Bye Bye, Brewer AP/The Huffington Post | Posted: 03/12/2014 5:59 pm EDT Excerpts: "Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) announced Wednesday she will retire at the end of this term. "There does come a time to pass the torch of leadership, so after completing this term in office I will be doing just that," Brewer said. "While I will no longer be governor after this year, I will remain a proud cheerleader and champion for this state that I love so dearly." Brewer made the announcement at an event at Park Meadows Elementary in Glendale, Arizona. More from the AP: "Brewer completed the term of former Gov. Janet Napolitano when she took a job in President Barack Obama's administration in 2009. Brewer then won a full term in 2010. She has said in the past that there's "ambiguity" in the constitution because she hasn't served two full terms. But she put that to rest Wednesday in suburban Phoenix as she declared "there does come a time to pass the torch of leadership." "She signed the immigration crackdown law known as Senate Bill 1070 in 2010 and sparred with the Obama administration over health care. Brewer also engaged Obama in a testy exchange while greeting him alongside Air Force One in Arizona in 2012, famously wagging her index finger in the president's face amid a dispute over border security. Brewer is known for her conservative views but has also riled her more hard-line base. She surprised many by embracing a key part of Obama's health care overhaul law - an expansion of Medicaid. After a battle with Republicans who control the Legislature, she cobbled together a coalition of Democrats and a handful of Republicans and got the measure adopted. About 300,000 more Arizonans are now eligible to sign up for the free health insurance plan." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/12/jan-brewer-retirement_n_4950389.html ...... IMO: Brewer was a flamboyant governor who ran on her ideas, as screwed up as they were, but you had to admire her for her refusal to be led by the nose by anyone whether it was the head of the RNC or President Obama. Whatever her convictions were she served her state well, as her state bordered Mexic0 and was a favorite place for walk over Mexicans seeking illegal entry into America. There must have been many residents that were frightened at all the strange people in town each morning. Whatever her future endeavors are, we wish this brash, disrespecting Arizonian who always had her job as governor first and foremost in the public interest. Too bad she couldn't see the whole picture...or maybe she does and is retiring from active political life.
Good. She's a RINO. Maybe she's not seeking reelection because she is looking at the internal polls showing her approval rating plunging after vetoing that religious freedom bill.
Yeah, hopefully the next governor can get the NFL and the SuperBowl, Apple, and for many to write the state off as a place to do business and live.
Amazing how everybody is all well & good until they don't agree with you hardliners on something... Then, they're just a RINO... Hilarious...
Nope, the problem for you is she is not far right enough for you. The good thing is she finally showed she can think of the good of the State she represents over the regressive fools in the State House pandering to far right-wing nut jobs within the State. - - - Updated - - - Is there a GOP rule that they have to include at least one looney female Repub in every Presidential Election?
Well, it's a good thing that Christian business owners in Arizona can still refuse to do business with gays if they want. Hopefully, their next governor will recognize that freedom and leave the business owners alone too.
Nope she is a republican all the way though. Extremist nut job at her finest. She was simply reined in by her corporate masters when the lunacy started to appear to effect the pocket book.
This is kind of worrying in some ways. When even Jan Brewer strikes down the absurd "religious freedom" law and faces opposition from the GOP in trying to help the significant elderly population in Arizona, it makes you wonder if they'll replace her with someone who only makes crazy decisions. In short, if Brewer wasn't far enough to the right for AZ, I'd hate to see just how far to the right they must actually be....
She's more Conservative that McCain, but I would prefer J.D. Hayworth over Brewer. We'll see... just as long as we don't have another Democrat scumbag that puts spending for votes now over our children's future.
There ARE limits...even in the current Republican Party....but just barely- http://www.politicalforum.com/showthread.php?t=346977 - - - Updated - - - Didn't Hayworth fail in his primary challenge to McCain in 2010?
Aww come on, you know she needs to run. Just kidding, I actually wish her well and a quick recover from her beinging thrown under the bus by her fellow Cons because she is not far enough right for their tastes. - - - Updated - - - Or a skumbag Republican that is willing to harm the state economy to pander to a few right-wing nutjobs.
Scary ain't it, it should be interesting to see what they replace her with a moderate that uses a little common sense to run their state, or a ultra-rightie that will sell the state down the tubes to pander to the right-wing extremists that would turn the state into a third world country (state).
I've long wondered about the possibility Gov. Brewer might have Alzheimer's Syndrome - based on some of her early statements and actions as a governor, reports her administration was being run by unelected "consultants" , who might be using her influence to funnel state monies their way, etc. I very sincerely hope not; and I wish her a happy retirement !
She did great fighting for Americans against illegal immigration. It's too bad it took a woman to finally have the balls to stand up to people abusing the American taxpayers cause we all know Obama doesn't have any.
Bingo! My sentiments exactly........ I'll never forget Brewer shaking her finger in Obama's face.... Lol..... I like Jan Brewer and wish her the best......
I just find it ridiculous that all these folks are heroes to their political bases until they display anything resembling their own opinion...
They already lost the SB once in the past over idiotic legislation (Pasadena CA thanks AZ for the hundreds of millions in economy boost from the visitors!), and were going to lose the next one next year if they had passed this law. Apple made the same promise for their factory coming soon. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/02/24/arizona-super-bowl_n_4848871.html
