Nov 18, 2016 | President-elect Donald Trump made it official Friday by naming his top military advisor, retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, to become the next White House National Security Advisor.

Flynn, 57, of Middletown, Rhode Island, a career intelligence officer and registered Democrat with 33 years of service, will succeed Obama administration National Security Advisor Susan Rice in the post that will make him the filter for Trump of the advice and views coming from the Defense and State Departments, and the intelligence agencies. In a statement, Trump said "I am pleased that Lieutenant General Michael Flynn will be by my side as we work to defeat radical Islamic terrorism, navigate geopolitical challenges and keep Americans safe at home and abroad. General Flynn is one of the country's foremost experts on military and intelligence matters and he will be an invaluable asset to me and my administration."

Flynn, the former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, said "I am deeply humbled and honored to accept the position as National Security Advisor to serve both our country and our nation's next President, Donald J. Trump." Flynn, often described by former military colleagues as a "fiery" and innovative officer with hardline views on "radical Islam," stirred controversy during the campaign with his harsh criticism of President Obama and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. In his speech at the Republican National Convention, Flynn led chants of "lock her up" and charged that the U.S. had lost its will to win under President Obama in the war against the Islamic State.

Democrats excoriated Flynn as a "loose cannon" but at least one Democrat, fellow Rhode Islander Sen. Jack Reed, had mixed praise for Flynn and even got ahead of the Trump team in announcing the appointment. Reed's office put out a premature release Thursday saying Trump had named Flynn and then quickly withdrew it. However, a spokesman for Reed, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the senator's statement would apply once the appointment became official.

In the statement, Reed, a West Point graduate who earned the Ranger tab, said of Flynn that "I respect him and deeply admire his family's legacy of military service. It is pretty remarkable to have two brothers rise to the rank of general like Mike and Charlie Flynn." Maj. Gen. Charles Flynn is commander of the Army's 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii, a key unit in the Army's contribution to the Obama administration's rebalance of forces to the Pacific.

Torture works but it has to be the right kind of torture specific to the person being tortured. No method will work on everyone but the specific right method will be effective on everyone.

Donald "believe me folks torture works" Trump has offered a job, national security adviser to Michael Flynn, one who shares his views on so many levels.

If you recall Flynn was the fellow who took some heat by making a paid appearance on RT News, the Russian state news agency, prior to spending the evening with Putin. He also has refused to rule out torture, is vehemently anti Islamic, has attacked the president for killing Bin Laden instead of using him as a propaganda tool.

Qualifications aside, the man seems to be a bit on the controversial side. He also seems to think, in my opinion, laws don't matter when it comes to hurting non Christians and can not distinguish between a terrorist and a person of a certain religion.

Quite a collection of characters Trump is assembling.

President-elect Donald Trump has offered retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn the role of national security advisor, a transition official told CNN Thursday.

It was not immediately clear if Flynn accepted.

Flynn, 57, was a top adviser and high-profile surrogate to Trump during his campaign, introducing the President-elect at rallies and serving as a top cheerleader on his hyper-active Twitter feed.

His potential appointment wouldn't require Senate confirmation, which is potentially helpful for Trump, as Flynn has a long history of controversial remarks and was fired as President Barack Obama's director of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014.

Flynn wrote in his 2016 book, "The Field of Fight," that he was booted from Obama's administration by "censors" who were unhappy he'd told a congressional committee "that we were not as safe as we had been a few years back."

However, US officials said Flynn was pushed out because of his contentious management style.

Flynn's Twitter feed -- regularly updated with pro-Trump comments -- is another source of potential scrutiny. Flynn apologized in July after retweeting a message that bashed Jewish people.

The retweet came after Hillary Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook said on CNN that Russia was to blame for hacks of the Democratic National Committee.

"The corrupt Democratic machine will do and say anything to get #NeverHillary into power. This is a new low," Flynn tweeted. With it, he shared a link to a tweet by a user who had written, ">Cnn implicated. 'The USSR is to blame!' ... Not anymore, Jews. Not anymore."

Flynn later apologized, saying he'd only meant to retweet Mook's remarks.

A critical role

First created in the early days of the Cold War, the job of national security advisor is seen as critical to implementing a president's worldview on the various departments and agencies involved in national security. Famous national security advisers who made a major impact on American foreign policy have included Henry Kissinger, Zbigniew Brzezinski and Brent Scowcroft. Susan Rice is the current national security advisor.

Flynn enjoys tremendous access and credibility with Trump, especially because he's had several tours of duty on the battlefield.

"What makes Gen. Flynn different from so many others that we've heard about on Donald Trump's transition team is he is the one with the real experience fighting on the ground in Afghanistan and Iraq," said Peter Bergen, CNN's national security analyst.

