Why is Jeb Bush against the legalization of marijuana, when he smoked it himself?

Shouldn't a former user be more able to judge it? Think about all the things YOU did as a kid, that in hindsight, you realized weren't good things to do.

Sure, I was raised Catholic and now I am not. Does that mean I should be able to eliminate religion for everyone else because of it?

In Jeb's defense, if he were to advocate legalization or decriminalization of weed it would end any chance of being nominated by the GOP. I would bet huge money that Hillary Clinton will take much the same stance on the issue. To advocate decriminalization or outright legalization right now in a national election would be political suicide. Watch how Rand Paul does in the primaries.

I agree. That is probably a topic most of them will avoid. The country is divided on the topic and they could tick off some folks no matter what their actual position is. Not to mention the money they would lose from corporate interests if they went against the status quo.

Pharmaceutical, beer, and cigarette industries are always spending huge money against ballot initiatives aimed at legalization of marijuana. Mainstream whores like Bush and Clinton won't touch this issue with a 10 foot pole. In the GOP it would be suicide as their voters tend to be anti-conservative when it comes to the personal freedoms of those who they don't agree with. In other words, they are phony conservatives. The Democrats as always will be gutless political whores who will take a position only after internal polling indicates that it is safe. I am very happy to see several states ignoring the overblown federal government on this issue and basically just telling them to (*)(*)(*)(*) off. That is priceless!

He's not suggesting eliminating anything. He's suggesting keeping up the current situation.

    We can only speculate.

    1) He is a hypocrite.

    2) He has reformed himself and is penitent.

    3) He likes to fancy himself an outlaw.

    4) Some who bankroll him are drug kingpins.

    5) His operatives' calculus is that his position enhances his electability.

Of course, none of the aforementioned needs to be exclusive.

Like anyone that grows up, what you do when you are young is not how you think when you are mature.

Because he's a politician and he's trying to say the "right things" to make himself look good rather than just being honest. It's hard to get elected if you're honest.

Because most people can't hear the truth. It doesn't fit into their nice little rhetoric box that helps them make sense of the world. So they just get angry and shut it out. It doesn't matter which way you vote either. This is just the majority behavior of people in general.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I want to hear what candidates really think. I don't need to agree with them 100% of the time like the average nut-case liberal.

Because the entire process is dishonest, and deceitful. Any honest person would be scandalized, demonized and vilified before he could finish his first speech. Not to mention the fact that not everybody sees every issue the same way one party does. IOW most folks are swayed by the lies & propaganda, and are completely misinformed and out of touch with reality when it comes to issues that are for the most part emotionally charged.

    - - - Updated - - -

Obviously you are, since you refuse to admit that both sides are more alike than you care to admit, just like your liberal counterpart.

If the two sides are so much alike, why is there so much bitter partisanship?

I was thinking along the same lines. When I was young and stupid, I drove drunk, more than once. That doesn't mean I support drunk driving. In fact if anything, it has made me more hostile toward drunk drivers. I believe someone who drives under the influence and kills someone should be charged with Murder One. You know you've consumed alcohol (or drug). You got behind the wheel. You did it on purpose and knowing full well the ramifications. You maim or kill someone, it's off to prison for you, and possibly the chair. No excuses.

Because, maybe, there's a law on the books that describes it as illegal; and he has not seen it reclassification as a benefit to the people who work in the marijuana industry. It seems to me that the commerce of the commodity is somewhat stable and readily accessible, and people who are jailed for consumption are usually in violation of more egregious crimes that lead to their arrest and subsequent testing for drug abuse.

Let's suppose the smartest person were to campaign for president, but he or she had been a robber-baron type - bank executive who did some insider trading. Do you think it would be a good idea if he were to campaign on the principle of legalizing insider trading?
