Bill, Melinda Gates Donate $1 Million To Gun Control Campaign

    AP | Posted: 08/25/2014 6:59 pm EDT
    Excerpts:

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP)- "Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, have donated $1 million to a Washington state campaign seeking to expand background checks on gun sales, bringing the total amount the campaign has brought in up to nearly $6 million.

The donation to the Initiative 594 campaign was given Friday, but it was not made public until Monday, when it posted on the state's Public Disclosure Commission website.

I-594 would require background checks for all gun sales and transfers in Washington state, including at gun shows and for private sales. Under the measure, exemptions would exist, including gifts within a family and antiques.

In a joint written statement issued Monday, the couple said that they believe I-594 "will be an effective and balanced approach to improving gun safety in our state by closing existing loopholes for background checks."

The large donation comes on the heels of fellow Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's $500,000 donation earlier this month. Also last week, venture capitalist Nick Hanauer donated an additional $1 million, bring his total donation to the campaign to nearly $1.4 million.

Other prominent figures who have made large donations to the campaign include former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and his wife, Connie, who have given $580,000.

A rival campaign, Initiative 591, would prevent the state from adopting background-check laws that go beyond the national standard, which requires the checks for sales by licensed dealers but not for purchases from private sellers. That campaign has raised just over $1 million so far."

    .....

IMO: Kudos for the people that have made large donations including Bill Gates and wife Melinda who are trying along with others to get a state law on gun control going in Washington, because Congress has remained strangely silent on any gun control bills that would make American citizens feel safer through the stricter laws making it harder for citizens to acquire guns if they are somehow unfit to own them.

It is a sad indictment of Congress that they refused to do anything to provide security, and well-being of fellow Americans in this vast land of a Wild Wild West of America which sees innocent women and children killed daily in our schools, malls, theatres, and on their front porches.

It will take philanthropic wealthy 1%ers to do away with loopholes in present gun laws to make America safer for our children and ourselves by electing Congressmen and women that will do the job of making America beautiful again.

Well, if it goes like what happened here in Colorado with Bloomberg money it will get some democrats representatives recalled and unemployed. Last year Colorado flushed 2 and one quit.

Many Democrats like those guns but progressives have a hard time understanding this.

We can only hope. Hoplophobes bloviating about gun issues especially when they know next to nothing about them. The OP is a prime example of this.

The two largest police organizations in the state have come out against 594 and in support of 591.

I'll just betcha that Bill and Melinda Gates have PLENTY of hired guns protecting them, their property and their kids. That's the typical thought process for liberal elites.....one standard for them, and yet another for everybody else.

This is again perfectly aligned with the movie 'Divergent', when the erudite faction controls the world, and only allows humans to live who believe in their ideology and rule, all the while taking the guns and freedoms away from the common man. The liberal religion will soon destroy our nation

They could have donated six billion and still have 90% of their wealth.

...and I'm sure they'd want all the people hired to protect them to be properly vetted and checked up on.

What is the problem, here? It's not like it's a campaign to make guns illegal.

The infamous, "Gun Show Loophole" which of course, isn't written into any law, in any state. No one can show you a gun show loophole because it is like a Bigfoot. Heard about but never seen. The same rules that apply to every other gun sale in the state apply at gun shows. Pa don't load up the truck and buy all dem long arms just 'fore huntin' season. If you are a licensed gun dealer, all the same laws exist at the gun show that exist in your store. You have to follow all the same procedures. If you are an individual, the same rules apply whether you sell your gun to your neighbor, to a stranger through a classified ad, use Craigslist to sell it, or yes, sell it at a gun show.

The term "Gun Show Loophole" was created to strike fear into the hearts of those that have never been to a gun show. And it's worked very well. The point that everyone misses is that criminals don't follow our laws, any way. Gangs don't droll when they see a poster for a gun show coming up. They aren't gathering the parking lots, ready to load up the shopping carts. But that is what the gun control advocates want you to believe.

The only thing these laws do is make it tougher for law abiding citizens to buy weapons. Wolves love unarmed sheep.
