A lot of Boomers will understand this. They grew up in an era of extraordinary tension, so they've seen it before.

IMO anyone who is overly concerned about 'losing face' over trivial issues (like visiting or not visiting a country) probably do not belong in the political arena. It takes a thicker skin.

    That's a Chinese thing.

Xi is in political trouble, and his bellicosity is intended to distract his people.

Think chess, Biden just moved his queen to the front..

THANK YOU! Even though you and I don't agree about much, perhaps your simple, but eloquently to-the-point explanation of Xi Jinping's new situation can be more easily comprehended by some of the posters in this thread.

When Nancy's plane touched down in Taipei, Xi Jinping officially became "a man without a face"....

    Ech.
IDK why Pelosi needs to go to Taiwan, other than to piss of the CCP.
IDK why the CCP would be pissed off about Pelosi going to Taiwan.

We've been sending weapons to Taiwan for decades, and as a result its the most heavily defended small Island nation in the world. China would still eventually overwhelm it by attrition in an invasion, but it would prolly he a pyrric victory. Seems to me any 'symbolic' offense intended by us and/or percieved by the CCP should be meaningless in comparison to that. But I guess everyone wants to get their britches in a twist over political elites making photo ops. W/e.

The main reason anyone gets excited about Taiwan is because that's where TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.) is... and, "TSMC produces more than 90% of the world’s advanced semiconductors.
If you need a super tiny computer chip to power your missile defense system, quantum computer or artificial intelligence research, you’re going to get it from Taiwan — even if you’re China or the United States.

Well ya, thats an important strategic resource, but if China really wanted to, they could build a semiconductor factory on the mainland. China's interest in Taiwan is political sovereignty and dominance. China views Taiwan the same as we viewed the Confederacy- 'how dare you want to be a different nation!'

But none of that helps me understand the value the political elites place on in-person visits. Its just tiresome, petty intrigue on both sides, to me.

Too funny! This is exactly the kind of laughable, theatrical gesture that a tinpot dictator, like North Korea's Kim Jong-un, for instance, pulls with trying to play the intimidation 'card' -- by shooting missiles into the sea!

Now China's mighty Xi Jinping is reducing himself to the same level of a hilariously carnival-like schauspiel...?! As of today, August 2nd, 2022, we see that China's new "man who has lost face" is also a "man without a plan".... 8)

upload_2022-8-2_10-28-26.jpeg . The reality of the 'frightening, dreadful Chinese Dragon'...?!

It seem media sensationlize the issue. China official response was military action. That could meant live fire drill or fly over Taiwan. in the coming weeks they likely do more intensive military exercise near Taiwan. I don't think china ever say they gonna shoot down Nancy plane that's all credit to online rumors which media further sensationlize for more click bait

    **** the CCP.

The principle is: Put your ass where your money is.

The fact she was willing to fly in and fade the heat personally, potentially setting herself up for an assassination attempt or killer PR, tends to drive home the message that she's serious about her overtures.
It makes a big splash because its a needless symbolic gesture that "big people" don't really HAVE to do so them going through the motion is supposed to make it more important.

    Oh dear.

He was right, your views are emotions and prejudices all rolled up into one big, silly outburst. Pelosi wasn't scared off. What she PROVED is that she & the Biden Administration are prepared to stand up to Chinese threats.

Oh, and you were the one who also predicted China was going to invade Taiwan this year, again because Biden did what Trump had agreed to do & withdrew from Afghanistan. Lets see how that emotional outburst looks in 5 months.

Keep it up, I enjoy a good laugh.

Nancy Pelosi turns out to have already provoked the Chinese 31 years ago by unsanctioned laying flowers and unfurling slogans in Tiananmen Square.
