It's a myth that hungry people make the best revolutionaries, or workers, or citizens. People who are starving are generally lethargic and you can easily lead hungry people just by putting food before them. Napoleon said that armies march on their stomachs with good reason, starvation makes a man weak, not motivated.

This "liberal vision" is what all men have worked for and toward since civilization was first invented. It's worked fine for every upper class that has ever existed, all that's being suggested is that we extend it to everybody, which our technology now enables us to do.

Its hard to say. Large scale unemployment might be a real problem in the future, or not. What we are seeing is a massive decrease in middle income jobs. Low wage jobs are on the rise and so are high wage jobs, but since higher wage jobs make up so low a portion of all jobs available their increase has a negligible effect on overall employment.

So either some large scale middle income opportunity appears or we have a big problem for the economy. Its hard to see this opportunity coming from a strictly capitalist ideology, but I don't know if having a large part of the population on the dole is a great idea either.
