there are mercenaries and idealistic volunteers in Ukraine, from many countries. Mostly mercenaries on the kievian side, and volunteers on the Donbas-Lugansk side. The eastern part of Donbas is mostly populated by russian ukrainians, and many of them are now refugees in Russia (1/4 refugees in Ukraine, 3/4 in Russia, probably according to ethno-cultural lines russian|ukrainian). Among russian nationalists, there's a strong feeling for russian ukrainians in Donbas. Russian governement doesn't need to do anything, volunteers are many, on their own initiative.
In fact the russian government is quite moderate. The ultra-nationalists are elsewhere than among the followers of the leading party.
Foreigners fighting on the Donbas side are usually against american imperialism, for eurasian policies, and anti-jihadists. The U$-Saudi-Wahhabi axis vs. european-centric roots and traditions.
At random, one among hundreds of foreign supporting blogs, around foreign helpers and volunteers (that one in french): http://alawata-rebellion.blogspot.fr
Then, Russia provides weaponery to Donbass one way or the other, for sure. Quite normal. Since winter 2013-14, Kiev and Lvov are full of american and british officials, and military advisors from these countries and Lithuania, Poland. The government in Kiev is remote controlled by foreign powers. For instance the finance minister is an american businesswoman who got citizenship just for the job.
Russia is not fighting in Ukraine. It's the ukrainian governement doing a war on a part of its own population, because they refuse to acknowledge the coup of the 22.02.2014. That coup was a violent overthrowing of a democratically elected president, whatever corrupt or anything else he was. Ukraine is a multi-ethnic country and the coup was operated by armed groups of galicians driven by a intense anti-russian hatred. In Donbas, locals did also their coup, much less violent, and what they got is the ukrainian army sent on them.

They always say that, not only would they not have been to all games to make that assessment, but it generally considered part of the atmosphere to talk it all up while your there. But I'm sure it was very nice considering how much money was wasted on it.

I think I worked out what all this is about, devalueing the Ruble so more tourists will go to holiday in Sochi, hmmm makes sense in a nonsensical way.

Do they allow homosexuals there I wonder? #putinhintofnazi

You called people who invaded in east Ukraine terrorists it is your right. (the world community doesn't consider them terrorists, only some countries...)
Anyway these allegedly terrorists, simply repeat the same what did terrorists the Ukrainian radicals (all sort of people from Right Sector) - when they occupied of buildings in the west of Ukraine.

Then, they arrived to the capital of Kiev. There was the first clash with the police. The first blood was shed... The president did everything to stop the victims. He asked the help for Europe and Russia. ''Europe told of course, everything has to be peacefully and under the law." Even signed the document.
President Yanukovych at once began to carry out, even removed army as asked. The Right Sector used a situation and violated agreements, began to seize presidential buildings, there was a threat of life to the president.
But America and Europe instead of telling radicals, excuse me Fellers, we civilized people, we observe laws, and won't talk to you, only to the legal president. But there was everything on the contrary, some European leaders together with American exults - having supported Nazis/terrorists / the Right Sector, whatever you call them.

Putin has already done so in the Crimea, and is likely doing so in Ukraine right now. Between worldwide distrust, economic retribution, limited financial capability, and dwindling popular internal support I do not see this ending well for Russia. My hopes revolve around Putin not getting backed into a corner and resorting to extreme actions.

Please provide a link to a source or sources backing your above assertion that "they always say that". Ditto your claim that it is "generally considered part of the atmosphere to talk it up while you're there". Please evidence that.

I happen to agree that the amount of money spent on it was really excessive. The same sort of thing happened in London 2012. But to partly understand that you need to buff up on the history of the IOC, especially its past and present corruption, and the current way they decide to award a games to a given City.

Tecoyah, I would understand had your statement said "western distrust" instead of "worldwide distrust" - but I don't see worldwide distrust. Prove me wrong, okay. Meanwhile, China has supported Russia over Ukraine and sees the US as trying to isolate Russia and adopting a cold war mindset - see HERE.

Given China's status as the world's No 1 economy, this is no light endorsement.

I would also like to see you evidence your claim that Putin has dwindling internal support please?

Define "afghan". Are you refering to the nationals, or the Taliban/Al Qaeda factions? There's a difference.

