A perfectly good question. Just what do GOP leaders plan for the 114th Congress - and the various state legislatures? Will they listen to the voters and the new members they elected or will they stick to their old ways?

Do you want fantasies or realities? Start with the realities-

1. They'll "try" to repeal Obamacare. Give up after a veto threat. Then try to go after some parts of it. If Obama hangs tough, the Congress will back down since they have no "threat" to use against him....since McConnell has already stated there will be NO Government Shutdowns. Thus unilaterally disarming the GOP Congress.

2. Boehner and McConnell will BEG the President not to act on immigration...until they craft a bill that Republicans can vote for with a "process towards legal status"....that Republicans especially the 2016 Presidential Candidate can use to try to woo Latino voters.....even as it angers the Nativist Base with "amnesty by another name". (They can be ignored)

3. Budget showdown...but again, McConnell has taken Shutdown off the table. So what can he threaten with....more likely? A deal that saves a few billion and the GOP claims "major deficit reduction"....a pittance compared to how the deficit has ALREADY come down.

4. Some kind of "tax reform"...which naturally to Republicans means another big tax cut for millionaires and corporations. If it's small, Obama might agree. If it's big, he won't, citing how every time it's been tried before since Reagan...it leads to ballooning deficits.

5. Some throwaway bills on abortion. The President vetos them or threatens to. GOP give up....use it as fodder for the Social Cons claiming "A Republican President would sign that in 2017!!!!" (a lie)

6. A Keystone Pipeline deal. If McConnell can get enough Democrats, Obama may allow it. Going to be pointless as gas prices are already dropping. (See: deficits above)

7.. Naming things after Ronald Reagan.

8. Jockeying for time on CSPAN-2 by Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and Rand Paul....between trips to Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina.

Now.....the fantasies-

1. Privatizing Social Security and Medicare.

2. Cutting Government back to the size it was in 1920.

3. "Forcing" Obama to bomb Iran with Bibi and the Boys.

4. Passing the "Human Life Amendment" and the "Federal Marriage Amendment" with massive public support.

and of course 5. Impeaching and removing from office Barack Obama for numerous Constitutional crimes including but not limited to...being black while President.

The Republicans must consider both the ends and the means. The ends chosen should be determined by a consistent theory of the relationship of the individual to the state. To a classical liberal like myself, this means a limited government focused on social order, national defense, infrastructure improvement, and regulation of private monopoly, while limiting federal programs of wealth transfer and income redistribution. The guiding light in this venture is to reduce government subsidies that alter the balance of competitive forces, and to lighten the burden of regulation across the board by cutting back on the endless sets of permits that must be obtained before engaging in any economically productive activity.

Most North American churches have a desire to assist the poor and the oppressed. Well….. in 2014 efforts by a group of socially active Christians could easily transform dozens of homeless people into actors….. who are playing the role of homeless people….. and the specific efforts to help them could becomes scenes in a series of documentary and reality films designed to give the homeless people a job that finances their getting an apartment or at least a group home.

Most of us are unaware of the Worgl, Austria local currency experiment that was conducted during the Great Depression and how successfully it was copied in hundreds of communities in the USA. As a matter of fact…… it looks like what these communities accomplished played a significant role in inspiring the USA government to alter the monetary system in many positive ways.

City in Austria Printed Local Currency

Worgl, like many other European towns and cities, was hit hard by the Great Depression. There was mass unemployment; four of the five local factories had closed, and the people were starving in the streets. Nobody had any money to buy anything. One of the features of an economic depression is that there is not enough money in circulation to ensure that people can meet their basic needs, and in the 1930s, the shortage of currency in many countries of the world became catastrophic.

The mayor of Worgl, together with local businessmen, decided to try to break this economic impasse by creating their own local currency. They printed and issued 60,000 Austrian shillings worth of local currency. These shillings could only be spent in Worgl, so they remained in the local community and were exchanged over and over again.

The positive impact was immediate and surprising to everyone. In only six weeks, unemployment disappeared, all the factories had reopened and everyone had food. For the inhabitants of Worgl, the economic depression was gone. This dramatic transformation became known as the “miracle of Worgl.” Surrounding towns, inspired by the success of Worgl, immediately started printing their own local currencies.

Sadly, the miracle did not last long. When the Austrian Central Bank heard about Worgl’s local currency, they initiated legal proceedings against the mayor and local businessmen. According to Austrian banking law, it was illegal for anyone except the Austrian Central Bank to issue money. The bank won the court case, and the mayor was ordered to shut down the local currency, which he did, under threat of imprisonment. The town then returned to the devastating economic depression of the 1930s, with all the human pain and suffering associated with this catastrophe. Factories closed, and once again, the people starved.

Alternative Currency in the U.S.

Irving Fisher, an American professor of economics at Yale University, visited Worgl before the local currency was suppressed and witnessed the ‘miracle’ firsthand. When he returned to the United States, Fisher spread the word by traveling and lecturing across the country, advocating the use of the Worgl ‘scrip’ everywhere. Inspired by his vision, hundreds of communities began issuing their own currency, and by 1934 there were over 1,000 local communities using ‘scrip’ throughout the U.S.

