A teacher who is also a reserve cop accidentally discharged his gun on Tuesday while teaching a public safety class at a high school in California.

A bullet hit the ceiling of Seaside High School in Monterey County, and fragments from the shot struck one male student in the neck. Two others suffered minor injuries as well, according to the Seaside Police Department.

Dennis Alexander, a teacher and a reserve cop from the nearby Sand City Police Department, has been placed on leave at both the school and the department pending an investigation, local outlet KSBW reported. Alexander, also a Seaside city council member, reportedly apologized for the incident.

An investigation into the incident is still ongoing and some students still need to be interviewed, Cmdr. Judy Veloz of the Seaside police told HuffPost.

Alexander’s own department will also investigate the matter, Sand City Police Chief Brian Ferrante confirmed in an email to HuffPost.

“I have concerns about why he was displaying a loaded firearm in a classroom,” Ferrante told KSBW separately. “We will be looking into that.”

Arming teachers is possibly the worst idea I have ever heard of. How many accidents would be acceptable?

This guy supposedly knew what he was doing. Will the lunch lady?

Any idea that results in anything less than gun control is possibly a terrible idea to you.

Teachers should be allowed to be armed if they wish. If they pull out their gun and start waving it around like this guy did should be grounds for immediate termination from his reserve officers job and teaching.

When a shooter starts killing students at a school everyone wants armed cops to rush to the school and take down the shooter. That makes sense to me. But how many students can be shot while the cops are rushing to the school? If a few trained teachers are armed they can instantly take down the shooter. That could save lives. That makes more sense to me. What is the difference whether a trained cop or a trained teacher takes down the shooter? There is no difference. But there is a difference in the response time. That is so critical.

So we let "a few" accidents happen...and "a few" kids get killed ...why?

Let's get the guns out of the hands of madmen...Not into the schools.

What an insane way to think.

What happens when a teacher is cowering in a classroom with a gun and a student trying to escape the shooter tries to get in that class room? Yea...that kid gets killed

What happens when a scared teacher tries to take on the gunman and starts firing wildly in a hallway or a room filled with smoke and blood and screaming people? That's right...more kids get killed and THEN the teacher gets killed

What happens when LE DOES get there and sees an armed teacher? Either they hesitate and get blasted by the gunman (or even possibly the scared teacher) or they shoot the teacher.

ANd that doesn't even address the "accidents" that will happen when every school in the country is filled with guns.

    Incredibly stupid idea

Oh, we playing what if? What if an armed teacher manages to stop an active shooter long before police even show up?

With your out-of-control imagination you should consider writing fictional novels. "What happens . . ." "What happens . . ." "What happens . . ." Better yet what would happen if you put forth a solid workable solution rather than being so critical?

It's possible...but it's far more likely that we'll have more kids killed in "accidents" than in a mass shooting before that ever happens.

Dude...those are far more likely scenarios than your "Dirty Harry" fantasies

    It's called reality

I guess you would decide who the madmen are? Then you would use a gun to disarm them? Dream on.

I would raise the age to buy guns to 21...all guns...

I would make universal background checks so that ALL gun purchases have REAL background checks

I would take away the ability to own or buy a gun from domestic abusers.

I would ban semi-auto weapons or at LEAST semi-auto rifles

There may be other ideas that deal with mental health screenings etc. to prevent freaks like Cruz (were he 21) to own or buy a gun but the above works pretty well

You would of course ...do nothing except put guns in schools.

I was just on the other thread about this and thinking

What security measures are the armed teachers going to be provided with?? Will there be lockable safes for storage within the classroom?? Will they be provided with a holster that would prevent a child accessing the gun when they were distracted? There is some solid research from your Justice Deptarment stating that teens with access to guns are far more likely to be recruited into gangs - would we see an increase in targeting children into gangs if the gangs thought there was access to the teachers gun?

Australia and other countries have dealt with the problem

Haven't made it go away entirely - I mean we actually had a child accidentally killed with a gun the other day

    One child

    And the nation mourned

A teacher keeps his .380 with laser sights in his front pants pocket inside a pocket holster and the students don’t know it’s there. How are gangs going to get his gun? Any teacher who pulls his gun out to show students needs to lose his job.

That’s how I carry to church every week that I don’t wear a coat and tuck my shirt. Nobody has ever found it. I normally carry a 9mm.

why? How often do people accidentally shoot people when they have their guns in concealment?

Are your fears justified or are they irrational?

Almost 4,000 deaths from gun accidents in the five year period from 2005 - 2010

How many dead kids would be acceptable to further your gun loving agenda?

Something about the NRA and people like preventing laws that would make that happen

Is that while the gun is in concealment as it would be on a teacher's person? Or is that all accidents? When do most accidents occur involving guns?

Why would there be dead kids?

it's disjointed dissonance. And it isn't any answer to any of my questions.

If you can't answer them just say you don't know.

    His???

Not all teachers are male and quite frankly as a woman I would not want to accidentally shoot my............ foot

But now you have me intrigued as I did not realise that so many men had that much extra room for something like another gun :p
