When a company buys its competition, effectively becoming a monopoly, eliminating options for the buyers. It's actually the antithesis for capitalism.

Which is why we in America long ago made laws to prevent that.

"United States antitrust law is a collection of federal and state government laws that regulates the conduct and organization of business corporations, generally to promote fair competition for the benefit of consumers. (The concept is called competition law in other English-speaking countries.)

Fine, fine, but with the angle of free trade, that law doesn't mean sht if the company isn't based in the US. It only affects the small fry. Even in the cases it was applied it wasn't successful. Case in point: Microsoft still presides over many monopolies. What about Bayer/Monsanto?

Anyway, the point is that such capitalistic ventures should be framed with laws according to the nation (such was the goal of the AT law you linked). NAFTA was actually a step in the reverse direction, easing trade restrictions rather than imposing more.

How are the companies you list monopolies? Just because you are a huge and successful company doesn't mean you are a monopoly and other countries including your Canada are free to establish competition. Make a better product or the same product at a better price and you win. That's the joy of capitalism.

Maybe it was at a time. Nowadays the product with the best PR campaign will succeed over the better one, the classical case being IBM&Microsoft computers that were quite inferior to contemporary competitors such as Apple's. Yet it isn't Apple which took the market. Same thing for music - it isn't the best stuff you hear, but the one made with the biggest producers, no matter how shtty it is. Nuance. You cling to a capitalism that died somewhere in the 1960s.

That's all opinion not fact. The customer decides what product he likes best and that corporation wins.

    Indeed.

You should start taking vacations in Newfoundland instead of Florida and California. In winter :applause:

With 300% tariffs on US dairy, I'm sure a boycott of those items is more than a little redundant ... Does anyone think Canadian Wal Marts shelves are stocked with goods marked "proudly made in America"? Canadians are thumping their chests while Trudeau is marching them straight into recession. Oh Canada! :roflol:

The interesting thing is these countries that are up in arms and imposing tariffs already have so many that there isn't much left to put tarrifs on except things like food and alcohol. We on the other hand have an extremely target rich environment and can start putting tarrifs on big things that are vital to foreign economies. If they want a trade war they will lose. They have a muzzle loader with three round balls while we have a Thompson submachine gun with a full magazine.

Well, this is confusing. So it is okay that President Trump is protecting the United States' natural and human resources? So why all the whining and complaining from other countries?

First I reported you for a personal attack.

2nd do you have an actual opinion on this topic that rebuttals anything anyone is saying. So far your opinions contribution has been President Trump may well destroy our country ( with nothing to support that), annnd now your opinion is stating people are stupid because they point out we have half a trillion dollars in trade deficits for NO reason and Trump is fixing some of that issue. That's it? just your stupid? . Typical very typical leftist nonsense

That crap don't fly here. Twitter? Sure >> is that way. That's where people go to babble in tongues.

He said it to Trumps face before he left the conference. Trump, being the coward, and liar, he is waited until he was out of earshot to spout off with his bull ****. And his mindless followers just accepted what he said as being true as is prescribed by their lack of intellect.

In reality, the US has higher tariffs on Canada, and contrary to the lies of Trump, the US has a surplus with Canada.

The people who lived in the area now known as Canada participated in that action, that's just a fact.

It makes as much sense as people still bringing up slavery.

Because these countries were engaged in a neo-liberalism movement that was largely a US initiative. Ask any of your 1 percenters what they think about free trade.

Many Canadians support ending dairy and poultry quotas, but the sticking point in the past has been the potential impact on national unity. Quebec benefits most from the dairy quotas and ending support for Canadian dairy farmers could in some minds ignite French separatism.

Trump is going about getting a concession in this area the wrong way. By making a lot of noise about it, he's causing the Canadians to dig in their heels. Now, I don't think Trump cares and is playing to an American audience. We mismanage our own dairy farming by creating surpluses that leave farmers ready to dump product in Canada.

FWIW2U, many Canadians in border communities often slip over the border to pick up eggs, milk, chicken, and gasoline.

And that is in reality what will happen. But let the emotional get this off their chests, for they need it apparently.

I support economic nationalism, for us, for mexico, for canada. For all of us to be independent and not have to depend upon another workforce for our economic model. The only reason we moved away from this, what our founders set up was only because it benefitted a particular group at the top. Made more profits for those people, for it was never in the interest of the american people this moving away from be independent. Only in the interests of the elites. Not a big secret, but may as well be.
