These two convicted murderers used some very sophisticated power tools that couldn't have been smuggled in or even more doubtful were available to them on the prison grounds.

Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York is a max security prison with ZERO escapes in its 150 year history.

    http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/07/us/new-york-escapees/

    Two theories:

    1) They had inside help

    2) They had outside help

My personal favorite? - #2: Someone on the outside with the proper metal cutting tools worked their way in backwards FROM the manhole you see in the video and was there to pick them up and take them into Canada on a precise schedule.

What's yours? And btw.. i got dibs on the movie rights! :)

Hope like hell they snag quickly, but this thing involved months if not YEARS of planning. Dangerous dudes, iffin ya see 'em, don't F with 'em.

This is interesting. How is it possible the guards didn't hear the power tools? Who on the outside might be willing to risk prison themselves after these two guys were locked up all these years?

Stories like this make folk heroes out of killers. I hope no one gets hurt.

I hear ya Steve. Apparently the hole they cut in the cell walls (they weren't cellies, but rather next door neighbors so evidently TWO of them must have been cut) were through solid (looks like at least 1/4") steel.

Indeed, even if done from the outside, how did the outside perp if there was one a) not make any noise or b) know exactly where these guys were?

The other potential possibility is the mention of outside contractors that were there with possibly the necessary tools in recent past. But even if they were able to slip these guys the goods, how did they conceal them when bunk shakedowns in max security prisons are a common occurrence?

Also, is there such a thing as a metal cutter with a silencer?

It should be very easy to tell if that pipe was cut from the inside or out. I expect maintenance contractors got it in and them out.

What motivation? These jerkoids have no money. They're perennial losers.

Old partners in crime or something? The more i think about it, the more confused i become.

But i want the movie rights once they figure the damned thing out! ;)

Wow .. indeed. Did they leave a ladder? If so and the weight factor on those covers might lend credence to my outside help working in backwards theory.

Assuming that in the middle of night, one could use a crowbar or such to lift such a thing without awaking the neighbors 50-100 feet away.

And a ladder? Would have HAD to come from the outside.

Man holes usually have a ladder built into the wall of the shaft.

Not only are they heavy because they are cast iron, but, the one's I've seen have rust and dirt packed around the perimeter joint that makes it even harder to open, and lift.
Was once walking down a street in a town called Asbest, in the Urals part of Siberia, and noticed that some man holes had no lid...right in the middle of the street.

Manhole covers get stolen by metal thieves. They are not that hard to move. I used to do it when I was a kid maybe 12 or 13. You don't have to ever pick the whole thing open to get them moved.

That's true, they're built into the side walls. My techs sometimes have to work in manholes (communications) and those things are designed to be opened from above. In order to remove the cover they're provided with a hook that goes into a hole and from there the tech uses his legs to pull it up a few inches and get a little bit of it onto the road surface. From there it's a matter of moving it a few inches at a time until it's completely removed. Needless to say, much of this depends on how strong a person is, but opening one from below would be very hard. Maybe they had someone waiting at that location who helped them open it.

I've never seen or even heard of manhole covers being stolen.

I used to move them for two reasons: to prove I was stronger than my older brother who couldn't and because I was interested in what was under them. In my neighborhood they were fairly shallow. Mostly covering storm drains.

As for the theft, there are plenty of stories about it. Take your choice: https://www.google.com/#q=manhole+cover+theft

I'm with you - I am going with "outside". And the people on the outside - they have balls the size of grapefruits. Where do you think a pair of turd-stains like that got the kind of money needed to pay outside people to do something like this? Because let's face it - that's gotta be about $1M worth of effort and someone paid for it.

Unless for some bizarre reason someone with a lot of money needed this pair of butt nuggets to do something even worse. Maybe they are being hired to ghost a few dozen people? You pretty much know those two aren't FBI moles. So if you need a mall taken out; you might wanna hire these two.

It's obvious when they were younger they learned how to work with their hands and use a drill.

It's only 2015. Nobody has invented cameras, motion detectors, and walls made of AR500 steel yet. But I think by 2200 we might be able to figure out how to stop escapes. Assuming USA is even here in 2200 AD.

First breakout in 150 years from this joint -- TOTALLY transcends the fact that it costs 6-12 times as much as life sentences.

Again, this is about a fascinating prison break.

I was asking for theories.. and you and a few others have failed.

Okay, but you most likely weren't lifting a manhole cover that weighed 300 pounds.
