We have two numbers: A = 1 B = 0.999999999 .... (and so on ...) ----------------------------------- are These two numbers equal?
Sod off Einstein, are you trying to make us look stupid? I refuse to answer, I don't want to be ridiculed!
If you're a mathematician, yes. If you're the rest of the world and round off after two decimals the yes as well.
numbers are equal ... It is not discussed ... Prove ... ------------------------- Higher mathematics has nothing to do with it .. ======================= It is a challenge for kids 14 years in the Soviet Union ... - - - Updated - - - do not talk, and solve the problem ...
guys, well ... I already knew that the forum do not know the physics ... Now, I understand that you do not know the math…. We look at the conditions of the problem: And now - the decision: B = 0.999999999 .... = 0.3333333333... * 3 = 1 / 3 * 3 = 1 = A ========================================================= This is the basic principle of mathematics ... Go drink a beer .. But you have not earned it ..
Sorry, that isn't a proof, coz who said 1/3 = 0.33333... ? A valid proof: 10B -B = 10*(0.99999...) - 0.99999.. = 9.99999999 - 0.99999999 = 9 but: 10B - B = 9B => 9B = 9 => B = 9/9 = 1 = A So A=B.
in mathematics it may be equal, in the real world, they are not. I am a CNC Machinist, a lot of the parts that I make have tolerances of +/- .0005 or even less. If I were to try and turn in something out of tolerance, I jeopardize the safety of our customers and the reputation of our company. Theoretical mathematics is great in a classroom, doesn't matter much in the real world.
The .99999... Number is a digital approximation In the same way that 3.14 is a digital approximation of pi If you calculate 1/3 by dividing 3 into one.... You and all your children will die Before the calcuation is complete. So .333... Also becomes an approximation when ever you choose to stop your calculations
You know I really hate it when people start using examples of systems of control within programming to define math. AA
Ah, that made me recall a statement from the higher math guys. It was a toast, where glasses were bumped, and the toast was..."here's to higher mathematics...and may it never be of use to anyone!" So clearly the OP needs to keep his ass away from a machine shop? He would be dangerous? LOL. Perhaps this also shows us, that what is theory, whether it be this, or economic theory, is not workable in the real world? Just works out great on paper. This might be a very deleterious disconnect amongst the highly overeducated into village idiocy?
Not to this guy, who started this thread. LOL But its close enough for gov't work. Unless high precision is essential.
You can prove .9999.... Equals 1 by converting it to a fraction. If x = .9999.... Then 10x = 9.9999.... 10x - x = 9x 9.9999.... - .9999.... = 9 9x = 9 x = 1 You convert any repeating decimal to a fraction using the same method. It might seem strange, but remember that you can write any integer an infinite number of ways. .9999.... is just another way or writing 1.
It's what my Father used to call "college educated idiots", all book smarts and no common sense or real world experience.
If you subtract .9999.... from 1 you wouldn't get .0005, .00005, .000005, and so on. You would get an infinite number of 0s. - - - Updated - - - Converting repeating decimals to fractions isn't college level. It's basic algebra.
I was simply pointing out that theoretical mathematics is not useful in the real world of manufacturing and yes I have some tolerances that are extremely tight.
I understand that, what I'm trying to say is that there is no difference between 1 and .9999..... If you subtract them you would get an infinite number of zeroes. The difference between them is 0. Like I said before, it only seems wrong until you remember you can write any integer an infinite number of ways. 1 can be 1/1, 3/3, the square root of 1, 1 squared, etc. .9999.... is just another one of those ways.
As a mathematician I must come to the defense of theoretical math. While some of it is just for the fun of the mathematicians, some of it is also the basis for practical math, physics, and other scienses. Without adavanced theoretical math a lot of the practical science we have today wouldn't exist. And btw 0.99999.. = 1
Guys .. So funny to read your message .. --------------- Question about : A = 0.9999999999999 B = 1, This question has long been closed in mathematics. A = B I gave you proof .. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is the point, there is no "democracy and of forum discussions talkers" ============================= As for the "different numbers", I posted them here: http://www.politicalforum.com/science/461416-new-maths-theories.html post #5 -------------- More write I'm not interested
