Governments’ use of the pandemic to claim sweeping new emergency powers has had destructive effects.

Long before Covid struck, economists detected a deadly pattern in the impact of natural disasters: if the executive branch of government used the emergency to claim sweeping new powers over the citizenry, more people died than would have if government powers had remained constrained. It’s now clear that the Covid pandemic is the deadliest confirmation yet of that pattern.

Governments around the world seized unprecedented powers during the pandemic. The result was an unprecedented disaster, as recently demonstrated by two exhaustive analyses of the lockdowns’ impact in the United States and Europe. Both reports conclude that the lockdowns made little or no difference in the Covid death toll. But the lockdowns did lead to deaths from other causes during the pandemic, particularly among young and middle-aged people, and those fatalities will continue to mount in the future.

“Most likely lockdowns represent the biggest policy mistake in modern times,” says Lars Jonung of Lund University in Sweden, a coauthor of one of the new reports…
…Predictably, the officials responsible for the damage are ignoring these consequences and seeking even more power in the future…

..If we’ve learned anything from the pandemic and earlier disasters, we ought to be doing precisely the opposite by enacting new limits on government power during emergencies. Americans need what Swedes have enjoyed: legal protection against autocrats posing as saviors.

This is so right on! We the people need to let our autocratic would be saviors know that next time we will be on to them. That we know that their actions actually caused more harm. That the states and places that did not lock down or re opened by May 2020 had far better educational and academic responses and the casualty rate was no real difference.

To those in the control of current federal regime and in blue states and cities we know what happened last time and if you people have sadistic dreams of harder crackdowns next time, know this, we know better what and how and when to resist and not follow your commands. Attempts at more control and power next time will be matched with an even greater willingness to resist.

Indeed. The sad thing here is that they have learned nothing and intend to double down on the control they went for last time. They don’t allow for the fact that we the people intend to also double down on past resistance to said control. We will never let them do that to us again!

you act as if this was the very first plague mankind has encountered, and that the reasonable response of some state gopverbvnebts is a new idea.

sars And ebola, that we know of, were stopped by obama at the border, amid a constant twitter storm from the orange anointed one.

after at least a million deaths WE real americans managed to get this pandemic under control with NO HELP from the anarchial suicide squad that calls themselves "conservatives, really antisocial radicals intent on delivering our nation to foreign dictators.

Hard to fathom given the low view of conservatives(of course, the same can be said for how conservatives view liberals.). But I've always been for, and I call for a one-party state. The obvious dilemma is who that one party should be. It should neither be Democrats or Republicans, who don't care for the country but care for their own political power.

The leaders of government,, must be willing to constrain the government and allow the government to co-exist with its people. To me, a nationalist government, a government for and by its people is a government the establishment most fears, and a government that the people will come to love, if we overcome the media bias.

Government at present, serves big pharma, big tech, big corporation. They are beholden to lobbyists and special interests, who enable their employment. So the first step is a universal banning on outside money in politics. As well as reducing the cost of elections by up to 95%, so that even the little guy can run for office.

By doing away with the corrosive elements in our system, we can have a fairer representation. And the idea of multiple parties representing multiple views, is optimistic at best and at worst, our current political system doesn't even allow it. We're not like the UK and Israel.

until the civil rights act we a had a 1 party state in louisiana . we still do, but of course the 1 party has changed.

democrats have enough factions to simulate a multi party democracy. the republicans are much more organized and have not used their power to do anything productive.

I don’t hope for that! I have no desire to live through that. I want to live at least as long as he does too!
