I have completely disagreed with Biden on one thing he has done when it comes to foreign relations in his term so far. Just one…. This is not it. The constitution says we need congress to declare war. It doesn’t say we need congress to declare defense of commerce. It doesn’t say we need congress to defend against attacks on us or free trade. These democrats are spewing the same ol garbage on why I hate the democrat parties logic on foreign affairs.

Allowing trade to be targeted is moronic and will cause inflation. They are targeting trade ships for a reason. It’s not to make a bed of roses for us. It will hurt our wallets and abilities to purchase goods if they were allowed. To not do what Biden is doing would be a self inflicted wound of cowardice. I will defend him on this even though I do not like him and thank god he’s got the balls to do what’s needed cause apparently the rest of the DNC are too chicken to stand up for our interests.

I would also like to extend a tip of the hat to the Republicans who defended him on his actions. I would also like to publicly extend a middle finger to the squad. If women like them controlled the US we would be terrorist sympathizing pansies. I’m glad Biden isn’t caving to their garbage politics.

Defending the ships by retaliating is one thing but taking it to the next step and targeting Yemen is another. The first is defense and the second is a declaration of war.

The second was not a declaration of war. They target only areas that have actively been linked to attacking trade. This was a defensive move.

First, I'm not sure how you decided on "the one thing" Biden did wrong. There are so many disasters. As for the most egregious, personally, I'm torn between: (1) the treachery of allowing over 10M people to stroll across the border (btw that border is going to be sealed up tightly within 24 hours after we inevitably get hit with terrorist attacks by our enemies' proxies, and everyone knows Joe just let them walk in), (2) the dishonor of placing our troops under the security umbrella of the Taliban at the end of the Afghanistan withdrawal, and simply abandoning American citizens and many of our Afghan and other allies there, and (3) the lack of humanity of so obviously instigating a war that got 500k people dead so far when he must have known it wasn't winnable from the start. How did you pick?

Second, there was a period of a year or two, back when Obama decided to tuck tail and run from Iraq so that he could use it in his 2012 reelection campaign, in which I argued against many posters on this site about the risk of leaving Iraq like that. The gist of all my posts were that you don't just get to unilaterally decide a war is over. The other side has a say. And they aren't done. I said we would see the worst terrorist army ever emerge (and they did, and called themselves ISIS)(I believe ISIS's first attack was Benghazi on Sep 11, which Obama and Clinton had to say was a "spontaneous mob" in order to conceal their incompetence). I said Iran would gain most of the influence in Baghdad, and that one of their prime aims is put themselves in the position, with their proxies, to harrass our shipping. Now we got it.

Third, Congressional members should be furious at Biden for ignoring the process (I expect nothing less from his fascist administration who obviously don't really care about American principles). I believe the commander-in-chief must have the authority to wield the armed forces instantly, in our defense, in any number of situations that may develop in the world, without waiting for Congress to convene and debate it. But everyone has seen this coming for a couple of months now. Biden had plenty of time to make a case for war to Congress and the American people in response to whatever is threatening us in this situation. I think the administration decided to say screw the complications of explaining to Americans what is going on, and make an argument for using our armed forces, and just wait until we must respond. Again, because I don't think they care for, or respect our system.

I agree that Biden made the right choice. Congressional Democrats can't be trusted to do the right thing. But I did see a New York Times headline that the wider war we were hoping to avoid has just expanded after the Yemen strikes. In its aftermath.

The Regional War No One Wanted Is Here. How Wide Will It Get? (The New York Times, Jan. 12, 2024)

I agree with points 1 and 2. Not point 3. What war was avoidable? And how?

This is a defensive move, not a wide war. They are attacking western ships and it must be retaliated for.

Were they US ships? NOPE. Bombing a sovereign country is an act of war. Allowing this kind of bullshit is what leads to dictatorships.....or getting your ass nuked. For once in a blue moon, those democrats are right.

One day, when a president acts like this they are gonna FAFO.

No, international commerce should be protected. They aren’t doing this to help the west. They also have targeted US ships but the drones were shot down. It is a defensive move and no country should be allowed to attack international commerce in international waters with complete impunity. That’s a moronic suggestion that will only hurt pockets of millions

I mostly agree with you. I do think it would have been in the spirit of the Constitution if the President had at least notified the Republican and Democratic leadership in the House and Senate of his intentions and gained their approval. I realize that we are not declaring war on Yemen, but bombing another country is an act of war. Our Founders intended for the Congress, our elected representatives, to be choosing between war and peace with other countries, not the President by himself.

It’s not an act of war when they’re attacking international trade and trying to target our ships as well.

It was a targeted, bilateral retaliation. I don't see the big deal.

No point discussing things with terrorists. They know to expect if they do it again.

Still an act of war. That "they’re attacking international trade and trying to target our ships" simply makes it a justifiable act of war.
And do you realize that Biden can seek congressional approval AND then let the bombs fly in Yemen? Or are you arguing that even if the Congress opposed the military action, the President is still free to attack anyway?

One of Bidens first actions as President was to remove the Houthis from US sanctions and "terrorists" group lists.

I think the Houthis and Iranians attacking shipping and our ships are acts of war. Retaliating as we did is also an act of war. Not a "declared" war, but acts of war. And, therefore, I think it would be in the spirit and intent of the Constitution that at least our congressional leaders should have the opportunity to weigh in on the decision making.

The US could do as it pleases against the Houthis in Yemen. None of it will change the real dynamics, except create longer terms problems for short term political posturing benefits for Biden.

The real issue in this macabre game of chicken is how to make sure Israel is stopped from continuing its crimes in Gaza? Iran has both an interest as well as a clear responsibility to come up with an answer to that question. So far, it hasn't been able to and, every day it fails, more kids die in Gaza and more power accrues to real fascists who are a threat ultimately to all humanity. Even to their own societies. Even to their own fellow fascists, since the dynamics of unbridled power competition in the age of AI, nukes, and more, without any rules or real interest beyond the self, ultimately leads to a sort of cannibalism.

Biden doesn't have to get permission since a declaration of war was instituted in 2002, a war on terror and terrorists...Authorization for Use of Military Force. 50 USC 1541

Yeah yeah yeah but the Houthis were taken off the terrorist list. The statute ^^^^ requires Congressional authority. BTW, this is the country of Yemen, not the country of Houthi.

I don't want to hear jackshit about 'international commerce'. None of those cargo ships were US ships. Let the ship's country handle any issue it may have. All you and everyone else knows is what the fake news has told you.

Just WTF is the US Coast Guard doing in that part of the world? Are we guarding the coast of Yemen? israel? The Coast Guard needs to have its ass guarding OUR coast.

It's long past time to let israel sink or swim on its own. The US needs to get the **** out of that part of the world because the only thing we do is make **** worse. Like starting wars without Constitutional authority.

What do you think of that decision? Do you think that the Houthis are terrorists? Do you think that they should be allowed to continue to strike international commerce in international waters?
