If there were no Chinese imports, the shelves of American stores would be empty. It is arguable that importers have a more positive effect on the economy because their margins are higher and the selling price of imports is multiples of their ex-factory price.
It certainly was a different world before Chinese took over so much manufacturing. People earned more on average, but prices of consumer goods were also quite a bit higher. Electronics in particular have really come down over the years.
