There are also windows phones. They haven't proven very popular in the U.S. (and I'm guessing elsewhere), but the people I know who have had one loved them.

The point was that you could answer your own question using google.

Here's a link about cell phones in Bangladesh.

Google is a search engine, not a browser. Google has a browser, it's called Chrome.

The most common browser in the U.S. is a variety of Internet Explorer, but Safari, Chrome, and Firefox are also pretty popular.

I used Google to research smart phones. Google has their own smartphone brand, the Google Nexus. (I used Google to find that)

    No, they are not.

Google is a search engine. Yahoo is a search engine.

Internet explorer is a browser. Firefox and Chrome are also browsers.
A web browser is a computer program that allows your device to interact with the web.
Search engines are usually web sites (that we access using a web browser).

Firefox is a browser that isn't a search engine.

Yahoo is a search engine that isn't a browser.

Over regulation and lack of competition is the reason our internet is so slow, not capitalism.

Well, it seems to me more like we are struggling to create a solution that includes capitalism.

I highly doubt it would help to allow the construction of multiple wired networks throughout our cities.

We don't do that with electricity or water, for example. These wouldn't be better in any dimension if we allowed multiple corporations to dig up our streets to create multiple competing water or electricity networks.

So, at least here in Seattle we bid out phone and cable network infrastructure (including all sorts of regulation on those monopolies), and then add more regulation to try to allow different providers to compete while also paying those who own the network.

So, what's your more capitalist solution that requires less regulation?

I don't have a better solution, but the problem is not capitalism, but pseudo monopolies due to regulation. If capitalism were involved, prices would be getting lower.

Why assume capitalism will lower prices?

Yes, we do. We also have electricity, running water and houses which aren't made of mud. And the wheel has been invented here. Amazing, right?

If capitalism were involved, phones would be made from conflict minerals, waste money on totally redundant features and constantly release "updates" which change next to nothing.

    Oh wait, that's already happening.

You're the one trying to claim that there are no smart phones outside the US and then when there are they cost $400/month.

    Stop while you're behind

In the US we treat people with frail genes so they live longer and can procreate. Is that good and healthy?
    Can you define good?

How do you prepay and pay that first $1 for your first call? Can you exhaust your services from the beginning of one month to the next? If so, how?
    How do you watch Netflix?

Competition. Capitalism always lowers prices and produces a greater variety of products in the long run. When capitalism fails is when the government interferes with the market with regulations (which are usually written by some of the competitors for their own advantage).

Please define frail genes. Would you say that Stephen Hawking has frail genes, and that we shouldn't have allowed him to survive past age 21 when they found out he had ALS. He has since had three children.

Why would I buy a pair of Tiffany hoops when I could get the exact same thing without the name for a fraction of the cost?

From an article comparing European (GSM) to US American (CDMA) cell phone services: "Since its inception, GSM has evolved faster than CDMA. As I mentioned above, WCDMA is considered the 3G version of GSM technology. To further speed things up, the 3GPP (the GSM governing body) released extensions called HSPA, which have sped GSM networks up to as fast as 42Mbps, at least in theory.

Our CDMA networks, meanwhile, are stuck at 3.6Mbps. While faster CDMA technologies exist, U.S. carriers chose not to install them and have instead turned to 4G LTE to be more compatible with global standards."
    End of quote.

    My comment:

Everything is smart in Europe, even the phones.
