Well, one of the kids is in his second year of hopefully a biomedical engineering degree in his quest to be a doctor. The others have also done OK.
So if you meant, do I believe in science, well, the answer is yes.
I take it you don't have kids, and maybe, on occasion, you are prone to jumping to premature conclusions. Thanks for posting.

It depends on the applicants if they determine wages or not. As well as the job. When you hire the lad to cut your lawn, who is in charge of his wages?

My commentary is that if you are in charge, will you please pay him $15 per hr to harmonize with your concepts.

It depends too on an economy fitting the worker. At one time in my sons life, to give you an example, he could be home and get phone calls making him very great offers to get him to work for a company that wanted him. And he was a worker, not a manager.

I am sorry I violated Federal law by discussing this matter. Do not get them to toss me in prison.

We on SS are paid even less than your minimum. So the Feds need to practice what they preach.

When the Federal Reserve acts, it is not artificial. Bad or good, it is not artificial.

But it did help by paying what they're worth.

When it comes to education the problem hasn't been spending the money but instead on not spending the money wisely. Having gone to college to understand education there are some keys. First of all we need to reduce the classroom sizes to about 1/2 what they currently average. From what I've read the average class size in about 22 students while for optimal learning the size should be a minimum of 8 (less isn't cost effective) to a maximum of 12 (the teacher can't maintain a "one-on-one" learning relationship with more than 12 students). There are ways to do this without doubling the number of teachers. The one-on-one relationship addresses proficiency for all of the students as opposed to our current practices that by necessity driven by class size only addresses growth that only focuses on the "median" student in the class where over-achievers are bored and under-achievers are left behind.

Ideally we can reduce class sizes without a significant increase in the number of teachers with more computer based learning with multiple paths for learning are provided for learning the same material. A half-day in the computer lab and a half day with the teacher to explore whatever the student might have problems with from the computer training,

Next is to change to standardized class lesson plans created by course developers as opposed to the teachers being responsible for both course delivery and course development) to ensure the proper methodology is employed by the teachers. We need to standardize what's to be taught and eliminate the influence of parents and communities that all too often want to use schools for brainwashing the children to believe what the parents believe. Education should be about learning the truth regardless of what subject is being addressed. The current amount of misinformation being taught in our schools from history to science driven by local politics is extensive. This is typically worse in private schools because the parent is the customer. Education is supposed to be about the child, not the parent, and we need to get the parental influence out of education.

Finally focus on competency based learning as opposed to our existing practices. Competency based learning eliminates the different "grades" in schools and replaces them with milestones of learning based upon achievement. When the student demonstrates proficiency in the subject they move ahead to the next level. They advance at their own pace and don't have to retake a complete course caused by students being "left behind' in our current education practices.

While teaching isn't the subject of the thread this merely reflects how quality management can be employed to address situations where superior outcomes are desired. Education is certainly one of those areas where we need a significant improvement.

But if the folks left to hire are competent then what good will wanting them to be do?

the value of money as you said also makes the disparity between the few rich and the many poor more severe, the money changers in wall street devalued our currency to where waiting ten years to earn 35,000 to 40,000 a year in salary doesn't mean the same thing as it once did in the past.

Better than other chains. Doesn't matter though. Those trying to climb the ladder or just working over the summer, its quite a different experience from walking into Burger King, Pollo Tropical or Subway, ect.

Not only kids but grandkids. Recently I sat and listened to one go into great detail about how global warming was destroying the planet and then in a following conversation on American history I mentioned Custer and he looked at me with a look of confusion, "who's that?". Apparently schools are immersing kids in political agendas and ignoring American history.

All good points. My only point was increasing wages does not automatically result in higher quality workers.

The minimum wage used to be based on food, which was the largest expenditure a family of four had in the 1920s when this concept was instituted. Now, in the modern era, the highest cost for families is housing, which is why $7.25 is a below poverty wage.

I grew up not too far from New Rumley. I remember in the 70's or early 80's when AIM showed up at the statue. That kinda worked up the residents a bit. :)
My experience with public education has been positive, regardless of how American history is taught. I tend to rank science higher than I would rank the life & death of Gen. George Armstrong Custer. But that's just me.

Ignoring American history while pushing politicized pseudo science is a huge mistake in education and makes it in reality indoctrination.

