Let's get this straight: Poverty is a choice.

Closely linked to the tragedies and the typical parties affiliated with the tragedies is poverty and the overwhelming disproportionate of them who are impoverished. And here's the thing: They CHOSE to be impoverished. We can't really speak in general terms, because we don't know the exact financial statements per say of every minority household in the United States.

But if you choose to commit a crime, a felony in particular. That's on your record. That's the price you paid for committing that crime. If in fact you chose a crappy job with crappy pay, that's the choice you made for your own financial benefit(or deterrent). If you chose not to work, then that's on you. Unless you decided to open a business.

Every choice merits a reaction, that's the basic principle law of how this world works. You have 100% control over all of your choices and your reaction to the situation you're presented with. Those who made the right choices tend to prosper and be happy, those who made the wrong choices end up suffering unintended consequences as a result.

And so, I think we can simplify this whole issue with a proverb: We can lead the horse to water, but we can't make it drink the water. In other words, we can't stop a gangbanger from "hustling", we can't stop someone who wants to commit murder from committing murder. We can't stop people from making bad choices in life.

But we can and should promote the good choices in life, the better alternatives. And that way(and ONLY that way) can we make a real dent in poverty.

Such is the price of freedom. The thing is, outside of committing a felony, none of the consequence for our choices are permanent. Or should I say the choices themselves aren't so. We can always make a different or better choice.

Choice for some, but not all. Never in the history of civilization has poverty been eradicated. I think it's a given.

While I agree that the decisions people make are in large part the determining factor in their success, there are several things you fail to take into consideration.

First, the majority of the population is severely handicapped by a government educational system designed to create mindless drones incapable of critical thinking.

The propaganda machine of the government and their corporate masters do such a complete job of creating obedient subjects who accept authority and consume 150% of what they earn in the practice of their all consuming religion of materialism.

They spend their lives performing as they have been programed to do and impoverish themselves to ensure the 1% live in ease and luxury. Their decisions are truly stupid, when viewed by those who are not blinded by the propaganda, but those who are not blinded are the 1% and would not be living in ease and prosperity without the stupidity of the masses......

Why did you use the word tend? You are arguing that people are poor based on their choices. Thus, poor people made choices that made them poor. This argument is shody at best without using the word tend. Using the word tend, invalidates the whole premise because a person could make all the right choices, but still end up poor. So do you believe that if you make the right choice you will prosper or do you believe that you will be more likely (tend) to prosper?

this is like saying "poor education, poor housing, is a choice"

"having only one parent at home, is a choice"

Of course poverty us a choice. So is homosexuality and having a disease and dying young. It us also a choice to be born short instead of tall, weak instead of strong and non intelligent instead of a Mensa candidate. Everyone strives to be poor. It just a blast.

There are over 16 million Americans with disabilities. Another 20 million with IQs that would barely measure as functioning adults. While I generally agree that
a number of Americans have made poor life choices - there are MILLIONS who really don't have much of a choice.

So I'm going to call BS on this thread.

A percentage of the poor may have brought their financial woes upon themselves but for many, many people it is being born into situations it is virtually impossible to get out of without assistance. I know, I grew up in Appalachia. I got out through the military and a military paid for education. I saw heavy combat and could have been killed many times.

To make a proclamation like yours is the height of ignorance.

What utter nonsense, poverty for many is not a choice - it is the way things are. The bottom 20% of our society have zero chance - they are doomed to a lifetime (shorter than average lifespan) of hardship. We live in a society with democracy as a form of government and capitalism as the foundation of our economic system. Neither are bad or wrong - they just aren't perfect and for the most disadvantaged of our society - they are lacking - except in European nations. I wonder why that is? The consequences of capitalism is there will be winners (few big time) and losers (quite a few) - it's no secret, it's just the way it is. The Pareto Principle kicks in and the rest is history....

You're right. A vote for Trump is a choice for poverty ...

It was there on a giant platter - I had to take it.

I agree that most people in poverty are there because of bad decisions. But some people are poor because they're duds; they have no discernible talent. And some people have devastating medical conditions.

Then there's my story. At one time I lived a comfortable upper-middle class life. Then my wife left me with two young kids. Of course, when the divorce was made final she was given custody (a similar situation to the 1979 movie "Kramer vs. Kramer"). I lost two homes and had to pay 40% of my gross salary to my ex wife for 15 years.

I'm no longer in the upper middle class.

We live in a society that DEMANDS at least 3% unemployment

Anything less than that and businesses freak out.

That means poverty...and the choice is NOT made by those who are affected by it

I would not be poor is the sheriff had appeared on subpoena.

I would be a multi millionaire, AND, the changes that would have come from the information I subpoenaed would have changed the thinking of the people significantly, and many would find new ways of living.

But yes, there is an element of choice too. But. "all or nothing thinking" is not going to work on this subject.
