If we have been a nation of guns, then does that mean its always been a nation of violence? Mental health and guns are both in the same equation. Both put a person in an illusion of control.

Yep, in none of those places is the government rounding up civilians and massacring them.

All I know is, mass shootings are a fairly new thing. Have we always had gun violence? Yup sure. But mass shootings are a new thing...the question is why? Why is shooting up a school appealing to some kids? Why is shooting up a concert appealing? Why is shooting up a movie theater appealing? These kinds of events weren't even a thought 30 years ago. We had the guns 30 years ago but no mass shootings like we do now. Why?

America is unique mainly in that it enshrines an individual right to firearms. Some other nations have relatively permissive gun policy. The Czech Republic and South Africa for instance. The legality of fully automatic weapons is another anomaly, which is baffling since as far as I can determine, a licensed NFA compliant fully automatic weapon has never been used in a crime.

One area the US is behind several nations on as far as gun rights go is suppressors. Several nations even require their use, noting that they don't silence your shot like in the movies, it is still unmistakably loud, and they are real protection for anyone nearby you shooting.

Even many countries you likely think are completely opposed to firearms, are not. The Nordic countries are a good example, so is Australia. Any Australian citizen can obtain a firearm so long as they pay $200 and wait 28 days.

Oddly enough, handguns are much more often legal than weapons which rarely if never are involved in crime. Handguns are the choice of criminals for obvious reasons: concealability, rate of fire, usability in a confined space.

The issue is not all that it seems. This is mostly caused by shooters in any nation other than the US being a very timid group, preferring to mostly keep to themselves. Quietness is the best chance they have at retaining what gun rights they have left.

    A good start.

    1. Lyndon Johnson's war of poverty causing fathers to leave the home
    2. Psychotropic drugs being dispensed like candy
    3. Judges that catch and release
    4. Governors that do stupid **** like this.
    5. Sheriff's like Israel in Broward county FL that after 39 calls to a killers house did nothing.

Once in a blue moon doesn't constitute 'all the time'. With America, gun violence would appear to be a hobby.

The problem America has, it's citizens see guns as a symbol and not a weapon. So you owning a gun makes you feel you're doing something, taking control. Even Harvard found that more guns = more murders.

    https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/hicrc/

Gun owners are obviously feeling it's a threatening world that they live in.

The people in this country who buy and own guns legally are the most law abiding segment of this society.

Our homicide rate is real. It includes police shootings, justified shootings, and every other category of homicide. The homicide rate in the UK is, at a minimum, twice what is listed.

That is still lower, but the methods used hide the actual murder rate.

This is why the UK has more total violent crime in rapes and robberies for example, with just 1/5th the population of the US.

More guns = more murders only when those guns are in the hands of people with a desire to kill.

7 out of 10 of our states with the highest gun ownership have rates below, half or less than half the national murder rate.

Putting a gun in someone's hands does not make them violent.

Europe is going to get an interesting experience in the coming years. Don't say we didn't warn you.

I would suggest you research the bold part, you might be surprised how a person feels/reacts/perceives whilst armed.

You're confusing the obsession with self-reliance (an American tradition) with the obsession with an object. Guns are simply a greater means to protect oneself in the absence of entirely reliable security: of which very few americans are afforded and which in many americans opinions is not even possibly acheivable.

The reason the "guns per household" is going down is because of the explosion in single "parent" households.

Killing other people is not a right! I don't think you understand what rights are. We have laws against killing!

I don't have to research it, I already know the answer.

People with a CCW commit far less crime, including violent crime, than the general public.

Also, I carry a gun every day, and so does my wife. If anything, it makes you less willing to escalate.

Well, unless you're a violent person already.

No, our "obsession" is part of our freedom. That others gave up their rights to protect themselves means nothing here.

What? That there's a lot more households headed by single women on welfare who vote Democrat?

    Please show me my error.

Show me actual proof guns per household are down because of what you stated. And by proof I want a links from credible sources.

Clearly people with a CCW are less violent.

Go argue with the data if you don't like it.
