There have been 22 government shutdowns in American history and they all have occurred since 1976. Will this be the 23rd time or will some sort of last-minute deal be achieved in the congress? What is a long-term plan here?

There is no long term plan. Starting in the 60s Congress subconsciously reached a deal that actually legislating is too politically fraught (ie- if you vote for or against something it's publicly noted and easy to track down) so they consciously appointed administrative agencies to take the heat while they simply funded the agencies.

In shirking the Constitutional purpose of legislating, all they are left with is the ability to spend money. And they do that with no limits.

On the other hand, these claims of disaster if the government is shutdown are bogus. The wife and I have both worked for the government and survived probably 6 or 7 shutdowns. Always big news in DC and virtually unrecognizable outside of DC.

    I wouldn't worry about it.

As Smedley Butler USMC noted a century ago, and I figured out in Vietnam, troops don't protect the nation, they do the bidding of the military industrial complex. Eisenhower's warning has come true with a vengeance.

If the troops were protecting our southern border, the OP might have a point, but they're not. The Pentagon is embracing the Woke Agenda, so it's more screwed up now than it was 20 years ago.

    Wait there's more!
As a subcontractor on some federally funded low income housing, we laughed about it until our progress payments stopped. So we had bills for $50K in materials to pay and no job to install it on. Sooo... we laid off our Mexicans... :fight:

You can read his book, most likely available online and it is not long.

Which one of them? He has written several. Do you know what he has warned us about? Why don't you just tell?

I'm still wondering what Eisenhower warned us about. I hope Eleuthera will answer.

    All of them.

There are very few line items in the budget. Most of the time, the budget for an agency is approved for a certain amount and with a few stipulations. The agency then gets to do whatever it wants with the money.

I remember a TV show from the 00's where the premise was America instead of doing war on terror abroad had a defensive line on the southern border.
This was supposed to make the admin seem dangerous and unhinged.
Pretty ****ing weird concept because even then I was like why is protecting your own border bad exactly?

The American 'left' is a party of the stupid for the stupid.

The reason they win elections is because they all accept each other's stupid ideas,
they are the party of 'toleration'.

Are they even on the actual left?
I don't think so, just look at all they've done for Ukraine - the poorest country in Europe.

All Biden has to do is close the border and the MAGA holdouts will sign the bill.

Congress will probably pass a stop-gap bill to keep soldiers paid if there is going to be a shutdown.

With Government Shutdown, Troops Still Protect Nation, But Possibly Without Pay.

The military at least is the easiest place to work without pay. Most everything necessary is provided. Food, shelter, medical etc. They may have some bills to pay but they can wait if there is an actual shutdown. When I was stationed in Korea in the Army I spent almost nothing and Korea was 15 of the 20 months I had to serve as a conscript with a 3 month early out.. I had a decent nest egg when I left.

It ran one season when I was like IDK 10-14.
I forget the name. Drama about political nepo babies and other high circle 20 somethings.
Like Mel-Rose place with a political backdrop. Early 00's I think. Can't for the life of me remember its name.
