While the situation in the Middle East is falling towards a [may be] unavoidable regional war on wide scale [involving Syria, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Palestine ... in several less or more low intensity conflicts] ... I would underline how technology affects more and more the way a war is conducted and overall its effects, not only on military structures and organization.

In the last days from Palestinian territories they have launched more rockets and missiles than in an entire year of past "confrontations", but up to an astonishing 90% of these missiles have been intercepted by the last high tech Israeli defense system.

The "Iron Dome" is the result of the Israeli technological superiority with a good financial hand from the United States [in the context of the United States-Israel Missile Defense Cooperation and Support Act; H.R. 5327].

I have to express my admiration for similar active defense system. In the field of active defense Israel has gained the world technological leadership.

In a few words: really impressive.

Texans with .30-30s and authorization would work just as well.

H.R. 5327 is not a one-way street. US armed forces and defense contractors are getting first-hand experience in what works.

The idea is to blend the strengths of Iron dome with US Patriot and Standard missiles plus rail guns and lasers to present an impenetrable air defense system.

Compare this to the Russian-made system that was so inept that the Israelis could bomb Syrian assets and nobody in damascus knew it had been obliterated until somebody from the outside drove to the site.

As for I know Israel has offered Iron Dome system to US and NATO allies to protect troops and bases in difficult operation theaters [like Afghanistan]. This technology promises also to be a great business for Tel Aviv [for example we in Italy could be interested in acquiring it].

A Qassam rocket costs what? Less than $100 to make? How much does each shot for Iron Dome cost?

The Palestinians can simply bankrupt the Israelis by shooting at them without having to kill anyone.

I agree with you; the expenditure to prevent an Israeli casualty is infinitely higher then to protect Gazan or a West Banker.

Wait, the economical comparison shouldn't be made between the whole Iron Dome system and a single Palestine rocket [or artillery shell, since Iron Dome is able to intercept also 150mm - 180mm artillery shells], but between an interceptor and that rocket [or not an interceptor, but a shell or the impulse of a laser ...].

So the real economical balance is not that negative for Israel ...

    Palestinians won't bankrupt Israelis.

Again, how much does each shot from Iron Dome cost? If it is more than the cost of a Qassam rocket, then then Israelis are on the losing side.

Well considering the arms are manufactured in Israel, each shot creates a new for an item actually creating economic activity.

On the other hand, each rocket is simply purchased by Hamas and no positive economic movement happens.

Don't people usually accuse the US of war profiteering? Now when it fits your argument, it's the other way around?

    Man, people really hate Jews...

Israel has got a GDP per capita around 37,000$
Palestine has got an estimated [difficult to be accurate about a so divided state] GDP per capita around 1,700$

This means that [law of great numbers rules] Israel can sustain an economical war effort 21.76 times more heavy than what could Palestinians sustain [if the territories out of Gaza could aid Hamas and friends].

So, no, I don't see all this economical difficult on the side of Israel.

Except that democracies are not willing to suffer economic difficulty as long as non-democracies. Their people won't accept it.

It's not like Israel isn't retaliating against the rocket attacks. Palestine is paying dearly for those launched rockets.

And every innocent Palestinian killed means more money from extremist groups and more recruits willing to fight Israel.

Hamas keeps using them as shields. If the new recruits are to stupid to see that then I guess they too will become Hamas fodder.

Little democracies know higher levels of motivations [Switzerland is a good historical example of this], so don't be too concerned about Israel ...

As an Israeli,I absolutely disagree with you.
You have no idea how many lives have been saved thanks to this incredible system and how much damage has been prevented. The Iron dome is a life saving machine and that's it main goal but when the rockets are assumed to fall in open space then the intercepting missiles are not launched. The cost of a "Tamir" missile is likely to be around 50000$ and it's nothing if you compare it to an attack that takes lives away (mourning and compensation for the relatives) and causes severe damage.

Wherever you look at it from,The iron dome is one of the most successful interception systems in the entire world with great proven capabilities.

Thanks for showing us how Hamas' rockets barely pose a threat to Israel.

So you pay $50k to shoot down $100 rockets? You are going to run out of money before they run out of rockets.

You understand that warfare is a form of economic action, yes?
