I'm just curious. I hear lots of stories like " I broke my arm in canada and got a bill for 35 bucks".
Its a crap shoot for me. I just picked up antibiotics for $3.25 but also just paid $800.00 for a dental thing.
I don't think USA has the best healthcare but I haven't researched much. What country do you think has the best healthcare system and why?

I work in healthcare in the USA. I think it's amongst the best in the world but not affordable for all Americans. It varies according to state and district as well.

If by best you mean the least amount out of pocket and most efficient public systems probably Scandinavian countries.

Australia has the best of both worlds. We have a two tier public and private system that works reasonably well together. People have died waiting for ambulances and emergency care though.

    'Best' requires further explanation.

In the absence of this, the 'best' healthcare system is that which allows the citizens of the country to live longer lives and which has the lowest rate of infant mortality. I do not know if there is a country for which both of these criteria are true.

    Regards, stay safe 'n well.

I recall people from Canada and England coming here for heart surgeries.

    Good point.

Also, there is the issue of how successfully each country is at delivering healthcare to its people.

That's an area where the USA tends to suck, as our system is for profit and not everyone has the resources to pay.

We do have programs for those left behind, so one has to figure this out. Also, this is an area where Republicans want to cut people from healthcare support.

I had triple bypass surgery ten years ago. Feeling great today. US healthcare helped my wife beat cancer. She feels great today too. American healthcare is the BEST!

You’re a good guy and I hate to upstage you, I had an emergency quad bypass in June of 2001. Did they go through your chest or through your ribs? Mine was through the chest. @ButterBalls also has experience in this area.

I’m glad you and your wife are doing ok. good luck and health to the both of you.

As I understand it, they cracked my sternum to gain access. But I slept through the whole deal and never really knew what they did. I can remember hugging a huge pillow to my chest for a couple weeks as I drifted in and out of consciousness. I learned that complainers and whiners didn't do well getting pain drugs but if you were pleasant you got all you wanted. I tried to be happy and as a result, I don't remember much. Interesting time. No stitches... just some sort of medical superglue. I was in my room talking with a nurse at one point when about a dozen medical folks ran in. Apparently my heart had stopped. I vaguely remember being back in the operating room. I woke up with a pacemaker. That's one reason I don't worry about nuclear war. It won't be horrible for me at all. EMP ill fry my pacemaker and I'll go quickly, if it ever happens.

I pay $50/month. That gets me as many doctors visits as I want. And if they do me dirty, I can stop paying and find something else ...or find nothing else, and hope for the best. The 'I can stop paying' part is key here. There's no other developed nations where you can opt out if they screw you.

Unless you look at life expectancy, childhood mortality, accessibility or cost compared to other nations.

Do Americans frequently classify something as best while almost not comparing it to anything else except what they have experienced?

I broke my ankle six weeks ago and needed screws in it.

Of course being in my early 40s and my job not offering health insurance I can't afford any. I looked at the bronze Obamacare plan about 3 and 1/2 years ago and at the time I didn't have any income and they wanted a premium of $495 a month with a $10,000 deductible for what amounted to only catastrophic coverage. ( And if Obama would have had his way, anyone not signed up would have had their taxes raped so that they could turn around and provide free healthcare to illegals.... Thank God the court told him to go stuff that)

So for my surgery they wanted $28,000 out of pocket. I was able to apply for assistance with the hospital and I ended up paying roughly $3,000 out of pocket.

From 28,000 to 3,000 so I'm not terribly mad but I am going to check into health insurance again and see if the insane rates have come down any.

I cannot afford to basically pay my rent for health insurance

People make some bad decisions. I joined the Army, went to college with their help, became an engineer, ended up working for a large aerospace company. When I had a $500,000 bill for triple bypass heart surgery, my employer paid it all. My health insurance was part of my compensation, like my salary.

I didn't trip over a banana peel and land in that situation... I planned, studied, and worked hard. No one paid my way. I EARNED my own way.

That's good for you. At least I paid for some of it and didn't expect it for free like so many liberals think people should get it for.

Heart Attack. Wife drove husband to the hospital. Dropped him off. Went to find parking. Parked car. Hurried into Hospital. Heart surgery was already done. Population of city where hospital was located - 100,000.

I don't know of anywhere else in the world this happens but the U.S.

There is also a huge disparity between rural/remote and metro even though there are “workarounds”

The low life expectancy has nothing to do with U.S. medical system. Just listen to the leftists here.

Like half of all teenagers are slaughtered by guns. And then there are all those people who die from all the pollution in the U.S. Because the U.S. is like the worst when it one to the environment. Everyone then dies from that because like global warming. It's real you know - don't be a denier.

So, the U.S. would have a life expectancy of 150 if it weren't for that awful stuff. Just ban guns n' gasoline n' stuff.

I can go into a public hospital here let us say in Boulia and I would be flown free to the closest facility capable of delivering the care i required

Malaria is one of those vaccines that big Pharma was not interested in developing because it is a third world country disease and they do not see return on investment

I've heard France has the best healthcare, but I don't know the metrics on that, other than knowing that it apparently has a fairly good hospital bed per 100,000 ratio. That's an important metric, but not the only one. My personal experiences with US healthcare have been quite good. My personal experiences with US military healthcare have been...less than optimal.

Wealthy people come to the US for specialized treatment and surgeries. There is no question that we offer outstanding healthcare - world class even. But if it is not affordable to ordinary citizens then it is nothing of which to be proud. The medical side of the healthcare system is run like a business and doctors can make a fortune here. But that isn't something upon which the quality of the healthcare should be measured.

To extend a bit on my earlier post, a question of what is 'best' can, and in all probability will, end in inconclusive chatter unless standards are agreed upon. These should be factual, measurable, and tied to the subject through a causal link. Anecdotal information must be discarded.

It's worth noting the topic line, "What country do you think has the best health care?" Contrast this with "What country has the best health care?" The first invites only an exchange of opinions. The second seeks resolution -- an answer.

    Regards, stay safe 'n well.
