Abovealpha, you are wrong again. Russia is evolving and so do Russian politicians. Putin is still growing and he will stay in history as a great Russian leader of post Soviet era. Every goo d leader has EGO. Everything depends what his ego is doing. Putin does great job for Russia and for the world. You overlooked the changes from Andropov to Putin. However, Andropov made one move, which determined history of the world: he had hand picked M. Gorbachev and added him to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. Thus, M. Gorbachev was the only man among ruling elite of that time, who did not go through long routine filters, climbing power ladder. I hope you know the rest of the story.

I honestly believe that Russia wanted to be a part of the west, However, EU and NATO rejected Russian advances. Moreover, EU and NATO advanced eastward, surrounding Russia with military bases. Even now, Putin is open to dialogue and cooperation.
You may find it in interviews on the news. Now, this is a thing of the past. Russia showed flexibility and versatility , cooperation with China is a factor of global importance.

I honestly believe that young Russians will easily live through temporary austerity, because that austerity is nothing by comparison with what their parents had to live through. I grew up under conditions of 'austerity': no running water (we had a well), and shorteges in groceries, but we had clean water, fresh air and quality foods from our own garden and animals. This was not the worst part of our life at all. We had more serious problems then. Now, Russia is very different, indeed. They have freedom we could not even dream of then.

Granted Russian's certainly have more freedom than they did under Stalin....but we have this thing known as the INTERNET.

It was developed by both the U.S. Military and Brits.

When you compare the level of freedom existing in Europe and the United States compared to that in Russia it is a stark comparison.

What I worry about is how bad is Putin willing to allow the Russian Economy to get?

I am sure you are aware that at any moment of choice the United States could force the entire Russian Economy to collapse and that is certainly something we DO NOT WANT TO DO!!

We didn't even want to apply sanctions but Putin's actions forced us as it is in the National Security Interests of the United States for Russia to have a strong economy.

Do you see our dilema?

And then Putin making all these absolutely absurd statements about Russia going to war with the U.S. being inevitable?

WE know that's not going to happen.

Putin certainly knows that's not going to happen.

But the question remains just how many Russian Nationalists believe that could hapen?

Hopefully not many.

I can agree in principle that an unbalanced, delusional ego can, indeed, be a dangerous thing. Barack Obama comes to mind....

Putin surely has an ego, but if you've studied him then you know his rather humble beginnings, right through the time of his postings in East Germany were anything but a series of cheering crowds and campaign pep-rallies, with everyone hanging on his every word, ready to kiss his ass on any pretext.
His great love, his great concern, and his only focus is the Rodina -- the "Motherland", Mother Russia!

He's an educated man, and if you know anything about educational standards in Europe you know that there is a vast difference between those and the joke of an "education" system that we have grown accustomed to in the United States. It would be mostly pointless if we were to try to compare Putin's Bachelor's Degree from Leningrad State University and Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from St. Petersburg State University with, say, Barack Obama's academic achievements. Besides, Obama has his own school records permanently shut to public view anyway....

But is Putin dangerous? Of course he's dangerous! I would never engage in a game of brinksmanship with a man of his depth, intelligence, and experience unless I knew for an undisputed fact that I had the ability to destroy him and his precious Russia with near-impunity, and, that he also knew it. What no one seems to understand is that we haven't seen anyone quite like Vladimir Putin since World War II. He's everything we really do NOT want to have in an adversary, especially when we have an inept, distracted, disinterested, posturing, self-indulgent adolescent like Barack Obama leading our team.

The federal government has significantly expanded undercover operations in recent years, with officers from at least 40 agencies posing as business people, welfare recipients, political protesters and even doctors or ministers to ferret out wrongdoing, records and interviews show.

At the Supreme Court, small teams of undercover officers dress as students at large demonstrations outside the courthouse and join the protests to look for suspicious activity, according to officials familiar with the practice.

At the Internal Revenue Service, dozens of undercover agents chase suspected tax evaders worldwide, by posing as tax preparers, accountants drug dealers or yacht buyers and more, court records show.

Government undercover work has become so extreme that sometimes undercover agents from one agency end up investigating undercover agents from another agency. In fact, there have been times when agents from different government agencies have pulled weapons on each other without even realizing it…

The extent of those secret operations within the departments can be so high that it leads to severe overlap, such as one undercover agent investigating an alleged criminal, who also turns out to be a fed on duty, law enforcement officials said.

In addition I don't know what kind of people sit in the US/NATO strategic policy and planning teams these days. One thing for sure, they're not the brightest bulbs in the box.