Every one of these communities experienced a tremendous rejuvenation of their local economies. They thrived while others suffered. Fisher then met with President Franklin D. Roosevelt, proposing the implementation of government-sanctioned local ‘scrip’ in every community in America. When FDR consulted with his top financial advisors and bankers, however, he was advised to shut all the ‘scrip’ systems down, which he did. Instead, he borrowed large amounts of money from bankers, at interest, and used it to pay for the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and the other work-creation projects, which collectively came to be known as the ‘New Deal.’ So ended the last widespread use of a local currency within the U.S.

On this score, the first step for the Republicans is to make it explicit that further regulation and new taxes are off the table, period. More specifically, the Republicans should emphatically reject the advice of the forlorn New York Times that writes as if another stimulus program, a living wage, a revitalized labor movement, and further constraints on international trade will produce the needed jolt to grow an economy, which in truth needs more bed rest and less government intervention.

During the Civil War (1861-1865), President Lincoln needed money to finance the War from the North. The Bankers were going to charge him 24% to 36% interest. Lincoln was horrified and went away greatly distressed, for he was a man of principle and would not think of plunging his beloved country into a debt that the country would find impossible to pay back.
Eventually President Lincoln was advised to get Congress to pass a law authorizing the printing of full legal tender Treasury notes to pay for the War effort. Lincoln recognized the great benefits of this issue. At one point he wrote:
“... (we) gave the people of this Republic the greatest blessing they have ever had – their own paper money to pay their own debts...”
The Treasury notes were printed with green ink on the back, so the people called them “Greenbacks”.
Lincoln printed 400 million dollars worth of Greenbacks (the exact amount being $449,338,902), money that he delegated to be created, a debt-free and interest-free money to finance the War. It served as legal tender for all debts, public and private. He printed it, paid it to the soldiers, to the U.S. Civil Service employees, and bought supplies for war.

In 1972, the United States Treasury Department was asked to compute the amount of interest that would have been paid if that 400 million dollars would have been borrowed at interest instead of being issued by Abraham Lincoln. They did some computations, and a few weeks later, the United States Treasury Department said the United States Government saved 4 billion dollars in interest because Lincoln had created his own money. So you can about imagine how much the Government has paid and how much we owe solely on the basis of interest.

PROF VEERABHADRAN RAMANATHAN: The stunning part of the experiment was this pollutant layer which was three kilometre thick, cut down the sunlight reaching the ocean by more than 10%.
NARRATOR: A 10% fall in sunlight meant that particle pollution was having a far bigger effect than anyone had thought possible.
PROF VEERABHADRAN RAMANATHAN: Our models led us to believe the human impact on the dimming was close to half to one per cent. So what we discovered was tenfold.

NARRATOR: INDOEX showed that the pollution particles were blocking some sunlight themselves; but far more significant was what they were doing to the clouds. They were turning them into giant mirrors. Clouds are made of droplets of water. These only form when water vapour in the atmosphere starts to condense on the surface of naturally occurring airborne particles, typically pollen or sea salt. As they grow, the water droplets eventually become so heavy they fall as rain. But Ramanathan found that polluted air contained far more particles than the unpolluted air, particles of ash, soot and sulphur dioxide.

It sounds like the first bill that is going to the President's desk is the Keystone Pipeline. But the most important bill that should go to his desk is a repeal of the individual mandate. Knowing that Obama is going to veto any bill on ObamaCare anway, the individual mandate is the one you want him to veto.

I didn't read all of that because I don't think anyone should take the current political AGW hysteria seriously, especially since the models are so wrong and over 100 of the predictions have failed.

But…. how could we go wrong if we adopted the Carl Cantrell approach?

This angle on stabilization of the climate can be sold to "conservatives" and it could greatly assist in bringing peace to the Middle EAst.

Wirh Americans recognizing that the nation is recovering from the mess Bush/Cheney had left, the best thing Repubs can do is stay the present course that is working, and not revert and retrogress.

Majority of Americans say things are going well

Washington (CNN) -- For the first time since 2007, a majority of Americans think things are going well in the nation, a new CNN/ORC International poll found.

It's a slim majority just 52 percent of Americans said things are going well, while 48 percent said things are going badly but it's the most positive appraisal of the state of the nation that the poll has found since January of 2007.

And it marks consistent improvement in the mood of the nation over the past few months, despite a series of national security crises and continued gridlock in Washington. In September, 50 percent of respondents said things were going well.


Poll shows American optimism is up

Economic sentiments have improved over the past year as well. Though just one-third of Americans believe the nation's economy is starting to recover, that marks an 8-point increase from a year ago, when 24 percent said the same.

A plurality, 41 percent, say the economy has stabilized, a 5-point improvement from November of 2013.

And just 26 percent of Americans say the country's economic conditions are getting worse, a decline from the 39 percent who said so in 2013.
But the mood of the nation isn't consistently positive in the new CNN/ORC poll it suggests both a gender and geographic divide.

Men are both more positive about the state of the nation and the economy than women, the poll shows. Fifty-five percent of men say things are going well in America, compared to 48 percent of women who say the same; 36 percent of men believe the economy is recovering, while only 28 percent of women say the same.

And economic conditions appear to be better in the Northeast and Midwest than they are in the southern and western parts of the nation, as respondents are more likely in those regions to say the economy is improving. They're also more likely to say that things are going well than their counterparts in the South and West.

That's the first thing that needs to be on the agenda. After that an Obamacare vote, a Keystone vote, and tax reform. They might go 0/3 and the Obamacare vote will definitely fail, but I expect there to be legislation on all of these.
