IMO it was just common courtesy. It spared the ambassador the political problem/s he might have faced back in Iran to be seen in photos with nudes in the background.

It probably also protected the statues from being targeted by jihadists.

 

you can look at this either way. Personally, considering this visit is short and the inconvenience fairly minor compared to the potential affront to the guest, I'd be inclined to be a gracious host if it is practical, but I can see it the other way too. Maybe the Italians pride themselves in being a culture of great hosts as well as great lovers of art.

You know that is not remotely relevant, right? This is about how Italians feel about their sense of duty as hosts to someone outside their cultural tradition and how they feel about their artistic heritage. What your guest might do, does not speak to your values , priorities and why you honor them.

 

Maybe the guy from Iran should try tolerating a deifferent culture than his own.

 

A respect towards the standards and values of others is a reflection of a civilized society. That we have fallen so far from it, does not bode well for us or for others.

Covering up the statues is something known as ----Diplomacy!
