True but that was before America survived on imports. Of course tarriffs will hurt the poor and middle class more than the rich so it is probably very appealing to Republican politicians.

Exactly....thus is this nothing but distraction and further bluster. This "Border Wall" mantra is absolute BS propaganda to make Trump seem strong and less unpalatable. The southern border has been pretty much a non-issue for years and in fact the effectiveness of eliminating illegal immigration is disrupting American food production. This 1 billion dollar investment is pretty much what was going to be spent regardless of Trump....we just call it something else because of him.

Most illegal immigrants get into the US either by expired visas or directly through the check points that will still exist when the wall is built (it won't get built) - they hide in the thousands of lorries, containers, trains and cars crossing the border daily.

I favor a hedge of Osage and/or Bitter Orange mixed with other thorny things like Rugosa roses. In appropriate places we could just put cactus instead. All of our landscapers would be thrilled.
