    Delicate subject, I know,

but having many internationals around I do sometimes wonder of our own dress-code, and manners - and I am not talking blokes. We all know that we can be a bit rough around the edges, but our girls/ladies as well? At times I found it bad in the UK (sorry, no offence meant), but are we as bad? Are our standards dropping?

    http://www.msn.com/en-au/news/austr...-and-ladylike-behaviour/ar-AAjX90N?li=AAgfYrC

What is your opinion on this one?
    Regards

Rejoice in it cats, you don't need to agree, you don't need to practice it, and you really shouldn't be offended by it. Our eclecticism and freedoms, well except to marry who we want, and those that are morally unacceptable are to be celebrated, many gave their lives for them.

Spend an hour having coffee on the sidewalk of King Street Newtown and you will see a good selection. I do quite regularly although some would say I am more spectacle than spectator. :roflol:

    Yeap,
you might be right. Shouldn't worry too much those days, might turn into a grumpy old man.....

    Na,
we had some festivities going on not too long ago, as always some had too many (drinks), and off they went (manners). Feel a bit sorry especially for the girls, with us blokes we tend to accept it more, though we shouldn't, really.
    Cheers mate

Manners and respect for others is a totally different thing, I thought you meant dress and tatts etc

This tends to be what happens when lots of young people get together and binge drink. Mostly harmless, if somewhat embarrassing. What I object to more is that people film this stuff and put it online.

That kind of behaviour is more tolerated for men, just lads being lads, etc. But it still looks bad.

As for women's fashion, could not care less. I've always found that women are much more critical and judgmental about what other women (and men) wear than men are. In general I find "fashion" a bit ridiculous.

Not sure if Australia is sexist, but the woman in that pic is attracting comment because she's dressed like the man-pleasing suburban bogan that horse racing seems to attract. I could care less about her riding a wheelie bin, or being drunk, or even being obese (though that last doesn't help her cause). Those things are utterly irrelevant compared to her 'presentation' and what lies behind it.

I have a friend about the same size, and she's an old school goth (mellowed but still goth). She looks roughly a hundred times better than the woman in the pic, even drunk and riding wheelie bins. She also has hairy armpits and legs, and doesn't give a (*)(*)(*)(*) what infantile men think of that. The fatso in the pic has slapped herself up like that for infantile men, I guarantee it. THAT'S what makes her ugly, not the parts of the whole.

No, it isn't. There are plenty of young people who drink in groups and don't suddenly turn into trashy bogans.

One of my neighbours has regular parties at which their three late teen/early 20's kids carouse with drink and friends. The peak of these nights is usually expressed by long political and/or philosophical discussions in the back yard at 3am. Sometimes acoustic guitars are involved.

I'm talking about large events with a cross section of people, not a small gathering of privileged hipsters.

Have no idea why people get so offended by this kind of thing, or by what people wear.

Crank is even trying to psychoanalyse this girl based on her outfit, ffs.

Trashy bogans, I like that one.
However exactly this is part of our culture, far too often, and far too often excused.....

I think you’re making the all too common error of assuming this kind of behaviour is something new and that is didn’t happen in the past just because there wasn’t the scale of mass communications available to propagate it. If anything, what has changed is our honesty about who we actually are, if only because we’re forced to confront it due to pictures like this one.

I agree 100%. She screams "HARLOT". This is the same individual that obviously has no respect for herself or anyone else, but would demand everyone else respect her.

Appearance is not for others, it is for yourself. It should not matter what other people think so long as your 'decent', meaning not giving minors an education in anatomy beyond what can be seen a public beach. Straddling decency is the point of the Melbourne Cup.... its an adult event, so if she is having a good time and not hurting anyone the only ugliness here is the people calling her ugly.

do you mean large events full of binge drinking bogans? most young people I know (and I know ALOT, from most strata of society and various cultural backgrounds) wouldn't go anywhere near such a thing. trashy bogans are the odd ones out, it seems.

no one is 'offended', we're pointing and laughing.

how could I not psychoanalyse her? she's shrieking her creed for all to 'see'.

It's a small part of the culture. Move half a step to your left or right, preferably in the direction of a sizeable Asian community or similar, and it will be unknown. Ditto areas like mine, where the hipsters and hippies loiter.

Yes, something along the lines of harlot would be about right. But I'm not even convinced that there's a sexual element to this for her. I see it more as a product of very limited exposure to alternative cultures, limited education, and very poor self-worth (exhibited by her strict adherence to the LCD suburban standard for 'groomed and dressed up').

If I had my way, I'd cut that damned 1990's newsreader hair, put her in 14-Up black Docs, a knee length floral dress buttoned up to the neck (vintage, preferably), and no makeup. Would she loose all her 'confidence' and have a terrible time at the races? Or would she be so intriguing and appear so confident that she'd have made the press for different reasons?

Any large event. Yes even hipsters make fools of themselves. I am a young person, really doesn't matter how "classy" a person thinks they are when they've had far too much too drink, anything's possible.

I haven't pressed "play" on that girl's video, because it's bs. People shouldn't judge others for such ridiculous harmless drunken bs.

I have very little respect for anyone who calls anyone else "trashy", or uses any such other classist nonsense.

Only dickheads psychoanalyse someone they've never met based on some short film clip.

An ironically distasteful comment in the context of a thread about the qualities of modern society.

I agree, I was a little taken back by it myself. Oh and it is ironic. Ironic/Irony is one of the most misused words in the English language. This children is the correct use. Irony has to be deliberate, Crank deliberately said it although he may not have realised it. My lecturer in Human Neuroanatomy died from a brain tumor. He also had a facial nerve damage from birth that paralyzed one side of his face.

A fellow student said to me. "Isnt it ironic that the professor died of a brain tumor?", I said no, it was a sad coincidence, not ironic, I don't think he meant to die.

I don't care what you wear. But what you wear undeniably is an indicator of the sort of person you are, and I would prefer if people weren't lazy, ignorant, or naive. So have more respect for yourselves.

But do I support any sort of legal action? No.

Aussie women are ladylike as long as they are young and thin and some girls are incredibly pretty, who are too good for the country. I think this woman has a weight issue, which may have badly affected her personal character. If you look like her, you cannot be treated like a lady, thus making her a social outcast who cannot behave in public places.

Agree. The school girl hair cut, and Target frock, looked trashy for that social occasion.

I would wager her intellectual abilities are limited to texting; sex, and binge drinking.

Far too many people blame lack of education and other inanimate circumstances for their own irrational behaviour. Its time individuals took responsibility and accountability for their own situations, instead of always trying to use the victim mentality card to excuse their own laziness and failings.

If an individual knows they have a tendency to behave irrationally; immature and stupid when they drink to much alcohol. Then personally be aware of your situation and limit your consumption of alcohol. It is not expecting to much for adult individuals to take responsibility for themselves and their actions.

It's 'distasteful' to mention the rise in obesity?

Please accept my apologies. And proceed with enabling fatsos, if it gives you a warm glow. I prefer to call obesity what it is - in the interests of saving lives, rather than 'feelings'.

you never said obese. you said fat, there is a difference, if you don't know that then the argument is mute
