This is something interesting. The reason Erdogan was so adamant about Assad going, as well as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the EU and US, was so oil and gas could be brought through Syria to Turkey and Europe; thereby by passing Russia's monopoly. Everything to hurt Russia, the West's eternal enemy. It's embedded in their DNA.

These idiocies of Washington and the EU might end up as a blessing in disguise, the way the sanctions did on food from the EU. At that time what was perceived as a punishment, was turned into a blessing by giving Russia the chance to develop it's own potential, and this time the blessing might be in bringing some peace to Syria. At least this is probably what Putin is hoping for, he did say he wanted to a force for peace wherever he could. Here's something from the Asia Times by my favorite writer, Pepe Escobar:

"...So what now? Will Erdogan abandon his "Assad must go" obsession? It’s too early to tell. The Turkish Foreign Ministry is spinning to the media that Washington and Ankara are about to agree on a no-fly zone along the Turkish-Syria border - even as the White House, earlier this week, insisted the idea had been scrapped.

The House of Saud is like a camel lost in the Arctic. The House of Saud’s lethal game in Syria always boiled down to regime change so that the Saudi-sponsored oil pipeline from Syria to Turkey might be built. Now the Saudis see Russia about to supply all of Turkey’s energy needs - and still be positioned to sell more gas to the EU in the near future. And Assad still won’t go.

But it is US neo-cons who are sharpening their poisonous spears with gusto. As soon as early 2015 there may be a Ukrainian Freedom Act in the US House of Representatives. Translation: Ukraine being dubbed a "major US non-NATO ally", which means, in practice, a virtual NATO annexation. Next step: more turbo-charged neo-con provocation of Russia.

A possible scenario is vassal/puppies such as Romania or Bulgaria, pressed by Washington, deciding to allow full access of NATO vessels into the Black Sea. Who cares that this would violate current Black Sea agreements that affect both Russia and Turkey?

And then there’s a dangerous Rumsfeldian "known unknown": how the fragile Balkans will feel subordinated to the whims of Ankara. As much as Brussels keeps Greece, Bulgaria and Serbia in a strait jacket, in energy terms they will start depending on Turkey’s goodwill.

For the moment, let’s appreciate the magnitude of the geopolitical shockwaves after Putin’s latest judo/chess/go combo. And get ready for another chapter of Russia’s "pivoting across Eurasia". Putin hits Delhi next weekend. Expect another geopolitical bombshell.

I wish I could infer things like Putin's kremlin goofballs. They'll try and convince you that the sun rise happens because Putin demanded it.

Oil never was the only reason for wanting Assad gone. Syria is a key link in the Shia crescent.

The desire to bring Syria to heel and breaking the crescent remains, though it may have just gotten harder to see done.

Good move on Putin's part. And not a shot fired. Quite different from our MO.

Turkey is very dependent on Russia, by the fact that Putin was to buy goods, to give the work of Turkish firms to invest money (dollar) in Turkey. Turkey's economy began to rise, Turkey to sell Russia, thus moving away from Europe, Turkey, Saudi Arabia (Arabic), USA. Soon Turkey will be fully supported by Russia, Belarus, as in the whole agrees with Putin (Russia). But should only increase the exchange of goods between Russia and Turkey, Belarus, to start to invest in the economy of another country (Turkey)! While Russia invests money and helps other countries get richer, the ally (Turkey, Belarus) are ready to praise Putin and do whatever you say Putin (Russia)!

Assad is certainly preferable than those who would replace him.

One might expect RepubloCratic foreign policy to "get it".

No nation ruled by a "strong man", an authoritarian, is better off today
because :flagus: recently toppled the mean Baathist dictator. Name one.

Why you don't like Pepe Escobar? I love him. But then again I love brilliance and I love satire... and he has them both.

Washington's doctrine is to never to do anything for humane or just reasons, only money and votes count. Hmmm! Or except maybe for revenge and to retain power as well.

I think the recent torture report should shake up American government and American minds. I believe this is a very big international scandal. After all what had happened, how we will justify our political doings abroad? No wonder, massacre in Odessa or neo Nazi in Kiev remain ignored. Putin, dealing wit China, India and Turkey is doing much better. He is morally superior.

You people really need to stop using "our" and "we" when referring to the United States, you're not fooling anyone. You didn't come to this forum until Euromaidan and every single post you make is either predicting the inevitable collapse of the US economy or Putin sycophancy.

Same goes for you regarding "our" and "we" when referring to the United States, you're about as American as turnip soup comrade.

There was no massacre in Odessa, the pro-Russian terrorists lit the fire and it is the Russians in Donetsk who are the neo-Nazi skinheads in fact one of them is the self appointed governor.

The arrogance with which u call white black and black white is showing that u are not interested in the truth but just in spouting nonsense. There were not even 1 single russian killed in Odessa massacre, all of them were from Odessa. There are plenty of video facts who was firing and shooting people in the building. But hey, it doesn't suits ur position so continue to pretend that black is actually white. Backing murderers and criminals showing how hopeless and hypocrite you are.

Oil is below $60, the Russian ruble has completely collapsed, so has the Russian stock market, the Russian economy is disintegrating as we speak, even Putin's investment in gold is losing value, Russia lost Ukraine for generations and all other Russia's neighbors are equally resentful and moving away from Moscow.

All that Putin's "pivoting across Eurasia" does not seem to impress the world in the slightest as market consensus clearly indicates, if those moves were promising and not desperate and pathetic as they truly are - Russian stock/currency markets would stabilize or grow, not continue dropping like a rock.

Well done judo/chess/go grand master/genius of all times and peoples, truly amazing record of accomplishments LOL

Perhaps because he does not live in the real world, he is a lunatic catering to lunatics...Admiring a dear leader, whose foreign and economic policies have completely failed, who have isolated and bankrupted his country is a sign of mild mental disease.

There was no violence in Ukraine outside Maidan until Putin invaded it....And in Odessa the violence was started by pro-Russian thugs, it's been demonstrated and proven dozens of times. They have themselves only to blame that they got more than they bargained for.

The only people who lie are the payed Russian trolls claiming to be from the west in broken English, the fire was started when one of the Russian terrorists inside the building threw a molotov at a closed window.

An amateur YouTube video appears to show a line of riot police shielding pro-Russian activists, one of whom fires a gun while chunks of paving stone rain down from the crowd on the other side.

A number of reports also spoke of armed protesters using the rooftop of the Afina shopping centre to fire pistols and throw Molotov cocktails.

But Serhiy said he saw someone "on the third floor throw a Molotov cocktail through the closed window. However, the glass didn't break and a fire started inside".
