Yeah, I'm not really talking about school/university libraries. I'm talking more about your local town library. Where I live, the towns are relatively small, and there are local libraries in every one of them. A few of these towns are pretty affluent, and the local libraries are pretty empty much of the time. I don't think we need as many as we have right now for one thing. There was a time when students and others depended on the library for books and to do research and gather information, but that is changing with progress and technology. Always sad to see some of your favorite institutions or things become obsolete and disappear though. I like reading physical books myself. I like turning pages. I like how books smell too.

Getting riled up over a discussion on the future of libraries would actually be reasonable. This is much worse than that; people are just pretending to be mad because their candidate did not win the lottery.

Ivanka just wrote one of those pointless messages that all public figures feel they have to write during made up days such as international women's day, policemen's day, baker's day and what-have-you. I doubt Ivanka gives a flying horse about "librarians day" and I doubt any librarian actually gives a damn about her gratulations. :p

To put things more in perspective, Libraries are Dinosaurs sinking into the tar pits of the easily accessible from anywhere internet. it's time to stop wasting money on them.

And where will the poor access the Internet? Many people who don't own a computer do so at libraries.

And where will people get expert assistance when trying to research a topic or find information? Librarians do that.

And where will people find access to specialized information that often hides behind paywalls, or doesn't yet exist online? Libraries often have that access and those subscriptions.

Claiming libraries are outdated is enormously ignorant.

The poor are seldom in libraries, except to escape the weather. Another madeup non-crisis from the wet diaper left.

Love our local county library system. We pay for it , here.

For years, Grok, I have wondered if you actually believed the stuff you wrote, or were just a troll whose shtick is saying ignorant things.

Thank you for finally demonstrating you are simply a troll.

Nice personal attack. Clueless as ever, I see.

Wise of you to avoid addressing the point(s) I made. Most poor Americans live in URBAN AREAS. Is there a large urban area without a library?

Fed money not needed at libraries.

Um, what you wrote was this:

The poor are seldom in libraries, except to escape the weather. Another madeup non-crisis from the wet diaper left.

Thus hand-waving away any need to provide affordable access to books and research materials.

That's not an argument; it's pure slander and trolling.

You are not worth paying attention to, even for amusement.

Isn't it astounding that the right wing consistently, I mean like clockwork, have such blatant tunnel vision?

The Institute of Museum and Library sciences didn't even exist until 1996. Truly amazing.

Oh, please, we had a first hand look at just how efficient the federal government is when they dazzled us all with the launch of healthcare.gov. How about the VA, really top notch efficiency there, too. You want to think there's accountable in DC, fine, I'm a little more mature than that, ray.

Paul Ryan's house budget in 2014 proposed eliminating funding for IMLS, saying it was not a proper federal function.

Didn't read thread. Nonstory. Libraries should be funded locally, not centrally in gov-edu-union-contractor-grantee-trial lawyer-MSM Complex grafty honeypots. Drain the Swamp!

Hey, look, you pointed to specific examples of inefficiency!

.... and from that you conclude that there is always waste and inefficiency. Oh well.

There were certainly issues with the way building the healthcare.gov site was managed:
    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...re-gov-botched-600-million-worth-of-contracts

But how do we know about that? Because of accountability! In the form of oversight and audits. Not to mention the media.

So stop claiming the federal government isn't accountable.

And lets cut the government a little slack on this one, shall we? What they were trying to do -- build a site that integrated constantly-updated data from hundreds of different places and companies, combined it with personal data on millions of people, figured out estimated subsidies, presented the plans in a comparable way, and do it all while protecting a **** ton of sensitive information -- was not easy.

Many of the issues revolved around inexperience -- the agency tasked with building the site had never managed a project of this magnitude before -- and staff turnover. You can argue they should have prepared better, but when you're doing something that has never been done before, there isn't always an applicable manual. And quite often there are time pressures that make it difficult to fully prepare.

All in all, pointing to what was a massive one-off project of great complexity is probably not the best poster child for day-to-day government waste. It would be like pointing to the moon missions and complaining about all the failed rocket tests.

Paul Ryan also dreams about getting rid of Medicaid, screwing over millions of poor people. Maybe not the best guy to bring up.

Her tweet is supportive of librarians and public libraries. Trump proposes a budget that slashes their funding. Those two positions are pretty inconsistent.

    Which side are you on?

If your city or town wants a library then fund it yourself, it is NOT a federal responsibility.
