Very noble of you, Army Soldier! Latest news 54 minutes ago. Still people being pulled out, more are trapped. A family of four, including two boys aged 8 months and 9 years, were buried when their house in Accumoli imploded. As rescue workers carried away the body of the infant, carefully covered by a small blanket, the childrens grandmother blamed God. He took them all at once, she wailed. Death toll is now 78. I don't have much to give but I think everyone should shell out a few dollars to help in natural disasters.
I think the Italians can handle it. Or the EU can jump in. Lets keep our dollars on our own continent for now... it is not that big of a disaster. Have you donated some to the Louisiana flood victims yet? My Grand parents came from Piedilama about 70 miles east of Rome! Visited there as a kid in the late 50's. The old church destroyed by previous earthquakes: Me standing on the altar
I don't think they have that many earthquakes in central Italy, and it's probably why the houses collapsed. The newer homes are reinforced. The one thing that worry's me is Naples with the volcano looming above them. I know the Ionian Sea has been rocking and they are expecting a big one to hit the islands of Cephalonia and Zakinthos. They are very unstable. Seems the whole world is letting loose. ..but the worse will be North America. According to some accounts, if a major earthquake occurs somewhere like the Cascades, it will set off a chain reaction throughout the continent.
The 2009 earthquake also hit around Piedilama---Im guessing the big one on January 13th, 1915 in central Italy took down the old church Here is a list of major earthquakes in Italy in the past century: - January 13th, 1915: Some 32,600 are killed when an earthquake measuring 7.0 struck Avezzano in central Italy. - July 27th, 1930: A quake measuring 6.5 strikes the region of Irpinia in southern Italy, killing around 1,400 people. - May 6th, 1976: An earthquake measuring 6.5 rocks Friuli in Italy’s northeastern corner, killing 976 people and leaving 70,000 others homeless. - November 23rd, 1980: Some 2,735 people are killed and more than 7,500 injured in an earthquake measuring 6.5. The epicentre was at Eboli but damage was reported over a huge area towards Naples. - December 13th, 1990: Earthquake centred in the sea off Sicily kills 13 people and injures 200. - September 26th, 1997: Two earthquakes measuring 6.4 kill 11 people and cause serious damage to the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, damaging priceless Medieval frescoes. - July 17th, 2001: Earthquake measuring 5.2 shakes the northern Italian region of Alto Adige, killing one woman. - October 31st, 2002: An earthquake measuring 5.9 hits Campobasso, south-central Italy, killing 30 people, most of them children, in San Giuliano di Puglia. - April 6th, 2009: A powerful earthquake strikes the Abruzzo area east of Rome. It kills more than 300 people and devastates the 13th century city of L’Aquila. - May 29th, 2012: More than 16 people are killed and 350 injured in the second big earthquake to hit the area around Modena in northern Italy. An earlier quake nine days earlier killed nearly 10 people. http://www.irishtimes.com/news/world/europe/italy-earthquake-timeline-of-major-quakes-in-italy-over-past-century-1.2766576
Thanks to all, Italians appreciate when friends are near in similar moments. We react to these tragedies as a People, with the capital "P" and like in other occasions, we will deal with this. Now the victims are more than 120 and considering the conditions of some villages [which are reduced to masses of ruins] it's probable that other cadavers will be found by the firefighters. The earthquake has hit in the dark hours and probably the recall which will remind in the eyes of the Italians is the face of a common mayor of a little village interviewed by TV journalists. There are moments in which I do hate TV journalists. This said, I want to spend some words to thank President Obama. A great person [beyond political competition and ideological differences]. Thank you Mr. President.