Unquestionably true and there's an irony to it. While many believe otherwise under the law and the US Constitution we're still on the "gold standard" but the laws aren't being enforced and, unfortunately, there's only one "person" that could force the issue by being able to demand redemption Federal Reserve notes in gold and/or silver coins at face (domination) value from the US Treasury or Federal Reserve.

The reason they can force redemption of Federal Reserve notes in gold and/or silver coinage is based upon this clause in Article I Section 10 that states, "No State shall,,,,,,,, make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts."

Any state Treasurer can go to the Federal Reserve or the US Treasury and demand redemption of their tax revenue that's paid in Federal Reserve notes and demand redemption in American Eagle gold and silver coinage so that the state can pay it's debts in gold and silver coins so that the state can comply with this provision. The Supreme Court would have to support the State's demand but it could only happen once because of the amount of gold and silver required to cover the debt. Congress would be forced to revalue the gold and silver coinage like it last did in 1985.

That was the point of the OP. Management is responsible for ensuring the performance of the workers and not the workers themselves.. The workers do what they're taught and directed to do by management and the management is responsible for the training and directions to the workers to improve the performance of the workers.

The problem is with the management, not the worker, when it comes to the worker's performance generating the revenue necessary to fund the increased compensation.

This is a fundamental failure of reasoning by those that oppose a higher minimum "cost of living" wage. They claim that the worker isn't worth the additional compensation when managerial incompetence is the underlying reason why the enterprise isn't generating the revenue necessary to fund the higher compensation. The workers have the ability to provide the performance but the management/owner fails to provide the job specific training and to provide the direction necessary to generate the revenue to fund the compensation. In many cases training isn't even involved because it can be intuitive and it simply comes down to a lack of proper direction by the management/owner of the enterprise.

In a real sense imposing a higher minimum wage based upon the cost of living forces the management to do it's job by providing the direction, and if required the training, necessary to fund the minimum wage. Either the management will step up to the task or the business will fail and that is exclusively the responsibility of the management.

Let's pretend for a moment that I'm one of those "few" CEOs...
Some new tax law is passed, meaning that my company gets an additional million $ per year, what do you think happens to it?
My company already has employees sufficient to deal with consumer demand, and I don't hire people just to sit around - I only hire folks when there is more work to be done...
I record that extra $1million as profits, shareholders are happy and I walk away with a raise and/or bonus as recognition for "leading the company through challenging times".
What jobs were created? Who, other than folks who are already wealthy, saw their wealth increase?

Maybe that tax law actually applies to the CEO directly, enabling him/me to take home an extra million$ this year...
Maybe I spend it on an international vacation, or put it into an off-shore account (meaning the money leaves the US market).
Maybe I buy two new cars for $500K each. That made 1 or 2 salesmen very happy. Of course, since I only drive one car at a time, filling up 1 tank of gas a week and getting 1 car serviced periodically doesn't really add up to much additional work in the local market...

Now, imagine if that $1million was actually divided among 1000 people living near or below the poverty line. 1000 people who didn't already have cars suddenly have the ability to buy a secondhand car and drive to jobs, 1000 people getting gas every week, getting cars serviced... That creates jobs.
Even if they didn't buy cars, they spend the money in the local market which creates transactional growth for local businesses. Transactional growth is the ONLY thing that motivates businesses to hire additional workers, so more jobs are created.

Your assumption that this has anything to do with emotion is a fallacy.

Higher minimum wages WILL guarantee more automation, however. I can't think of the last time I actually paid a parking attendant, for example.

    Hi,

I really like the idea of a Basic income for everyone. My idea is that it would be just a little bit more for you than to not to starve of freeze to death. So it should be around 300$ but differ from from state to state and country ro country. It would surely be able to reduce burocracy cost, and especilly people with a low income job would profit. It would be very likely better than the german system where people without work get so called Arbeitslosengeld 2 (unemployment benefit 2) which everyone can get who is without work and bigger amounts of wealth. Some people already get this or the former version already for decades. In the moment its 409 Euro for a single adult (432,61 US Dollars) and theyget paid a flat up to a certain price or size and also the heating. That pretty much sums up to more then 800$. But still many people and politicians say its not enough. And if you have a low income job and/or a larger family you still can get money from the state, but you will only earn a bit more than the workless people sitting home doing nothing all day.

This can also very easily happen if you work full time and have family, not only in single-parent households but also when one parent only works part time.
