I just wanted to share this songbird's voice with you all; she really made an impression on me-- I was about to choose, for that last word, "connection," because I was really vibing w/ her voice. Just incredible fluidity of tone, paired with such a refined, personal style, which somehow also sounds utterly classic. A West Virginia Siren, her voice oscillating in its intimate signature, with such a smooth & sultry warble. But if you really listen to the undulant crescents she croons, underneath it are spread the jagged fracturings of spirit, from whatever rough cards, fate had faithlessly dealt her, that have wrought the person, who sings for us, today.

@lemmiwinx , I thought you might like to check out some of the Bluegrass sounds, among others, I just heard from this really stylin' singer, Sierra Ferrell. The first song, has an interesting mix of an Appalachian flavored Bluegrass refrain, with what reminds me of Tex-Mex Country & Western verses. The second song has a cool Latin retro sound, which I think is called Gypsy Jazz. But don't miss the post right before this one, with two other good songs. Her voice is both mellifluous, and yet granular-- I'm now picturing the particulate twistings, and diaphanously articulated enticings, of a cheery dust devil.

Compare the sound of Sierra Ferrell's "Far Away Across the Sea," from the last post, to this oldy: Terry Stafford's "Suspicion."

    And of course, Elvis's cover

Here's another Sierra Ferrell song, for which she's giving a solo version-- "Silver Dollar"

And here Sierra, the band (and the audience) groove to a cover of "Don't Let Me Down"

Correction-- I'd meant to point you'all, in the last post, from the song "Suspicion," to the first song, in the post beforehand, "In Dreams."

Here's another cover of "Years," for your trouble:

Though there are a wide range of influences in her styles, I'm getting the idea that, at the heart of it, is real old school country music.

    One more time:

hell of a collection of talent on show...

it depends upon the mood....the quantity and indeed the quality of the scotch.....but (this evening) this is the best track every created by Pink Floyd

why oh why did Waters have to get so self indulgent and so self absorbed....the Final Cut was just some sad and maudlin adjunct to The Wall and for me the final straw....we parted company after that....but Gilmour...jeezuz.... the man's a genius

And finally a Welsh classic....well....sort of....short but oh my.....ever so sweet

....this track is proof that perfection does exist....

That's an interesting note, I hadn't known-- that Bron-Yr-Aur, is based on a Welsh folk tune(?) Can you provide us any enlightenment, on its title? Its a nice, relaxing tune, but a little redundant, for my taste. My favorite rock, acoustic instrumental, is probably Airplane's "Embryonic Journey," (which, I realize, only uses a few chords, but Jorma Kokkonen somehow imbues it with a complete character, and distinctive spirit, through his stylistic subtleties). But that one is a favorite of others, as well, and so has been posted in other iterations of this thread. Therefore, I will return an altered echo, of your tune, with this, likewise brief, "Petite Etude," by Triumph.

What's your pleasure, when it comes to scotch? I definitely prefer the Highland malts, myself (e.g., Glenmorangie; previously Cragganmore), to which I add just a wee bit of water, but I've been really impressed with the Islay malt, Lagavulin, in the past, as well, though I preferred that one straight. This was quite some time ago, however (and, in fact, in between, I once ordered it in a bar, but have my doubts as to whether they'd been serving the genuine article). The thing is, I had noticed with the Cragganmore, that once scotches became the "in" thing, and that brand became really popular, the quality went downhill. I wonder if the same has happened to Lagavulin. I hope I won't seem sacrilegious, if I admit that I've starting trying Irish single malts. I'm interested in any of your perceptions, or suggestions.

My Pink Floyd phase ended, long ago. Most of their stuff now seems to drag for me, goes too slow, without enough contrast, variation, introduction of new material, and development. I still like "Wish You We're Here," but that song has, no doubt, also been posted throughout the previous "What are you listening to right now?" threads, so I'll go with something else.

I remember really digging the "Animals" album, when I'd first heard it. I just now relistened to "Pigs," which grooves, but which I now get tired of, at about halfway through (it is an eleven minute song). So, instead, for anyone unfamiliar with it, here is "Sheep." Other than my dissatisfaction with its coda, which kind of just trails off, for me, this song contains some sweetness, but also jams, a bit-- so, you might say, just like its animal namesake.

Interesting that so many who like Floyd, or say Steely Dan, have negative views of Jazz, when this work is firmly rooted in that form.

Two fine Australian performers who wisely left behind their sunless homes for the endless sunny expanses of Australia. ;)

Jimmy actually had a brief stint as lead singer of the band Fraternity, which had previously been fronted by Bon Scott. It was during an unsuccessful tour of the UK with that band that Bon met a burly Geordie singer who he thought would do a great job if he ever left AC/DC. Turned out he was right.

    Hippie Bon:

I got to see this performed live on TV today in front of 100,000 people. It was Grand Final day, which means they trot out Mike Brady to sing the song. More cheese than France, but great fun if you are at the game.

The Club was a great fun film. Most of the footballers were actual footballers from the team the play was based on - Collingwood (they actually won today. :( ). Legendary coach Tom Hafey was also in the film. Its a brilliant time capsule for those of us who remember VFL footy in the 70s. :)

I've been listening to Elvis Costello's Punch the Clock. Still sounds great almost 40 years later.

Also had a couple of clever digs at the government of the day. This one was originally recorded by poet & musician Robert Wyatt. The trumpet on the Elvis Costello version is played by Chet Baker....yes, that Chet Baker!

When the pandemic hit in 2020 musicians all over the world suddenly had nowhere to perform. The Harlem-based Emmet Cohen Trio decided to create a weekly 21st century 'rent party' in Cohen's apartment to raise money and spirits. Initially focussed on local musicians, Live From Emmet's Place has become a magnet for emerging and established jazz talent from everywhere. With over 120 episodes it is a treasure trove of contemporary jazz talent. Well worth a watch if you love live jazz.

Here's a pop song with a light jazz feel, that's mostly about the sensual voice. It is a nice, mellow groove. If you can listen to this & not be swaying by the middle, you need to take a little toke & chill out, my brother (or sister).

    Say What You Want-- Texas

I hope you didn't miss out on all that cool vocal counterpoint, at the end.

This other is pretty smooth, but it's the video addition, that really makes it.

I want to leave you all one more, I just came across. This is a folk-flavored, lovely, & soulful cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," by Eva Cassidy. There is a crystalline purity in her voice, as Cassidy dresses her own spirit, in this hand-me-down song.