No one is chasing US troops anywhere. The United States seized the capital in three days, and now the Taliban are hiding in the depths of the deepest mountain caves. I know, I've been there :).

They only come out to pop off a few AK rounds and then they run back in.

We defeated the Taliban stronghold in a record 3 days. IMO, we should have left shortly after that. However, the Triangle still remained so we had to tend to that.

Lol but to go back to your hilarious remark, no one is chasing the US troops anywhere. Seems like the Ukrainians are popping off on those Russians though :)

For Example. Russia is located on the Eurasian continent, where the main, fundamental part of its territory in which is located the majority of the population - far away from the ocean and sea spaces. The average altitude above sea level guarantees protection against flooding even when the catastrophic scale phenomena, accompanied by a powerful tsunami (mega-tsunami).
A different picture in the United States. In coastal areas, with a slight excess above sea level, is the bulk of the population. It also placed the country's main production facilities. Even relatively weak tsunami height of several tens of meters, can lead to disastrous consequences for the United States.
(Remember the "Katrina" in New Orleans?)
Vulnerable area of the United States from the geophysical point of view, is the San Andreas - the break length of 1300 kilometers between the Pacific and North American plates. It passes along the coast of the territory of the State of California, somewhere on land and partly under water. Are parallel to the faults of the San Gabriel and San Hosinto. This is an area of geophysical instability generating earthquakes with a magnitude of 8.5 on the Richter scale. Impact powerful enough nuclear weapon can trigger catastrophic events that can completely destroy the infrastructure of the United States on the Pacific coast-scale tsunami.
Finally we must not forget about the Atlantic and Pacific transform faults. Lying parallel to the shoreline, respectively east and west coasts of the US, they can be a source of major tsunami that will cause catastrophic damage to a considerable depth from the coast.
Delivery of ammunition to the destination can be achieved in different ways. First of all - on several heavy ballistic missiles, which, starting in conjunction with rockets ensure - guaranteed to be able to overcome all possible, even in the distant future missile defense system.
This missile is designed for strategic submarines of the "Typhoon" (Project 941). Their missile silos are designed for 96-ton P-39, which allows "with reserve" install modern heavy rocket having the desired throw-weight.
(In 1961, on the northern tip of the New Earth at an altitude of more than five thousand meters was blown up the largest in the history of thermonuclear warheads. From the known estimates - 58 Mt (Megaton). But Western experts have come to the conclusion that it was not apparent power, since a number of features was not a shell of uranium-238, the ability to increase the explosive power of at least one and a half to two times, that is, more than 100 Mt. Ammunition was made in the weight and size characteristics of the 16-ton bomb that was dropped from the Tu-95. Today munition such power to execute within 5-7 tons.)

And let's not forget about the Yellowstone supervolcano. Even a single ground explosions 5-7-ton ammunition initiates powerful eruption. As a result, the US will cease to exist, though for the rest of the world, the effects will be catastrophic. At least least of all to suffer Russia - due to the distance from the eruption site, the size of the territory and location.

Apocalypse - simply and inexpensively.

I had to stifle a tiny giggle when I saw the Tsunami threat post and your riposte. A case of the parting of the ways between a tactical armchair genius and geographical reality.

I hadn't previously really considered what you outlined in the rest of your post, but it makes perfect sense too.

It is a well argued and cogent post, I think.

