If the school allows it, then it is their freedom to do so.

Do I agree? Hell no! I find it extremely disrespectful by spoiled brats that have given nothing to the flag or to this country or even to the cause for which they are kneelingt! Everyone has an opinion and their beliefs! That is also part of our freedoms!

The civil war was fought by Americans on both sides fighting for something they believed in and just because the south lost does not mean they are traitors. If they had won then the north would be in the same position, cast as traitors for all eternity. Even today some of you look down your noses at those of us who happened to be born in the south.

Freedom of speech would apply to a regular student attending the university. If the athlete has a scholarship and the university says, stand for the anthem or get suspended, they have the freedom of choice here and that's it.

People think being Kap did it everyone can do it anywhere and at any time. This is not true. When under payment for employment or other purposes, you will adhere to their rules or face the consequences.

I didn't see anywhere in the OP where we were talking about POTUS or Ocasio-Cortez in this thread? I bring the latter to your conversation for obvious reasons!

Can the school say you will publically swear an oath to trump? Can it say you will publically denounce chrustanity?

No. Forced allegiance is not allegiance

Those are arbitrary directives that would not hold up. If the University had a policy written that scholar athletes must stand for the anthem (a known and understood practice of this country for decades upon decades) and understood during the signing, etc; then they must stand. It isn't as simple as the coach just saying you must stand. Freedoms go both ways. I get that.

That is an arbitrary directive. You are free or not.

Are you free to stand in front of your employer and belittle their company and them as a person and keep your job? No. Because there are rules. Written and understood rules.

If you are being paid for something (scholarship) and there was a written rule to stand for the anthem at all sporting events when you accepted that scholarship, you must stand or accept the consequences.

You are free to go into an airport and yell bomb, but there will be consequences to those actions.

It isn't simply free or not!

Do you think your employer can make you stand for the national anthem every morning?

My employer does not have a policy in place that stipulates that so I say no.

Why adopt a measure of capitulation? Is that really what you'd ask of folks? When stressed, or triggered, take a knee? Show you're subjugation? That sounds anemic....

I don't suppose it occurred to you that the fact that these athletes have the type of opportunities today isn't actually the most powerful vindication and repudiation of the kind of inflammatory message you perceive in the gathering of confederate supporters? No? Why not?

I can't believe that in the face of what they might find offensive they can't find it within themselves to offer up some grace? Why not simply rise above and be the example all folks can relate to? Why be so purposefully demonstrably triggered instead? I doubt seriously that folks like the Rev King would support their behavior, nor value their "protest" as valuable.

We can only hope. But that’s just the beginning .... eventually we need Mount Rushmore destroyed, the Washington Monument dismantled, Monticello razed, slaveholders taken off our currency, etc.

It’s time to erase our shameful past and install a new government - dedicated to complete equalization of wealth. We’ll all be identical clones, serving and worshipping government, which is the source of all truth and life.

They disrespected the flag and the nation which has provided them with many opportunities and privileges thanks to the ultimate sacrifice of hundreds of thousands who fought and died so that we could all be free.

Good point. The ultimate measure of "protest" for past societal wrongs is to work hard and succeed. Why do they bow down ?? What are they bowing down to ?? MLK fought for the dream of everyone being treated as individuals and not as group members. These young men are not acting as individuals as MLK dreamed. They are acting as group member lemmings. Their collective "taking a knee" disrespects MLK.
