Are they like California in not doing prescribed Burns and then acting surprised when they have wildfires due to an abundance of fuel?

If so... Climate change has nothing to do with it but poor Land Management is to blame.

So….I guess it was also “poor land management” causing the extreme heat and destructive fires in China, Italy, Spain, Greece, etc….?

There's an on-going effort to 'weaponize' certain words and phrases as pejoratives. 'Climate change' is one of them. That some areas of the world are experiencing long periods of dryness or heat or unusual levels of rainfall is a given. It's backed by many years of daily records of the weather. Climate scientists try to winkle out an understanding of what is going on with the earth's weather, with specific areas of a given climate, and with overall warming and/or cooling. Apologist politicians cherry pick here and there in an attempt to discredit 'them' -- the other party.

Meanwhile, the glaciers keep melting away, the sea level continues to slowly rise, and the temperature of the lowest level of the atmosphere and the earth's surface continues to rise.

    And so it goes . . .

    Regards, stay safe 'n well.

We got indeed them records, and they show that the frequency and intensity is increasing.
Example: July 2023 was the worlds hottest month ever recorded

Some people always need someone to blame, even for natural disasters.

Maui was under very dry conditions for a long time, and then got 60mph winds from Hurricane Dora so with those two things put together all you need is a spark and a massive fire will happen.

It’s mostly poor land management. Sugar cane growers pulled out of Maui a few years ago. The fields have been unmanaged since, and have become overgrown with non-native grass species. This is the main fuel for these large fires.

You will find passing reference to this fact in some news stories. My brother lives about 25 miles from Lahaina and has been worried about something like this since the sugarcane plantations went feral.

And the real question is who or what is causing rising water temperatures, increased air temperatures and droughts? Why are so many quick to condemn humans for these changes?

But aren't you and many other's quick to blame humans for these tragedies?

    Hi, flyboy56.

You are speaking of politicians and those in the red and blue camps, not the scientists. I cannot speak for politicians. I am not one. I am, though, a retired scientist.

Science works as a means of approaching truth because scientists accept as a working hypothesis that the best available causal explanation for a phenomenon is the one to work with until a better one comes along.

    Regards, stay safe 'n well.

Is there a Godwin's law for pulling Trump into it?

Trump has nothing to do with this devastating incident, but why let a good crisis go to waste.

I believe 557's statement holds validity.

I’m large part yes. Take Greece for instance. Humans started deforestation in Greece centuries ago, turning it from primarily productive mature forest to the more barren landscape we see today. With the loss of large percentages of forests comes decreased and less regular precipitation. Also more extreme heat. Science tells us extreme temps in places like Greece would be at least 0.5°C lower if the trees hadn’t been removed.

Most of the worst AGW and other problems like fires have very little to do with CO2. It’s mostly other human actions like deforestation, desertification, etc.

What you are reading from journalists isn’t based on science most of the time. It’s unfortunate.

I rarely draw Trump into threads but his suggestion a few years back about how California should just rake the forests to prevent wildfires stood out so I had to interject … please carry on …

A simple way of observing this is a cold winter's night where it is noticeably warmer in the city where all of the paved over areas are but when you go out in the country it's noticeably colder

I'm not the one ignoring things like 557 pointed out about the abandoned sugarcane Fields providing plenty of fuel.

I'm also not the one reading an article that's been sensationalized by journalists thinly masquerading behind the appearance of some sort of weather experts.

    Stay thirsty my friend

Yep. Science. Temperature effects not tied to atmospheric CO2 are a big deal.

Yeah, it's called Do*chebags Law... because that do*chebag is a useful parallel for almost any bad story (except this one)

So sad, we stayed just north of Lahaina during the rainy season this year (January and February) and it rained half the time we were there, it's now the dry season, they were experiencing a moderate drought coupled with the high winds and apparently a popular flammable invasive type of grass.

btw, Lahaina in Hawaiian means cruel sun, describing the sunny dry climate. (The average rainfall for June is 0.08 inches, July is 0.14 and August 0.28 )

Isn't it funny how The sensational article ignored those pertinent facts?

But what do you expect from an article from the guardian masquerading to be some sort of legitimate climate news?
