's early in the investigation, this appears to be a tragic accident," Madera said.

This is the latest incident involving children who accidentally shoot someone or die of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In October, a babysitter in Vidor, Texas, was charged after her 5-year-old charge fatally shot himself with her gun, police said.

Two weeks earlier, a 2-year-old girl fatally shot herself in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and the toddler's father faced involuntary manslaughter charges, police said.

In New Orleans, a 5-year-old girl died June 23 after she came into contact with a .38-caliber revolver and accidentally shot herself in the head while her mother was at a store, police said.

Last August, a 3-year-old boy in Dundee, Michigan, found a .40-caliber handgun belonging to a family friend on a closet floor in his home. He died after accidentally shooting himself in the head, police said.

A study of Colorado trauma center data found a surprising number of children were being injured, many of them seriously, by guns.

According to the Centers for Disease Control's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, 703 children under the age of 15 died in accidental firearms deaths between 2001 and 2010, the latest year for which data are available.

During the same period, 7,766 children under the age of 14 suffered accidental firearm injuries.”

    .....

IMO: Not only are the crazees running around with guns ready to kill at a moment’s notice, any public transgression, then pleading innocent because he feels he is part of a secret, as yet unexplained “militia” sent by some entity in the sky to protect people in cases of emergency.

But just a few years ago he was saying he needed guns and assault weapons for ‘hunting.’ So there is plenty of killing going on throughout the land with no end in sight.

We add to that the over 8,000 children from 2001 -2010 that are killed or injured. Think what it must be today in 2014!

When do we get some sanity in gun laws to protect our children from accidental shootings, or is that not as important to gun lovers as owning guns and carrying them around waiting for something to happen?

It's already illegal to grant a child unsupervised access to a firearm. It's just not something that can enforced unless the cops go door to door making sure everybody has a gun safe in the very back top shelf of their closet. If people are too stupid and/or irresponsible to properly secure their firearms from children then what exactly can the government do?

What law would have that can prevent this?

    http://www.bluescience.com/swimming-pools/posts/are-swimming-pools-more-dangerous-than-guns/
There is one drowning for every 11,000 pools, each year. In a country of 6 million pools, 550 children under the age of 10 drown each year.
One child is killed by gun for every 1 million-plus guns. In a country with an estimated 200 million guns, an estimated 175 children under 10 die each year.
Death by pool is a far more likely, not to mention extremely preventable.

unintentional firearm deaths compared to drowning in pools, 138 - 1056

counting suicides in firearm deaths is comical and very typical and including homicides like murder doesn't distinguish between 15 y.o. drug dealers getting shot and killed in a drug deal gone bad, and a 7 y.o. getting shot in a drive-by shooting....

so I stand by my statement.... pools kill more kids than guns.... when you eliminate all the agenda in your stats

Its not my country that's dying off. The sad thing is you don't even know it.

But your lack of compassion for that soldier who defended your own country tells me all I need to know.

Neither is mine. There are full of people in Britain.

    Alright.

How do you know how I feel about the soldier's death? You're the one who brought the victim into this discussion to justify your political views. Don't act as though you care about this victim. You'll only embarrass yourself.

Accept the fact that guns do more harm than good. :bored:

Now run along and play with you're guns like a good little boy. : P

Your culture and people are being replaced. That's a country dying.

Your reaction to the example said it.

England is the country of my surname. England is an ally of my country, fought together with us in many wars. I respect all allied soldiers as well as our own. You however proved you could care less about his life by your reaction to his example.

The terrorists absolutely agree with people like you. The other word for it is sheep.

^ What is with all this emotional drive? You sound like a wounded hippo.

My main point is that guns do more harm than good. In terms of self-defence there are other methods to protect yourself without killing people in the process.

It has been proven factual approx. 1978363985498 times on this very forum alone that guns are NOT the most dangerous thing to children or anybody else.

Fact check. Pools kill more children every year than guns. Fact, no dispute.

There is absolutely no reason why anybody needs to have a pool in their backyard. If they want to go to the pool they can go to the public pool.

So if you seriously honestly truly cared about the safety of children then why are you not speaking out against something that is MORE dangerous to them?

Wouldn't it make sense to go after something that does the most harm, if child safety honestly was your main concern?

Enforcing the one's on the books already could. Put them in jail. If irresponsible gun owners spent 7 to 10 years of their lives in a state penitentiary if they left a gun where a child could access it to hurt or kill, responsibility would set in quickly.

    * Guns used 2.5 million times a year in self-defense. Law-abiding citizens use guns to defend themselves against criminals as many as 2.5 million times every year -- or about 6,850 times a day. [1] This means that each year, firearms are used more than 80 times more often to protect the lives of honest citizens than to take lives. [2]

    * Of the 2.5 million times citizens use their guns to defend themselves every year, the overwhelming majority merely brandish their gun or fire a warning shot to scare off their attackers. Less than 8% of the time, a citizen will kill or wound his/her attacker.[3]

    * As many as 200,000 women use a gun every year to defend themselves against sexual abuse.[4]

    * Even anti-gun Clinton researchers concede that guns are used 1.5 million times annually for self-defense. According to the Clinton Justice Department, there are as many as 1.5 million cases of self-defense every year. The National Institute of Justice published this figure in 1997 as part of "Guns in America" -- a study which was authored by noted anti-gun criminologists Philip Cook and Jens Ludwig.[5]

    * Armed citizens kill more crooks than do the police. Citizens shoot and kill at least twice as many criminals as police do every year (1,527 to 606).[6] And readers of Newsweek learned that "only 2 percent of civilian shootings involved an innocent person mistakenly identified as a criminal. The 'error rate' for the police, however, was 11 percent, more than five times as high."[7]

    * Handguns are the weapon of choice for self-defense. Citizens use handguns to protect themselves over 1.9 million times a year. [8] Many of these self-defense handguns could be labeled as "Saturday Night Specials."

more lives have been saved by guns each year then has been taken by a gun
Only about 30,000 a year die from guns compared to 2.5 million that where saved

Yeah well you don't exactly get a free pass if your child uses your gun to kill his buddy...Parents do get in trouble for it.

The problem is that they only get in trouble with it after the fact because nobody can every really know if you leave your gun laying around there house while your 2 year old runs around. The only way to know would be to have random house checks by the cops. Not something that I think anybody wants.

This dated statistisc is from Gary Kleck's old research. It's biased and ignored by most experts. He's a gun nut whose DFU research was done in 1993 over the phone. His numbers are highly exaggerated, especially since merely reaching for one's gun is considered a DFU. (Hemenway, Lambert, Denton & Fabricius, Violence Policy Centre, Branus).
