I suspect he purposely describes himself as a democratic socialist to avoid the establishment and 'welfare state' connotations that would come with labeling himself as a social democrat, which seems to be much more in line with his platform.

He's made comments about the distinction in the past, and his definition of democratic socialism reads like a high regulation, high oversight economy coupled with universal taxpayer-funded programs relating to healthcare, education, etc.

He is running as a Democratic nominee because they are more closely aligned with his beliefs than are the Republicans. He has long been an independent and, in my opinion, so far left that he could be called a socialist.

 

Sanders is listed as an independent in the senate along with King from Maine although both caucus with the Democrats. When Sanders ran for re-election he was listed as an independent, not a Democrat.

Since there is no party registration in Vermont, perhaps it is up to him. Then again, why does most of his paper work still refer to him as an independent?

The ignorance of political history around here is a marvel to behold. Yes, Sanders is a democratic socialist in the sense that FDR and LBJ were democratic socialists. FDR stole most of his best ideas from Eugene Debs, who was the first US democratic socialist. But Clinton is correct in one sense. Sanders is not really a Democrat, at least by the current definition of Democrat (exemplified by Obama and the Clintons). These current Democrats (85-90% of the party) are more closely comparable to Nixon and Dole, while Sanders is a holdover from the New Deal.

Both parties have evolved significantly rightward in the past 50 years, to the point that calling anybody a "real" democrat or republican is problematic. There are zero "real" republicans today, if Eisenhower is your standard.

Politics is a little like country music radio. Is Florida Georgia Line or Luke Bryan "real" country? If Hank Williams is your standard, the answer is no.

So really there are no real republicans and democrats anymore. The days when we had guys like Dirksen and Sam Rayburn are gone. The heavyweights are gone and we have the frat boys running the show now.
