    In related News....
A mysterious explosion that rocked Nicaragua's crowded capital Managua, creating a large crater, appears to have been caused by a small meteorite, officials said Sunday.

Amazingly, in a sprawling city of 1.2 million people, the impact near the international airport did not cause any known injuries, but it did leave a crater measuring 12 meters (39 feet) across and was felt throughout the capital late on Saturday.
*Nicaraguan authorities believe it was a piece of the small asteroid dubbed "2014 RC," which passed very close to Earth on Sunday and was estimated by astronomers to be about 20 meters big, or the size of a house.`

Neither were the dinosaurs. I am not sure this is a particularly good philosophy. Most of them had brains smaller than a fig.

What? When have you ever seen a "pebble" that was 65 feet across and weighed 13,000 tons? The Chelyabinsk meteor was no pebble.

I'm guessing here that the solution to this imaginary crisis is the same as the solution to all the imaginary crisises. We have to raise taxes...a lot. The sky is falling and the ocean is rising. Quick, we have to take your money.

Despite the rantings of the anti-government conspiracy theorists, how could they keep it a secret? There are plenty of scientists, astronomers and government agencies outside of the USA. It would be difficult to contain such information.

yeah, I understand, it will come out. But I do believe many world govts will break down to complete anarchy as news is let out.

Economies will collapse, marshall law and chaos will take over.

Why are conservatives worried about vague threats of government take over but not worried about actual scientific threats. It's mind boggling.

Can not speak for republicans , but pretty much every country that has ever existed has had a government take over of some sort. Its probably happened hundreds of times. Other " scientific " threats..... mainly only theorized. Its mind boggling how many leftist trust and support their government like lapdogs ( not saying you ).

It would seem more people would see the importance of funding means of diverting asteroids away from the earth....

You do realize that it doesn't have to hit you directly in order to royally screw over the planet right?

Just amazed at the mentality displayed on this subject.

It hasn't happened in my life time, so it won't happen....

    Unreal.

    Crisis? Eh, maybe, maybe not.

One thing we do know though, rocks are whizzing all around in space...we have a chance of getting hit by a big one (it's happened more than once).

We don't have the technology now to do anything about it, therefore we should nothing?

I'm sure there were plenty of people with the same mentality in the 1940's that thought sending a man into space was preposterous.

Better yet, we need to find a way off our own rock because in mere 2 billion years or so, our own sun will swallow our planet.

Right. And it's possible that you will spontaneously combust while eating your oat meal in the morning.

Well, here it is Monday September 8, 2014. So we are home free. Glad I didn't know about this until today. I'd have been worrying. Remember when some folks believed the world was going to end on December 21, 2012? I'm ashamed to admit it, but I was anxious about that event. Doesn't take much to scare me I guess.

The threat of an asteroid hitting Earth is not theorized. It's happened before plenty of times. It's not a matter of if but when it happens. And setting up a defense against it would not cost nearly as much as the damage if it did happen.

    Well, let's see...

We need technology that can detect them sooner, then figure out which ones are on trajectory for earth.

We've already flown to/beside comets and even whacked an asteroid with an impactor...so that proves we can send craft to them.

We don't need to send up atomic weapons to blast them to bits...just need to push them a little with a rocket motor to nudge them off course.

A little math and they could use gravitational fields from the sun or planets to help with the course change.

I think early detection is probably the most daunting task right now.
