You hear this phrase a lot among the Christian crowd, so I got curious and looked it up.

So I got THIS salient meaning:

    shut up : confined, repressed <a pent crowd> <pent-up feelings>

    From Merriam Webster online.

And I got THIS salient meaning from Dictionary dot com:

confined; restrained; not vented or expressed; curbed:

So really, now I've got to wonder what is truly meant by repent.

I'm getting a sneaking suspicion that it really means to shut the frock up and listen to the Christian who is proselytizing to you.

    Could that be right?

Why would I have to shut up? If this is a discussion about being saved, why can't I have my own input? And why can't I make my own decisions?

Isn't it also a really asinine thing to tell someone to shut up?

I can only conclude that talking with Christians is a one way street when they say REPENT.

Dude, this is a phrase that many groups use. It's not limited to one group.

I am speaking generally here, not specific.

But Jesus created only 1 true church, thus only 1 true religion. how can so many religions claim to be Christian when....like Highlander..there can be only 1.

I suspect you know the answer.

Early Catholic Church leaders was against the printing press for the very reason you stated, shut up and do as we command, after all only we can properly read and understand the scriptures.

religion is about controlling of the masses by the few.

Because i didn't use the word repent, I used the word pent, without the re in front of it.

And I never found that one either.

Well, no wonder you find a weird definition if you're googling the wrong word. I find many references to repenting meaning roughly regret.

So you'd be fine with people calling atheists communists because there are atheistic groups that are communists? Generally and not specifically, of course.

The Greek word metanoia meant change of mind or heart, repentance, regret and in rhetoric meant afterthought and correction.

Which Christian denominations do not advocate for repentance from sin? I'm familiar with almost all of the mainstream Christian denominations here in the US, and I'm not aware of any that oppose the concept of repentance. It is a Biblical doctrine, is it not?

You're right. He was using it in the context of an ordinary Christian teaching Biblical principles in their native vernacular, rather than quoting scripture directly from the Bible. What is the salient difference, and how would that vary based upon the particular denomination of Christian offering the Biblical advice?

That one if from Websters online.

And if you look up the wrong word you're bound to get the wrong definition.

I know that plenty of religious people do indeed do just this, presumably because they get frustrated at atheists not putting forth any positive claims or having a known ideology or history that they can attack in retaliation for all the butt-kicking they receive from atheists regarding their claims and beliefs. They can't accept the critiques and can't find something about atheism itself to attack, so they'll erect a Communist strawman to beat on instead.

Most of the time you post things that make sense. This isn't one of those times.

Well, it's more or less exactly the same thing as the OP or whoever it was who attack "Christians" for actions which only a few do.

If we are to do anything but cause more hatred between the sides, both sides need to stop assuming that one can repay with the same coin one has received, for not the person receiving that treatment back is not going to be the same person who treated you bad in the first place. Debaters are individuals. If we assume that they all use the same arguments and feel comfortable in stooping to that level, the debate will spiral forever down.
