As you said above the Romans converted. As religion in the times of feudal land owners later was oftentimes very simple. You were just of the religion of your feudal lord. It was rather the rulers picking up and preferring a monotheistic religion over a polytheistic religion as the better instrument to rule the masses and/or to justify war/aggression to the outside.

There was no connection to the content of the Bible nor were these fights anywhere near the bloodshed Islam brought over Europe or the rest of the world. As said above, I can only repeat myself, there are, there have always been and there will always be conflicts along religous lines for certain territories, political priviledges/non-priviledges, for power, for money, whatsoever. As soon as they come to terms and the conflict is resolved, there are times of peace. Neither Hindus, nor Jews, nor Irish Catholics go on a killing spree in the UK anymore, although they kicked them out of their countries and came to terms with them.

These terms can never be reached with Islam. A Hindu nationalist in India is as dangerous for US citizens in Boston as a candy bar, as vice versa an American nationalist fanatic from Boston is as dangerous for the average Indian citizen from Chennai as a pack of chewing gums.

On the other hand a Muslim fanatic in Saudi-Arabia can be a deadly threat to US Americans as you saw in 9/11 and vice versa, an American convert to Islam can be a deadly threat to Yezides or Christians in the Middle East as we learned from 2012-2014. Because many came to their countries made videos which are fun for them, where they burn people alive, dissolve them in acid, hack them into pieces, rape little girls, enslaving their women in order to decimate infidels (yes, I know they define many people we would define as Muslims as infidels themselves) and spread the Islamic population. The fact that a German middle class kiddie converting to Hinduism is irrelevant for other human beings in the world, while a German middle class kiddie converting to Islam is a potential threat is no matter of opinion, of hysteria or attituide, its based on real historic events.