"Certainly, he would be a very plausible candidate for national security advisor, which is arguably the most important national security position in the government," Bergen added.

But the question may be whether his management style rubs people the wrong way.

Given Trump's reputation for loyalty, it is no surprise that Flynn would find himself in a key role in the Trump administration.

But Flynn, having only retired from the Army in 2014, is actually limited in the positions he could fill. By law, military officers must be out of uniform for at least seven years before they are eligible to become secretary of defense, though it is possible that Congress could grant a waiver that would allow Flynn to be named to that post.

Even before it was announced, the idea of Flynn becoming national security advisor was met with opposition from some Democrats.

Rep. Adam Schiff, the ranking member on the House Select Committee on Intelligence, told CNN's Wolf Blitzer Wednesday, "I'd be worried about an impulsive president with an impulsive national security advisor."

Handling of classified information

At the Republican National Convention, amid shouts of "lock her up" from the audience, Flynn delivered a fiery speech condemning Clinton's handling of emails on her private server.

"I have called on Hillary Clinton to drop out of the race because she put our nation's security at extremely high risk with her careless use of a private email server," Flynn said.

But Flynn's own record with classified information has been called into question during his military career. On at least two occasions, his handling of classified information came under scrutiny by the US military.

Two former government officials with direct knowledge of the issue tell CNN that while Flynn oversaw intelligence in Afghanistan, he shared classified information with Pakistan on terror networks responsible for killing American troops. The intelligence, the sources say, came from another agency. Flynn wasn't supposed to share it. They say he was trying to convince Pakistan to stop sheltering terrorists.

Asked by email about the allegation, Flynn told CNN, "It is not true ... not even close." Flynn declined to comment further.

In separate incident, the two officials with whom CNN spoke said Flynn did not follow established security procedures when he shared classified intelligence with allies.

In an August interview with The Washington Post, Flynn has acknowledged the incident.

"The investigation on me was for sharing intelligence with the Brits and Australians in combat, and I'm proud of that one," he told the paper. "That was substantiated because I actually did it."

Flynn says he had permission to share the classified information. In both cases, sources say the retired general was informally reprimanded but never charged with wrongdoing.

And in 2010, while still a serving senior officer, he published an article criticizing the state of US intelligence operations in Afghanistan. The role of national security adviser has varied by administration, but usually centers on coordinating the policy positions of the secretaries of state, defense, justice and other members of a president's national security team. It is an especially powerful position because of the national security adviser's access to the president in the West Wing of the White House. The adviser acts as a gatekeeper on a wide range of issues, including matters of war and peace as well as diplomacy and intelligence.

Flynn, who turns 58 in December, served for more than three decades in the Army following his commissioning in 1981 as a second lieutenant in military intelligence. His career included a stint as director of intelligence for the Joint Chiefs of Staff and intelligence chief for the U.S.-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. It ended, however, when he was forced to resign from his post as head of the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014 after two turbulent years leading the Pentagon's top spy agency.

Islam is a political ideology, Flynn told the audience in Dallas, in the context of talking about the spate of Islamic terror attacks over the summer that included those in Orlando, Fla., in the French city of Nice, in Baghdad, in Bangladesh, at the Istanbul airport in Turkey, on a train in Germany, and elsewhere. Indeed. It's deplorable that Flynn had the stones to call it as it was RE: ISIS, & was fired by Obama for it. It was deplorable he stood upon his principals.

November 19, 2016 | WASHINGTON The heads of the Pentagon and the U.S. intelligence community have recommended to President Barack Obama that the director of the National Security Agency, Admiral Michael Rogers, be removed from his position, sources familiar with the matter said on Saturday.

The recommendation by Defense Secretary Ash Carter and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, first reported by The Washington Post, was delivered to the White House last month.

Security lapses

Obama chose Rogers to take over at the NSA in 2014 and tasked him with repairing the damage after the huge leaks about its electronic spying program by contractor Edward Snowden. But there have been other security lapses, the sources said, including the one that led to the arrest of NSA contractor Harold Martin earlier this year. Rogers is being considered as a potential new director of national intelligence by President-elect Donald Trump. That post oversees all 17 U.S. intelligence agencies.

Carter was also disappointed with the Cyber Command's performance in the war against Islamic State, another source said. Two jobs, too much

The Obama administration wants to split leadership at the National Security Agency and Cyber Command, arguing that the job of leading two agencies with differing missions is too much for one person. But some members of Congress, led by Republican Senator John McCain, the Senate Armed Services Committee chairman, oppose that plan, saying that Cyber Command needs access to the NSA's resources to do its job effectively.

Like in movie 1984?

I thought they got little and mostly bad information from our black sites we used that caused us to burn those tapes in 05'. And in my opinion; torture always works to a degree, its the information that important. With proper torture people will admit and say anything even if its not true. Better to coerce or convert really.
