There are several ways to limit spending and increase revenue (thus reducing the need for taxation) that would both be effective and beneficial, without undermining the lives of the poorest members of society.

Cutting on military spending and ending the war on terror, as well as ending the war on drugs and legalizing the drug trade so that you can benefit from the revenue stream would work wonders.

A nationalized health care system might actually be a good idea too. USA spends more on health than any other country on the planet, 17% of its GPA and about 8,700$ per capita. And that while reaping none of the benefits and having worse health outcomes on the whole. The current system is hellishly expensive, inefficient, and benefits no one but private insurance companies.

That's exactly something you'd expect someone who isn't rich or successful to say…

Why do you believe it isn't true? Having nothing but fallacy is something capitalists do for their bonus.

Indeed, the state which provides basic assistance for all citizens -- including those who can not work and even a few who prefer not to work is one of the greatest social achievements.

Nope. It's an organization founded on violence. It's uncivilized and barbaric.

The state collects taxes to supply citizens who do not work. 90% of them can not work and 10% of them would not work. But they do need shelter, food, medical care and some money for personal expenses.

Taking people's property by force isn't the civilized answer to this issue. It's the primitive and barbaric way, using violence against innocents.

Every state has taxes. Scandinavia has higher taxes then USA, but they have much less poverty and crime.

I am an unabashed "statist" in that I support public schools and libraries and will do so until the day I draw my last breath. Needless to say, the libertarians and ancaps want me dead.

Every society has criminals. Every society has disease. Every society has criminal organizations. Every society has a state.

    So what?

Are these things good because they are ubiquitous?

Are you going to make the argument that taking people's property by force is a civilized practice? Are you going to argue for might makes right?

I have no problems with people starving or limping away from a hospital because they don't have any cash or credit.

I know, I'm a real hard case. The only problem is that I got this way after being a bleeding heart liberal, and watching the wretched refuse of society take full advantage of my generosity.

My way of looking at this is that if YOU want to help pay for a social safety net, then YOU do it with YOUR money.

If you don't want to do that on a voluntary basis, then you're just virtue signalling, and can be safely ignored for not really meaning it.

The vast majority of criminals are people who either do not have sustenance and thus have to earn money illegally or people who have mental disorders and do not receive needed care. Thus in Sweden, murder rate is seven times less then in USA.

You can't compare Northern European culture to the American urban thug culture. One is far superior to the other.

Systems that work in Sweden won't work in south Chicago or Watts.

Name an advanced society with taxes.

See, you have a small problem with the definition of an advanced society. Yours necessitates armed robbery. You might as well ask me to name an advanced society that doesn't engage in public torture and dumps their raw sewage into the street.

Your very definition of advanced requires torture and raw sewage pumped into the streets.

It would certainly give rise to a lot of people named Bob...

However, I see you're not defining "advanced society".

Oh let me be clear. The US and the EU are certainly advanced societies. Perfect? No. But certainly the most advanced societies on the planet. Do you disagree?
