A federal police officer pointed a gun at the head of an Uber driver last week in Salt Lake City, authorities said.

Driver James Brothers said he picked up a group from a bar Oct. 20 and dropped off a man and woman at a party after they had a disagreement with a third passenger.

He said the remaining passenger, later identified as 44-year-old Byron McDonald, acted paranoid after he attempted to make small talk.

“Typically I’ll ask people where they’re from or from out of town, but he just wouldn’t give me any info,” Brothers said.

Then the passenger began asking strange questions in a slurred voice.

“He asked, ‘Do you want to live or die?’” Brothers told KSL-TV. “So I said, ‘Well, I want to live, of course.’”

McDonald asked the driver about his 3-year-old daughter and girlfriend – neither of which Brothers has – as they arrived at the downtown Hilton.

Then McDonald put a gun to the driver’s head and then moved the weapon down so it was pointed at Brothers’ side.

“I just thought, ‘I’m going to bail because I’m not going to sit around and wait for what’s going to happen,’” Brothers said.

Brothers said he grabbed his phone from the dashboard, pulled the keys from the ignition, and tried to jump out the driver’s side door.
McDonald grabbed his shirt collar and tried to pull the driver back into the vehicle, but he broke free and fled.

Byron McDonald was arrested on Oct. 20 and a day later, charged with aggravated assault, a third degree felony. Nedra Darling, spokesperson for the Department of the Interior which oversees BIA, said McDonald is a Lieutenant with the Bureau of Indian Affairs Justice Services and he was on "official travel at the time of the incident." McDonald bailed out of the Salt Lake County Jail on Saturday, after the Salt Lake County District Attorney filed the criminal charge. Darling said in the written statement that BIA is investigating and will determine what steps to take next.

.....The District Attorney said surveillance video from the hotel supports Brothers' story. McDonald was arrested in the hotel.

 

True, we need to deal with that issue far better than this country has up to now.

Geez if this guy's doing this to an Uber driver, imagine what he's doing to the Native Americans on the Reservation too scared to report him.

I am confused, cops would never do that, try and grab someone and try to pull them back in the car when they are trying to flee?

The problem with posting the initial story of an event is that it's always short on details and that causes people to go off on tangents. The updates usually fill in the blanks the writer of the original story didn't get to, such as who, what, when, why, and how.

 

There are over 3000 BIA police. One asshat no more constitutes the entire bunch than one jerk at Occupy Oakland or at a Tea Party rally defines the entire group.

McDonald is going to be fired, charged and probably do time. Not much, maybe even house arrest since no one was hurt, but he's certainly not going to carry a gun for the Feds anymore because that (*)(*)(*)(*) isn't condoned.

Anyone who says he's typical of those Americans working for our government is absurdly deluded.

 

Seriously? With all the corruption, incompetence, porn surfing, drug dealing at the VA, waste, fraud and abuse that goes on and no one ever seems to get fired, anyone who says he's not typical hasn't had much, if any contact with Government workers.

 

I was in the military for 21 years and continue to work with the Feds on aviation security and safety issues.

What is your experience in working government employees?

 

A licensed guy with a gun with permit to carry all the time, well trained! Yep, another 'good guy' with a gun!

The story sounds like the beginnings of an interesting action movie. The guy with the gun was black. He was threatening the white driver. I would hardly call him good. Are you implying that black people are evil and are trying to kill us innocent white folk?

Why don't you tell us how you really feel?

 

I don't think he has mental issues. Believing you have absolute immunity no matter what you do leads to some bizarre behavior. That belief is not irrational.
