When an officer shoots and kills an unarmed person without imminent threat of great bodily injury or death to himself or herself, they do a lot more than merely disrespect the flag they stood in front of while taking their Oath. They disrespect and dishonor every decent officer alive in this country (including the three law enforcement officers in my immediate family). They violate their Oath while in uniform and while on duty. They make a mockery of the Criminal Justice System by placing themselves in the role of Judge, Jury and Executioner. They make enemies of surviving family members who will never forget the deeds they have done. That last one I fear will have its Chickens coming home to roost in an nasty episode of revenge killings that could very well take place all across America at some point in the distant future.

Kaepernick, violated no Oath, broke no Law, defiled no flag, embarrassed no fellow peer and cooked up no future Chicken Soup that he needs to fear coming back to haunt him when he least expects it. What he did was honorable, moral, of integrity and necessary. And, it is this former United States Major and Combat Pilot Retired who knows full well that what Kaepernick has done is nothing short of Heroic.

It is impossible for you to offend me.

What is offending is Kaepernick's inability to find employment in the NFL as a direct result of him doing what was Moral. That is offensive. Given everything I've sacrificed for this Country, that is VERY offensive.

Contracts that make null and void Morality are contracts that should never be written. Had I been given an Unlawful or Immoral Order to execute as a Military Officer, I would have indeed failed to execute that Order on the spot. I would have then reported the ranking Officer who issued the order up the proper chain of command. Period. By the book. That's how it is done.

Morality does not take vacation simply because you chose a particular kind of Profession. Though I choose the Profession of a Defender of Freedom, that choice did not revoke my Personal Moral Code.

From the film 'The American President'. In part a speech given by Michael Douglas as President Andrew Shepperd...

For the last couple of months, Senator Rumson has suggested that being president of this country was, to a certain extent, about character, and although I have not been willing to engage in his attacks on me, I've been here three years and three days, and I can tell you without hesitation: Being president of this country is *entirely* about character. For the record: yes, I am a card-carrying member of the ACLU. But the more important question is, why aren't you, Bob? Now, this is an organization whose sole purpose is to defend the Bill of Rights, so it naturally begs the question: Why would a senator, his party's most powerful spokesman and a candidate for President, choose to reject upholding the Constitution? If you can answer that question, folks, then you're smarter than I am, because I didn't understand it until a few hours ago. America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the "land of the free". I've known Bob Rumson for years, and I've been operating under the assumption that the reason Bob devotes so much time and energy to shouting at the rain was that he simply didn't get it. Well, I was wrong. Bob's problem isn't that he doesn't get it. Bob's problem is that he can't sell it! We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them. And whatever your particular problem is, I promise you, Bob Rumson is not the least bit interested in solving it. He is interested in two things and two things only: making you afraid of it and telling you who's to blame for it. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you win elections.

How 'American' can one get. Exercising one's rights under the Constitution. Just like voting. Just like serving jury duty. Just like participating in one's community say as in attending city council meetings and making your voice heard on the issues. Serving in the military. Being American is so much more than just 'flag waving' or mealy mouth reciting/singing of an anthem in song. But some people just don't get it and sadly never will.
