I understand how some people become confused given that both the Russian and Western media continually mis-characterize the aspirations of those in the east of Ukraine for their own respective narrow political objectives. Russian-speaking identification with Russia in the east of Ukraine is not the same thing as claiming that the said Russian speakers desire to be swallowed up by Russia. The problem is that many people falsely conflate the question of the Russian speakers in Ukraine with that of Russian ethnicity in order to perpetuate a disingenuous argument about the alleged desire of the east to merge with Russia. The truth is the Crimea was the only ethnic Russian majority province in Ukraine. Donetsk does not have an ethnic Russian majority, only a Russian speaking majority – just like Cardiff in Wales has an English speaking majority. The difference is key to understanding the situation. The former UK diplomat, Craig Murray, hits the nail on the head:

"It is true that key political attitudes do correlate closely to the linguistic split, with Russian speakers identifying with the ousted government, and favouring closer ties with Russian over closer ties with the West, while Ukrainian speakers overwhelmingly favour EU integration. But that does not translate into a general desire by the Russian speakers to secede from a Ukraine that goes the other way. The key to this is that two thirds of Russian speaking Ukrainian nationals view themselves as ethnically Ukrainian, not Russian. Only a third of Russian speakers, a sixth of the general population, regard themselves as ethnically Russian. It does appear to be true that among those who view themselves as ethnically Russian, there is a significant desire for union with Russia, and that there is probably a majority in some Eastern provinces for that idea, probably including Crimea. The one video that is in the upper left corner is a fake. But there are lot of other evidence of tactical missle shelling, including the testimonies the people I trust.

btw videos should have comments on. Any source that has its own comments disabled is not very credible or at least difficult to keep track on the truth, since you can not post that this video is fake. IMHO of course.
