    Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is an Ignoramus

The following video does a good job of proving it:

So the economic "genius" Ocasio-Cortez thinks 200 million people, 40% of the US population, make less than $20,000 a year.....the video points out that she is wrong on the numbers across the board here.

Same for military spending. She claims the military got a $700 billion increase when this is the total budget. She also claimed the military did not ask for more money when we know that is poppycock.

These are just a couple of examples from the video so why are the dems excited about her?

The dems want another obama.....real bad. They want a minority that is physically presentable that can appear well spoken. Or as Crazy Joe Biden said "clean and articulate.

obama was not that bright. When speaking off teleprompter he was painful to watch with all the stammering he did. But put a teleprompter in front of him and he came across totally together.

obama was basically a used car salesman. He sold the American people on "hope and change" while doing the bidding of oligarchs. Dems are salivating to take Ocasio-Cortez and mold her into the same pattern except she will say "like hope and like change"....yuck!

She can probably go far if she plays ball. Otherwise she is just an Ignoramus.

Here is an interesting but more in depth video on "democratic socialism":

She an example of what Progressives call 'educated', because she has the sheep's skin to prove it ;-)

    https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/US/PST045217

According to this, 22% of the population is 18 or under, and 15.6% are over 65, so you can imagine that most of them make under $20k since I don't believe pensions and SS count as income. So you wouldn't need two many adults in between to get to that 40% number.

She has the right combination of factors to go far in the Democratic/Socialist party regardless of being an Ignoramus.

    Gender and Race.

So? She thinks Trump just signed a $700 billion raise to military spending and that Generals didn't ask for it? One, $700b is the current operating costs of the military, there was a slight increase. And two, generals always ask for more money. And three, she thinks $700b would fund her programs that reach into the trillions.

I don't think we need to spend that much to defend the US either. To be the world policeman, yes, defend the US, no. But what does that have to do with our post?

"The dems want another obama.....real bad. They want a minority that is physically presentable that can appear well spoken."

And that's precisely what you are afraid of. All these attacks on her from the Trumpster and talk radio right make that very obvious.

You guys are obsessed with attacking her. You, and you ilk are responsible for 90% of what gets said about this woman here.

We laugh at her for being "educated" and complete stupid. I mean really, "Soccer moms had two vans"? "Unemployment rate is low because everyone has two jobs"? She is neither of those things Obama was supposedly was, I mean Obama was a stammering fool if no one told him what to say. And his "wife" looked more in charge than he did.

Regarding the 40% earn under $20k claim, here are the raw numbers from Social Security in 2015

    https://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/netcomp.cgi?year=2014

    38% earned less than $20k.

But as they say there are lies, damned lies and statistics and unfortunately I do not know enough about how the figures are collated to be able to say whether this number is higher or lower than should be expected.

The data is taken from W-2 documents. I think this means that children, stay at home parents and those who rely solely on retirement income would be excluded from figures altogether rather than being part of the "40% under $20k". I think the figures show that 38% of wage earners earn less than $20k from their employments so:
    • Someone who earned $10k a year from each of three jobs would be classified as earning over $20k
    • Someone who worked half time on a job which would otherwise would have paid $30k would have been classed as earning less than $20k
    • A retiree earning $10k a year to top up their $30k a year pension would have been classified as earning less than $10k
    • A trustifarian whose investments were bringing in $millions a year but who didn't actually have a job would be excluded from the figures altogeher
It seems like a decent first approximation and it does highlight how many people earn comparatively little these days.

There are 206,585,933 working age Americans as of July 2018.

    Average income is $59k/year.

Yeah, I am not buy the whole "40%" number cause the lowest quintile has an upper limit of $22k a year. So the bottom 25% of all earners are making at least $22k/year. Without adding in the unemployed kids and hospice elderly or the summer and seasonal workers, you cant reach 40%.

The average is $59k but the median is much, much lower at around $30k - a relatively small number of very high earners skew the average upwards strongly. The link I posted provides the figures for 2014 and as far as I can tell completely excludes those people who are not in the workforce including

    - children
    - retired people not working
    - those unable to work
    - those who choose not to work

    edited to add:

Link to the latest available (2016) figures:

    https://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/netcomp.cgi?year=2016

36% of people earned under $20k

    Your definitions are off.
"Unlike the median household income which divides all households in two halves, the mean income is the average income earned by American households. In the case of mean income, the income of all households is divided by the number of all households."

    The Median is $50k
The Mean is $69k (I read the graph wrong)
    http://www.mybudget360.com/how-much-do-americans-earn-what-is-the-average-us-income/

151,380,749 wage earners (had earnings in 2011)

50 percent of US wage earners made less than or equal to the median wage, estimate to be $26,965

You're talking about household income which is not the same as individual earnings. Ocasio-Cortez was talking about individuals, not households.

Difference in house hold and individuals. Either way, I still haven't seen where the 40% make less than $20k comes in, but since SS payouts to minors and elderly is a thing, and that might be all they get to report as taxable income, then maybe you can hit that 40% number. Doesn't mean that its anything more than a emotional tug in a debate.

The information comes from W-2 forms rather than tax returns. I'm by no means an expert (I'm not a US worker or tax payer), but I don't think you get a W-2 if you are only in receipt of social security payments.

So 40% (or more accurately in 2016, 36%) of people who received W-2s earned less than $20k from their employment.

    edited to add......

The figures relate to 163.5 million people which means around 200 million are not included because they don't work....
