I'm not too sure the poster you responded to is an American, because he doesn't espouse the values we were raised in...or at least in my generation. Most Americans can be excused for their beliefs, since the propaganda networks here are strong, as you know, but not the posters who visit this web site.

Too much evidence has been presented to them on this forum to profess ignorance of what their country is doing in the world, and in what it has now become. I assume those posters are in compliance with Washington's actions because they have a specific agenda.

Bush and his Administration's fate as a war criminal is eventually going to be sealed by history. They lied to get us to into a war that has cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians, as well as thousands of American soldiers.

 

I think you're bang on target there Jeannette. For those posters here to continue posting the nonsense they do means it is a purposeful decision to either remain blind (which everyone accused the Germans of during WWII, and I consider the US has now reached at least that level of cruelty and crime as the Nazis were guilty of) or they are, in fact, trolls and shills representing US interests. The only other option is that they couldn't care less about anything but like to argue because they have nothing else to fill their lives with.

The OP title is a 100% outright lie. Germany has no more filed war crimes against Bush and the rest, than the United States has declared all police officers are to be murdered because of a Black Live's chant.

There are plenty of people on this site that are either critical of the US or down right anti American that I do not call nor believe are members of the Kremlin troll brigade. Dozens in fact. I have nice peaceful conversations with most of them. You however are one of several members on this forum that are clearly on the payroll. It is beyond obvious. I would also like to take this opportunity to point out that you in no way shape or form actually addressed anything in my post, rather went on some ransom tangent about personal things about myself and my beliefs as well as your own personal opinions. So how about a challenge? I challenge you in your next response to this post to only acknowledge and counter argue these few points.

1. This information is over a year old. Yet you posted it in the Latest US and World News section, straight up ignoring forum rules for posting. Why do this?

2. You straight up and undeniably lied in your title and op, claiming that the nation of Germany has filed a claim against ect, whereas the easily found truth is that only a small number of people who are members of a human rights group that just happens to be located in Germany has. So why lie?

3. Why not have some actually shame and credibility and post the truth and also post this in the correct thread section?

Unless you are going to adress these 3 points, DO NOT REPLY TO ME AGAIN. Say nothing whatsoever unless it is in reference to those 3 points. Once you have done this then and only then can we play some different games.

Any way. Realizing that ones nation is not a perfect angel and is responsible for its fair share of wrong doings just like any other nation (what all most all of us including my self realize) and believing that the US is responsible for every economical, natural or social disaster, every war, every crime, every death, every explosion, every bad thing that ever had or will happen, is 2 totally different things. LBJ did not lie. The North Vietnamese did attack U.S. destroyers. The actual attack was in broad daylight two days before the so called Gulf of Tonkin attack.

Problem was that the media obscured the real attack two days earlier (admitted to by the North Vietnamese as the captain of one of the torpedo boats was killed by U.S. gunfire) with the attack that didn't actually happen.

LBJ himself expressed skepticism about the later "Gulf of Tonkin" attack.

Polk definitely lied about the reasons for the Mexican War. Even Lincoln called him on it.

You can never seriously claim that Bush and the admin. lied given that the CIA Director assured Bush to his face that the evidence in favor of WMDs was a "slam dunk".

As a non-American, I find the hyperbole on both sides of this seeming argument a bit much. For starters, I do not view the USA as 'the evil empire' or any such thing. As a people, Americans are amongst the friendliest, most pleasant, and most generous it has been my good fortune to meet. As a political/national entity, the USA is like every other powerful nation - it acts under several guises in its own interests. So what else is new? My country, and every other national entity on earth does the same thing - while making polite noises. We do not draw as much attention because we are not as powerful as the USA, and we do not affect the lives of as many people around the globe.

Whether non-Americans like it or not, the USA is still the most powerful nation on earth. Does that make it 'the greatest society'? The answer to that would largely depend upon one's definition of that rather vague term 'great'. Is it the largest in terms of land mass and population - obviously not. Is it the wealthiest? Arguably so - but its national debt gives one pause for thought. Is it technologically pre-eminent? Again arguably so - but so much scientific and medical research happens in Europe, it is difficult to quantify. Is it the most advanced sociologically? The level of inequality, poverty, and lack of social justice in some areas might suggest otherwise. So basically, the USA, like any of our nations, is something of the proverbial curate's egg - parts of it are excellent.

None of the above should be taken to mean that Americans should not be proud of their achievements over the past two centuries or so - the transformation from a bunch of rebellious colonies to the most powerful nation on earth is not to be sneezed at. But perhaps that of which Americans can be the most proud are the characteristics of the common people (to which I referred above).

As for the OP comprising an outright lie (as claimed,) that is a nonsense. The organisation concerned was German, and if not punctiliously accurate, it is not a deliberately misleading statement. The intention was obvious.

And yes, the USA has been responsible - directly and indirectly, for very many deaths over the past two hundred years (as have we British) but I think it is a stretch, and more than somewhat unfair, to equate the USA with one of the worst Fascist regimes the world has seen.

There is a huge gulf between 'the greatest country on earth' and ' the most evil empire', and the USA, like most nations, falls somewhere in between - depending upon its stage of socio-political development. And we need to remember that the average American has as much say in what his government does on the international stage as does the average Chinese or Brit. So both 'We are the greatest' and 'the US is a Nazi state' are less than accurate hyperbole.

 

Of course America isn't the source of all evil, only that its evil is being conducted on a much bigger scale than others. Talking of evil reminds me of a prophecy I once read. It said that politicians will be looked on as the lowest scum on earth.

...Well that's Washington for you.
