The people over there certainly do, and I think the main point for everyone else is that the issue shows up how totally the 'agreement' so far is pure con, which won't stand up ten minutes in real negotiations.
Boris Johnson said it was like Westminster and Camden... I just saw it on the news, people driving willy nilly - It's the UK, if the other side of the EU has a physical border, why not NI? Can't pretend you're not leaving the EU when coming to NI.
I for one don't want to be half in or half out, I want a deal with the EU like I want a deal with other places like the US and Japan. Why can't there be a border?
The government made out that they could have a border that didn't hold anything up. Even Norway, which accepts far more of the EU rules, does hold things up. and what the tories reckon to do is to introduce all sorts of hanging about on what had been a simple 'Westminster-Camden, on a border with hugely more crossing-points than Norway-Sweden. The Unionists (on whom the tories depend) will never wear it. It will put masses of people out of business and hugely affect costs
Because such a border would be shifting Northern Ireland out of the UK, and the majority in the Six Counties don't want to.
What? First of all, Ireland could be UK of GB & Ireland again, like it was, second of all, Northern Ireland is a part of the UK, not Ireland. It's like running back to the EU when the UK is ridding itself of this Brussels lead mess that the Greeks and Germans destroyed. The IRA left the UK, the UK didn't kick out Ireland, so if the UK leaves the EU, then NI and Ireland should get an EU border.
Ireland's just jealous, wants to keep Britain in the EU to pretend it's 1 country over there. EU is not UK, and UK is NI.
I'd sooner see Ireland come back to the UK than give NI up, so they have to respect UK borders which means we're not EU anymore.
It's like, if we push for British borders against the EU, than the EU would have to be the ones to make things easier for the UK EU border. If we say the EU countries win, then there would be no pressure on the EU to ease a mess that isn't there. Make a problem, make a hard border, watch the EU ease things between UK and EU for the sake of NI.
Have you asked the Republic if it wants suddenly to give up sovereignty. It paid enough to get it. I think you're on a hiding to nothing.
That's right, they did, so if they want to bitch about being cut off from the UK, that's their problem. Ireland can't afford a border, not UK/NI, a border in Ireland will devastate the Irish therefore, this is a perfect bargaining chip for the UK to get what it wants from the EU.
Make customs and services easier between UK and EU to save Ireland, but let's not give in and simply give Ireland what it needs without getting anything from the EU in return.
Tell God, not me! You live in a strange world. The Irish are people, you know, with various interests that don't intersect with those of English tories.
You sound like who's on the EU's side. Does it ever occur to you to hold a gun to Ireland/EU's head saying Ireland gets a border unless UK/NI gets to cherry pick?
Users of this forum may recall going on and on about the Westminster/Camden border which separates Denmark Street from the rest of Soho. So it matters to me that London doesn't give the EU anything without getting something for it, even if it means buildings a border in Ireland, I'm with Boris Johnson, there is no border today and this is UK damn it, maybe there should be a land border on the table unless UK gets its way, Ireland is a part of who the UK is negotiating with, and it's called the EU, so since the EU has offered to keep NI inside the EU, it really doesn't want this border, I say, cherry pick from the EU to a point where it either give us what we want or up goes the border.
Who's running the show? And who cares if people don't care? English Tories are people too, maybe you should try and understand, we are people too. It's kind of our right to suggest a border and outline what we want. We're not Irish, we're British.
A border is a problem for the EU, not the UK We have this thorn in the EU's side, that we should not be afraid to push for British interests.
If Southern Ireland wants to continue it's existing border agreement that is agreeable to the UK. If it doesn't. It doesn't. Personally I don't want free movement of people with Southern Ireland. So I'd prefer it to end. Comedy to watch our EU agreement become instantly unagreed. Waste of everyone's time talking to them.
I googled Verhofstadt Brexit and all it says in today's news is, he's going to fight for Northern Ireland to be governed by the EU... https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=v...69i61j35i39.1957j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 Some of these news websites make you pay if you link to view them unless you go through Google. This one doesn't https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/...under-eu-law-brexit-talks-chief-36651861.html
I'm wondering how to sell breaking the Good Friday Agreement to go cherry picking for our future here...
It is said, sometimes you have to risk the good things in life, to get the Great things. How about a Brexit where we cherry pick or we errect a border. No one has ever left the EU before. Why not set a president? A no fuss cherry picking. If the EU falls and everyone heads to the door, make life better in the EU to keep them in.
He doesn't look like much of a fighter. More of a whinger. I think my mum could take him one hand behind her back. The EU is irrelevant now Not our business any more. It's between them and Southern Ireland. When Southern Ireland has decided what it wants to do, we will decide if we need to re-man the borders on our side.
