The candidate challenging Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) referred to illegal immigrants, from south of the border, as “wetbacks.” Texas Republican Chris Mapp stated the term is as "normal as breathing air in South Texas."

Senator Cornyn tried to turn Mapp’s remark to his advantage when he commented, "I recognize this is a free country but that's not the sort of way to gain people's confidence that you care about them and you want to represent their concerns in the halls of Congress." Granted Cornyn's words were self-serving, but given the increasingly overt racism that has come from the right wing since Obama first announced plans to run for President, Mapp’s characterization of undocumented Latinos as “wetbacks” can only improve his chances of winning the GOP nomination in March.

Though right-wingers will deny it, Mapp’s remark proves racism remains strong in Texas, and is equally powerful among most Tea-publicans nationwide.

With eight candidates competing for this particular Texas nomination, Mapp has already set himself apart from the rest of the pack, and will certainly improve his standing with Texas conservatives and neoconservatives if he continues using his white supremacist rhetoric.

Virginia State Senator, Republican Steve Martin, believes a pregnant woman is nothing more than a “host.” If Mapp voices his agreement with this tidbit of sexism, it could be the clincher for him.

Logically--Wetbacks isn't a racist term if someone is referring to illegal immigrants from Mexico. It would be racist if it were used against the entire race. I get tired of people misusing the term "racism". Reactionary and stupid. You can call it tacky and derogatory--but you can't call it racist and be correct because its referring to a group of people who are behaving a certain way..

But you guys keep telling us the Tea Party is dead. Surely a tea party candidate couldn't possibly challenge Cornyn right?

Yeah, because Americans love extremist aggression.

The extremists are becoming increasingly irrelevant, and the "establishment" is finally dealing with these anti-Patriots like the Tea Partiers.

Since there seems to be so much interest in the Texas midterms, which of the 10 Democrats in the primary do you think has a chance to oust Cornyn?

Yeah, none is what I think, too.

LoL What are you going to do when the Tea Party takes more seats than they already have and the republicans take control of the house and senate, effectively making Obama a lame duck?

Why do Dems always call "racist" when they don't have valid points to present?

    .

Calling someone who illegally crossed the Rio Grande has NOTHING to do with racism! It is simply a reference to the ILLEGAL act!!!

The old white boys can call them all the racist names they want - doesn't change the fact that this is going to happen.

I'll wait for one of those congress members to actually admit that they're a member of the Tea Party.

Why are politicians so afraid to admit that they're a member of this radical, extremist group? Why are so many Republicans defecting while citing extremism? A few of these GOP defectors have become independents, but I think that many of them will become Democrats in the future.

You have the freedom of speech to say whatever you want.

You just have to accept the consequences for it. Racism is bad for business.

It's assumed in the word 'Democrat'. Works exactly the same as the word 'liberal'.

Apparently - according the article - the consequences are a better chance at election.

    So we're good here.

Perhaps that's why the repubs are held in such well-deserved contempt.

Makes me wonder what the New Spain inhabitants - of what is now styled Texas - called the illegal immigrants from the States. ¿Espaldas secas (drybacks)?

& yah, it's racist - or @ least intended to be racist. 'Course NM & TX between them have reduced the Río Grande to a mere trickle - hey, maybe we should rename the thing Economics - but I'm sure the term is in use all the way out to CA. In all truth, we should probably change the term to the Aspersed, but hardly anyone would get it.

& I do appreciate the irony of some g.d. Okie ranting about Nah, it ain't racist. (I think we've got a winner here in the category of Axe handle award to the most oblivious would-have-been Dustbowl immigrant to CA.) Go read The grapes of wrath, or if that's too much effort, see the movie - the original, God alone knows if there's been a remake. I certainly wouldn't put it past Hollywood to try to foist some POS off on us. Witness the parlous state of our so-called conversation here.

Abysmal. Prexy Obama was a lame duck the moment he was sworn in as president for the 2nd time - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lame_duck_(politics)

He's term-limited - which has nothing to do with whoever's in Congress.
