I was just watching a panel of Trump supporters questioned about their support, on CNN. When asked about Russia: "Why can't we just move beyond the Russia thing", "I don't see Russia tapping my phones".

When asked about Flynn lying about his meeting with the Russian ambassador: "Do you remember what you ate for lunch last Tuesday?"

The rest of their responses were similar.

Basically, they love Trump and they don't care about anything else. This truly is a cult. They will even rationalize away cold-blooded murder.

As far as I'm concerned, Trumps refusal to denounce Putin even for murdering a journalist, is enough to deem him the enemy. I listen to these people and all I can think is, Where did this country fail so miserably to produce such heartless people? Trump is right! He could shoot someone in cold blood and his supporters wouldn't care.

Yep...Trump is the symptom of a much larger issue of illness in our country. It's almost too easy to just say it's a lack of education. It's something else. I just can't put my finger on it.

It's more than a cult. There are a few posters here who pretty much admit they would work with Russians to destroy Democrats.

    These people are beyond redemption.

Why would Trump voters be Putin loyalists?

Americans who work with Russia aren't necessarily putin loyalists. That's why we say work "with" not work "for".

That's where you're wrong. We actually have the best interests of Russia before America in our minds.

No different than most panels chosen for their support for someone; especially if chosen by a media outlet that holds opposing views, and for whom the dumber the panel looks the better for them and their agenda.

Fact is, most americans are seriously derelict in their civic duties, especially the "informed citizen" part, and therefore a randomly chosen panel of Obama supporters or Sanders supporters or Hillary supporters will sound just as stupid, blind and unthinking as Trump supporters will, except to other similarly ignorant supporters of that particular person.

The reason that most presidential elections are won or lost on the margins is because most democrats are lemmings who will rationalize a way to support whoever has the D in front of their name on the ballot, regardless of how bad a candidate he/she is; and ditto for republicans. That leaves a small segment of (relatively) independent thinkers with the power to decide elections.

The Republican's couldn't get move beyond Hillary's server or Benghazi even though after months of investigations there were no charges.

Trump is going to be hounded by Russians helping him win the elections.......... Forever !!

Problem is we are dealing with confirmation and cognitive bias

Sometimes the very act of arguing with people deep in these biases consolidates thier belief systems by validating it (Oh! I must be right because snowflake libruls is not liking it!!)

Here is an excellent summary of some of the psychological drivers to this mindset

The Russian flag will fly high at the White House before Trump's 8 year term is up.

Trouble with a voluntary voting system is that only those with passion to actually vote will. The vast majority of undecided or 'swinging" voters stay home rather than face a decision that is difficult - and I think you saw that in your last election.

One of the things that makes Australia a very different political landscape is our mandatory voting system - means we have a LOT of "swinging' voters who are not committed to a party or an ideology and will vote on what they perceive the person running for the seat has done

    Makes the Pollies nervous

Not to mention the US still maintains its election day to be in the middle of the work week, and the GOP still keeps wanting to suppress voter turn out through intimidation and redistricting.

The deep division of politics Driving a deep cognitive or world view bias. Seen less on the left than the right - although that might be my cognitive bias.

How many Trump supporters spend thier days posting again and again a version of "libruls is .........." and "you only believe that because you are a liberal".

It shows up more distinctly in the memes and cartoons

Usually the thinking behind this is very questionable and often not even logical. One meme posted the other day said "Trump frightens stupid people" to which I replied 'He also scares the crap out of intelligent people

It has been posited though, that memes like the one above, posted on social media, had a disproportionate effect on voters in the USA

An absolutely brilliant analysis. Anyone seeking proof of this statement can look the 2016 Presidential election. It amazes me how both major parties could nominate such imbecilic candidates while quality candidates sit on the sidelines.

We haven't had a qualified President in 25 years. Is there some kind of conspiracy to keep the President of the United States stupid and inexperienced? I am beginning to think so.

That's a fairly good way of looking at it. Russians are not a problem because they're basically in Russia. Democrats, on the other hand, are a much more tangible and visible threat.

Yes that is puzzling - we always vote on a Saturday but that is more because the schools are where we mostly vote - they usually put on a "sausage sizzle" so they make money on the day. Bit of a win/win. :p There is another side effect of mandatory voting which I did not realise until recently. They HAVE to make the voting cards simple. We get two bits of paper to fill in with large writing and tick boxes - that it is IT. Also we do not have to vote for the local dog catcher and since we do preferential voting we do not have to do the multiple rounds of candidate selection you do. Imagine if you had a preferential system for president. EVERYONE gets to put thier name on the ballot - although you might want to filter to the top ten - and then you get a far wider choice. Would have changed the outcome of your last election

The republicans control all three branches of your government so they can't be a cult. They are mainstream. Are you sure it isn't the party that's been kicked out of power that's the cult?

I am amazed that you allow your President to pick his cabinet AFTER the election. I am no political statistician but from what I have seen a better way may be to have candidates choose or nominate a cabinet and then, nominate to run. You vote using preferential voting and the group with the most votes wins
