That was the only reason Cruz appeared doing better in polls against Hillary, because no one had taken him to task... That's exactly the same reason why Sanders outperformed Hillary in polls. If your "principled conservative" Cruz was running, he'd be doing way worse than Trump is, all Trump's self-destructive actions notwithstanding. The country just doesn't want a "principled conservative", the country doesn't share their views and their goals.
