Turkey was a natural ally when the USSR was the opponent of the US. Now however the new opponent is radical islam and Turkey has had an islamist government for quite a while (about 10 years). I'm afraid that they will become an "ally" like the Saudis. Ready to stab us in the back if we at some moment show weakness.

How is this any different than when they refused airspace.

Yes Margot, and the US has it's own self-interest to look after as well, ISiL isn't on our borders. On the the other hand they are at the borders of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Jordan, and Israel. Pursuing our self interest would entail not lifting a damn finger to do what the Arabs, Turks, and Israelis won't do. That's self-interest, Margot.

I don't care whether the US gets involved or not.. although do I think American boots on the ground would galvanize ISIL... and I have said that repeatedly..

We've already stirred them up, by bombing them in Iraq.

The fact remains that ISIS is their problem, not ours.

It's about the said coalition that is supposed to shore up the strategy that has been announced. Just who are the members of the coalition of the willing? Turkey, France, UK, Italy, Germany, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Jordan? Who?

That war monger Obama is dropping bombs on civilians to get at the Taliban and ISIS terrorists. Even laser guided bombs have "to who it may concern" printed on their sides. Just how many Pakistani, Yemeni and now Iraqi's civilians have been killed by Obama's indiscriminate bombing, hundreds, thousands?

The OE had been in decline for a looong time yes... but guess what happened shortly after WW1? Oil boom in the ME. Why did the Brits put the House of Saud in charge of what is now Saudi Arabia? Because it was/is filled with oil, and the Ottomans controlled it.

If the OE had been able to reassert itself, which it likely could have if it had not been for western intervention, then it would have been able to regrow its influence and power using the oil trade. And the only reason they declared for the Kaiser was because Britain turned them down first if you recall (much to their later chagrin). They had been allies several times in the past.

Remember we station Nuclear Missiles in Turkey and those were removed as part of the deal as the CCCP removed it's Nukes from Cuba.

Turkey wants to be considered part of Europe and geographically points can be made for saying it is or is not as Turkey connects to Syria. Iraq, Iran...etc.....and is seperated from South Eastern Europe by the Turkish Straits connecting the Med. Sea to the Black Sea.

The Turks I know think of Kurds in a racist way like some American's think of Puerto Rican's living in the lower 48 states....which is racist as all Puerto Rican's are U.S. Citizens.

Still....Turkey is necessary to provide Logistic Routes to the Middle East for the U.S. and NATO.

With Turkey you're traveling through a burning bridge. They have a lot of issues.

Wait when was this? They're stubborn, and I've been under the impression that they've been drifting away from us with signs going back at least a decade.

    Naw.

They do that all for the purpose of getting more money in U.S. Monetary AID!! LOL!!

    The Turks are American lovers.

We have a few Turkish families who moved into town and BOY are they hard workers!!!

Just like that Iranian Family that went through Hell and High Water to get out of Iran....VERY hard workers.

The NOW Turkish American's and Iranian American Families have older kids that are members of the U.S. Military and when 9/11 happened the LARGEST AMERICAN FLAG IN TOWN was attached to the entire side of their family owed and run business.

The Turkish American and Iranian American Families are friends of mine as I have been to BOTH of their native countries and they have very few if any locals who understand and know their birth nations teritory, culture and Politics.....so they like when I come in to buy Breakfast from the once Iranian's and Fruit and Vegetables in the winter as I have a massive organic garden from the once Turks.

The Turkish American Family told me that many, many Turks dream of moving to the United States but that even though the U.S. and Turkey are allies immigration to the U.S. is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT and the paperwork daunting and the waiting line is long.

The Iranian American Family who really went through HELL to get to the U.S. already had distant family members living in the U.S. who helped them have a job waiting for them and helped them buy and set up their Eatery but it is easier getting in the U.S. for Iranian's as they were victims of Political Oppression.

They as well told me many....many Iranian Families DREAM of moving to the United States.

When I started talking to the Iranain Family about the Religious Old Guard Controlled Iranian Secret Police...Republican Guard and Qud's Force.

The Qud's Force is a Military Division devoted to spreading the tenets of the Iranain Islamic Revolution WORLDWIDE!

When I mentioned Qud's Force the Mother and Father of this family both first SMILED that an American in their restaurant even KNEW what Qud's Force was never mind understood what it did.....then they both frowned...became sad and they BOTH had eyes well up with tears for members of their Family and some Friends who did not make it our of Iran and some who were KIDNAPPED in Turkey by Qud's Force Members who had the job of rounding up dissidents.

I don't know about what individuals from Turkey think, but I was focusing on Turkey itself.

There's the growing Islamification of their government, which may lead to a sharia law state one day. Then, there's also the risk of a military coup.

Muslim radicalism has pretty much died out in Turkey over the past 40 years.

Have you paid any attention to the current Turkish Prime Minister and his efforts to become one in the position for life? He is lifting many restrictions that were imposed by Atatürk and maintained for many decades since then. While he is imposing strict censorship on news, radicals are increasing and gaining more power.

Yes....but those radicals are of a different nature that Sunni Islamic Jihadists.

It is VERY important for Turkey to become more open and democratic as well as it is important for EUROPE to stop attempting to cut Turkey out of European concerns.

Europe is soley responsible for this issue with Turkish inner strife as on one hand you have Radicals saying...."The European's will NEVER treat us as a full fledged member of NATO nor do they want us in the E.U.!"

Then you have the Non-Radicals curtailing Democracy and Human Rights.
