    I wonder if anyone at the school knows that many people say an enthusiastic, "Yes, sir" to anyone if they are happy the answer is yes.
    In the military everyone is supposed to start every sentence to a superior officer with sir, and also end it with sir. Since they are not supposed to argue and usually get simple commands that require no lengthy replies, "Sir, yes, sir" can get to be quite a habit, hard to abandon.
    In other words, there is a strong chance the professor was not thinking about the gender of the person, just following a conditioned response.

    PUSHBACK: New bill to not require education leaders to use students’ preferred pronouns. “A new bill is traveling through Tennessee Legislature Tuesday calling for education leaders not to be required to use a student’s preferred pronoun. Introduced by Senator Mike Bell, SB2777 is a bill that will not legally require teachers or staff to use a student’s preferred pronoun, absolving them of any discriminatory accusations.”