The peculiarity of Russia is that the main part of its territory in Siberia is located on thick (several kilometers) layers of basalt. It is assumed that these platforms formed by the eruption of supervolcano, which occurred about a quarter of a billion years ago. Therefore strikes, even extremely powerful, will not lead to catastrophic geophysical consequences.
What's in the US? First of all, attention is drawn to Yellowstone National Park, located in the caldera of the same name supervolcano, which, according to geologists, close to the period of its activation, which occurs at a frequency of 600 thousand years.
Therefore it suffices relatively small strike, for example the impact of the munition megaton class to initiate an eruption. The consequences will be catastrophic for the United States - a country just disappears. US geophysical point of view, is very vulnerable.
Another option mega strike - initiation of giant tsunami. This idea of Andrei Sakharov. The point is to blow up some ammunition in reference points along the Atlantic and Pacific transform faults (within 3-4 each) at a depth of six to eight kilometers. As a result, according to the calculations of Sakharov and other scientists formed wave, which is off the coast of the United States will reach a height of 400-500 meters or more. Collapsed on the mainland, it will wash away all at a distance of over 500 kilometers. If explosions produce at great depths, near the bottom, where the crust in places most docking plate is thin, it can be locally destroyed, and the magma comes into contact with ocean water, repeatedly reinforce the force of the explosion.
In this case, the height of the tsunami will reach about mile, and the zone of destruction exceeds 1,500 kilometers from the coast. This will only "clean" weapons - nuclear winter will not come, because they do not form a gigantic dust clouds and water vapor will fall to the ground as a monstrous radioactive showers near its formation, that is, the same US.
Such an attack is definitely initiates tectonic activity throughout the region, including, quite possibly, the eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano and. Backward wave will wash Europe. That is the whole NATO. Monstrous will cataclysm.
Western civilization would cease to exist.
To catastrophic geophysical consequences will undermine even one powerful ammunition in the area of the San Andreas Fault, San Gabriel or San Hosinto.

Which goes to prove, I think, that the sanity of Mutally Assured Destruction.

I'm told that John Bolton said on Fox News the other day that there should be a pre-emptive strike on Iran to stop any chance of nuclear weapons being developed. This was followed with John McCain's comment that Israel should go "rogue" and more or less was a confirmation of the Bolton madness - and Neocon central, the New York Times, published an article on 26th March 2015, by Bolton where he again set out his plans for an Israeli first strike.

These people need to be urgently locked away in padded rooms where they can cause any further harm to the world.

An alternative, I suppose, would be to insist they travel to the designated targets that Bolton identifies, and wave a warm welcome to the approaching Israeli aircraft...

Interesting fantasy, I mean no one in their right mind would do something like this. No one could really know what would happen, it could basically wipe out humanity. MAD is still in place, if any side goes to full scale war world is over.

I am surprised at how poorly they are doing against a seriously substandard army fielded by Ukraine. It seems the Russian 'volunteers' require pretty big numbers to reliably and quickly win despite having the advantage of Russian arms, heavy weapons and trained troops.

One of the few things we agree on thus far, Oxymoron. But I doubt it was fantasy per see but rather theoretical war-game possibilities. But yes, it is madness and let's hope and pray that someone doesn't come along with a weapon that destroys our current mad sanity.

I am a fan of the nation being attacked by the Russian empire as they try to grow by force....Appeasing the rascals will only lead to more aggression closer to Western Europe. I worry about the Baltic States in a world where the Russians are aggressive and my government is appeasing. I am hearing this generations Lord Halifax is fixing to announce a deal with Iran...If true I'm placing another order for more emergency food.

Then why are you still not at war against the "weak and drunken Russian"? Why delay the inevitable?
The conflict between Russia and the US principled, irreconcilable contradictions, the opposition has gone too far. Yield to no one, and war - the last argument, and the rest of the arguments already put on the table. And did not impress.
That is, from a political point of view, expanding the zone of war in Europe, a direct confrontation between NATO and Russia is the only way for the United States to increase pressure on Russia.
But The .....
1. Demonstration US actions in Eastern Europe are more likely imitation - attracted too small contingents. They indicate the presence, but not sufficient even for any lengthy defense of the countries in which they reside.
2. and it is much more important, the United States simply can not expand in Europe today full military group that would be able to adequately resist the Russian armed forces. And it's not a lack of US troops. In United States, in principle, suffice. Just army, fighting away from home shores, must have strong rear and reliable communication. But with this problem.
3. European elites are seriously concerned about adventurous politics of Washington
4. Europe's growing anti-American sentiment among the population. Slogans out of NATO and the EU in Eastern Europe become popular.
5. any major war requires the mobilization measures(Russia - not Libya). How disrupted mobilize Ukrainians, we have already seen. There is no reason to believe that Europeans are more militaristic.
6. there is a risk that some countries will simply refuse to fight, and it will break the united front of both technically and politically. And their range is very wide. From Slovakia and Bulgaria to France and Italy potentially objectors may not be less than those who support the war.
US loses its ability to influence world politics. And gradually disappearing from the first position.

What to do? Russian must blow up Yellowstone volcano?
